11 Family Members Tragically Killed by Hurricane Helene

As a compassionate observer, I can only imagine the heart-wrenching pain and devastation that Jesse Craig and his family are going through after losing 11 loved ones in the tragic landslide caused by Hurricane Helene. The loss of such a significant portion of their family, as well as the destruction of their beloved community of Fairview, must feel unbearable.

One family is dealing with unimaginable loss in the wake of Hurricane Helene.

In Fairview, North Carolina, a sudden landslide on September 27, caused by unusually heavy rains from a severe storm, resulted in the tragic loss of 11 family members of Jesse Craig, as stated in a GoFundMe titled “Support the Craig Family After Heartbreaking Incident.

In a conversation with ABC11, Jesse said, “My parents, my aunt and uncle, plus my great aunt and uncle – those are the ones I’ve lost. Besides them, I’ve also lost several cousins, some who were second cousins, making it a total of 11 people from this landslide.

Beyond the heartbreaking damage, the cherished city known as “Craigtown” for its familial influence on the area for over eight decades, also endured severe destruction.

“It’s unrecognizable now,” Jesse continued, “but this is where I was born and raised.”

Jesse’s spouse, Kenzie Craig, is also deeply affected by the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene, as reportedly over 223 lives have been claimed by this hurricane according to NBC News.

As a lifestyle expert, I can tell you that this event has left me utterly bewildered and deeply affected. It’s our community, our town – a place we hold dear. I can’t help but feel that it may never return to its former state. This situation has been so life-altering that I find myself struggling to comprehend it fully. The days seem to blend together, and the passage of time feels hazy. I still haven’t managed to wrap my head around it yet, as if it happened an eternity ago. I can’t even remember what day it is now.

Besides Bryan Craig, another relative hailing from Craigtown, who mentioned they had just held a wedding within their family, also addressed the unfortunate incident.

Bryan shared, “The past week and a half has been quite challenging,” he told ABC13. “It’s heart-wrenching. Here I am, walking through the debris, holding a fan from the wedding. It means that we’ll have some truly beautiful memories from that event – memories of those who are sadly no longer with us.

As the family works towards recovery, MeKenzie underlined his wish for their tight-knit neighborhood not to be overlooked.

She emphasized to ABC11, “We aim to ensure this issue remains fresh in people’s minds for months to come. This isn’t a quick solution that will last a couple of weeks. We’re talking about long-term commitment. It will take several years of hard work to restore it to its former glory.
