During the late aughts, one particularly captivating series stood out, and it wasn’t just due to the Stefan, Damon, and Elena love triangle. Although that aspect was the show’s most alluring feature, viewers held the intricate world-building of The Vampire Diaries in high regard. The mythology and legends presented in the series were rich and thoughtfully crafted, but some inconsistencies left fans puzzled throughout the eight seasons.
In the world of TVD , certain aspects like the enigmatic doppelgänger phenomenon or the unique abilities of vampires occasionally left spectators puzzled. As the episodes progressed, the writers tended to bend the rules or provide unclear information from the start, leading to varying outcomes for characters and resulting in some plot loopholes and inconsistencies. To this day, these discrepancies have left fans pondering potential explanations.
In a manner that left viewers puzzled, Damon Salvatore’s additional abilities were introduced. During Season 1, particularly in the pilot episode, Damon was depicted controlling weather conditions, creating heavy fogs at the cemetery where Elena resided. He also displayed the ability to command animals, specifically a crow, which he used to torment Stefan upon his return to the Salvatore residence.
Later on, I found myself communicating with Caroline from afar, not through conventional means but through telepathy – something unusual even among vampires. Yet, these talents vanished as swiftly as night follows day, and I never displayed them again beyond those initial few episodes. This left viewers like me questioning the fate of my powers and whether they would resurface in a critical moment when Damon desperately needed them to be back.
As a devoted movie buff, I must confess that not every series captivates me in the same way, but one show that’s always intriguing is the one where the magical herb known as vervain plays a pivotal role against vampires. Initially, the storyline made it abundantly clear that large doses of this herb could render a vampire helpless, and even a slight touch would cause them agony. However, as the plot unfolded, characters like Katherine and Damon were subtly hinted to have found ways to tolerate vervain over time, making them seemingly immune to its effects. It’s fascinating to witness how they manage this!
On the show, the depiction of vervain was inconsistent compared to the initial mythology. While some vampires appeared resistant to it, others showed extreme sensitivity. Moreover, in the beginning, vervain was portrayed as a scarce herb, yet it became ubiquitous in Mystic Falls, seemingly available to everyone. This constant disregard for the rules surrounding vervain caused much confusion among viewers.
Sire bonds represented an intriguing development in Klaus’s hybrid army creation process, becoming a unique ability he possessed. Werewolves transformed into hybrids by Klaus found themselves freed from the full moon cycle of transformation, thereby forming sire bonds with Klaus. This bond meant they would live solely to please him, carrying out any task he assigned them and the bonds were difficult to sever.
Instead of being a situation involving vampires, it turned out that when Elena became a vampire, she unintentionally formed a sire bond with Damon. The reasoning for this later on was that Elena had previously harbored feelings for Damon, which led to the bond, but this rationale didn’t seem convincing as it served to promote the ‘Delena’ relationship. Unlike other vampires such as Sage, Finn, Katherine, and even Damon and Stefan, who all loved someone before turning into vampires, none of them developed a sire bond like Damon and Elena did.
The ability for vampires to gaze into humans’ eyes and manipulate their thoughts to carry out their desires is called compulsion. This was a significant power possessed by vampires, and the Originals were also capable of compelling other vampires. Compulsion was an ironclad command that the compelled individual had no choice but to obey.
Instead of the rule being enforced when Stefan was forced by Klaus to harm Elena at Mystic Falls High School, it was actually set aside. In a surprising turn of events, Stefan resisted Klaus’ influence for a considerable amount of time, eventually managing to ask Elena to depart so as not to cause her harm. While this act was touching, there was no insight given into how Stefan, who was said to be incapable, could defy the supposedly unbreakable rule.
In the world of TVD, the emergence of the Cure was a significant shift because it offered a chance for vampires to regain their humanity. Yet, due to the inconsistent rules surrounding this elixir, fans are still puzzled about its true functioning today. When Katherine drank the Cure, it was specified that for another character to be cured, they would have to consume all of Katherine’s blood, which would cause her to age rapidly and eventually die.
When Bonnie attempted to heal Enzo, she drew a dose of the Cure from Elena and gave it to Stefan instead. Later, when Stefan cured Damon and ultimately sacrificed himself, he used the same amount. This raised doubts about the lore, since Katherine had been drained of blood without any apparent reason if only a syringe’s worth was necessary for the Cure.
In The Vampire Diaries’ Season 6, the enchantment called “The Sleeping Curse” by Kai and Lily imprisoned Elena in a coffin for years. Since her life was linked to Bonnie’s, as long as Bonnie remained alive, Elena had to remain asleep. When Bonnie’s life ended, Elena would finally awaken. This situation left no escape for Elena, and the characters in the series had to say goodbye to her for what appeared to be their entire lives.
When it came time for the series ending, Elena mysteriously gained the ability to visit Limbo and break free from her enchanted slumber thanks to a solution devised by Bonnie. The specific workings of this solution remained unexplained as there may not have been a plausible explanation behind it. In the final episode, Elena had to reappear, which meant she was awakened, but the intricate magic or loophole employed by Bonnie wasn’t further explained.
Among the intriguing aspects of the series, the tales surrounding Petrova and Salvatore’s doubles stood out, despite their backstory frequently shifting. At first, it was suggested that the Petrova doppelgänger came into existence because Tatia was utilized to create the Originals, whose immortality contradicted natural laws. However, further revelations uncovered a forbidden love triangle between the ancient immortals, Amara, Silas, and Qetsiyah, which led not just to one, but two lines of shadowy counterparts, each possessing magical abilities due to their doppelgänger nature.
In brief, Tatia, Katherine, and Elena were called “shadows” of Amara, while Stefan and Tom Avery mirrored Silas. Yet, this doesn’t imply that these individuals were the only doppelgängers worldwide. Over two millennia since Silas and Amara’s treachery, numerous replicas of the original pair could be found all over the world, with their true numbers remaining uncertain.
The Brotherhood of the Five was an exclusive band of supernatural hunters, specifically established to eliminate Silas. As they pursued Silas, these hunters also targeted and eliminated vampires. Upon the demise of the original Five, their roles were filled by new members who inherited their formidable physical prowess and intense aversion towards immortals.
In the end, it was Stefan, not the Brotherhood, who successfully murdered Silas and ensured his imprisonment. Following this incident, there were no further mentions about the Brotherhood, leaving us uncertain if they continued to exist once their primary objective had been achieved. It appeared odd that they didn’t finish off Silas themselves, as it rendered the entire reason for their existence obsolete with the permanent demise of the immortal.
Vampires possessed a useful yet unsettling talent: they could temporarily suppress their human traits when overpowered by emotions. This aid helped them navigate challenging situations, but it frequently led to harsh behavior towards humans and fellow vampires, adding to the complexity. However, it’s worth noting that the ‘humanity switch’ functioned differently for each vampire, causing some confusion.
When Caroline’s settings changed, she became remarkably composed and tranquil, showing no hint of aggression until provoked. Damon’s human side appeared to be on a low setting initially in “The Vampire Diaries,” allowing him to display empathy amidst his chilly demeanor. Stefan was a vampire who struggled with self-control when his human side was off, sometimes transforming into a Ripper. The specific workings of this switch remained unclear, making it a puzzling aspect of a vampire’s array of abilities.
Amongst the Originals, I’d have to say Mikael stood out as the most formidable and lethal. Being the Original patriarch, he possessed strength surpassing his offspring due to his past life as a mighty Viking warrior in human form. Despite desiring immortality for his kin, the sight of their bloodthirsty nature filled him with regret, leading him to transform into a vampire hunter, determined to eradicate them.
In my narrative, I portray myself as a character who, dedicated to my dark mission, chose to consume only the blood of vampires and hunt down fellow vampires among the Originals. Despite being a father, I found it within me to set my sights on my own offspring, a chilling twist that was left unexplained in the series. The transformation I underwent, from one of the Original family to their nemesis, was a complex journey, one that could have been the focus of an intriguing spinoff. Regrettably, the show provided scant details about my change, leaving many aspects of my backstory shrouded in mystery.
