13 Video Game Movies to Get Excited for Beyond The Zelda Delay

The movie adaptation of “The Legend of Zelda” has been postponed, but it doesn’t mean we should stop looking forward to other notable video game movies. It appears that Nintendo’s first live-action film in about 3 decades is expected to be directed by Wes Ball, who was behind the camera for “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.” This news adds another name in gaming to the list of those receiving a big-screen adaptation. Recently, Hollywood has seen an increase in success with video game adaptations, as evidenced by hits like “A Minecraft Movie” and “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” which have left audiences impressed over the past few years.

Just a few weeks following their initial announcement, Nintendo has postponed the release of Sony Pictures’ “The Legend of Zelda” movie. The film’s delay is attributed to production issues, as stated by Nintendo.

It was formally disclosed on Nintendo’s Nintendo Today mobile app and across their social media platforms that The Legend of Zelda will make its way to cinemas on May 7, 2027.

Hello! I’m Miyamoto. Due to production necessities, we have adjusted the release date of The Legend of Zelda live-action movie to May 7, 2027. This is slightly later than our initial schedule, but we’re using this extra time to ensure the film meets our high standards. We appreciate your understanding and patience.

The film’s release has been delayed by six weeks, moving it back on the schedule from its initially planned launch date of March 26, 2027.

As a cinephile, I’ve been eagerly awaiting updates on the upcoming video game movie, but details are still scant. Recently, insider Daniel Richtman hinted that Euphoria star Hunter Schafer might be in the running for the role of the Hylian princess – a fascinating prospect! However, neither Nintendo nor Sony have officially confirmed this exciting possibility yet.

The upcoming “The Legend of Zelda” film is being helmed by director Wes Ball, known for his work on “Maze Runner” and “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes”. Ball has expressed that this project is a dream for him, promising fans that they will find themselves content with how he brings the cherished Nintendo action-adventure series to life.

The most imminent video game movie adaptation set to hit theaters is the upcoming Mortal Kombat 2

Under the guidance of the original film’s writer and director, Simon McQuoid, the second installment of our blockbuster adaptation based on the popular R-rated fighting game series is set to pack a powerful punch in cinemas across the nation on October 24, 2025.

In this blood-drenched sequel, the standout novelty lies in the integration of the central tournament from the games, along with Tati Gabrielle, known to many from the HBO series “The Last of Us,” portraying Jade, and the casting of Karl Urban, recognized for his role in “The Boys,” as beloved character Johnny Cage.

Super Mario Bros. Movie 2

Moving forward, we can expect the release of “Super Mario Bros. Movie 2” next year, following the massive success of the first “Mario” movie which garnered over $1 billion at worldwide box offices in 2022. Given this tremendous earnings, it’s only logical for Nintendo and Illumination Entertainment to collaborate once more on an animated sequel.

In theaters on April 3, 2026, the new installment of the series will be released, featuring Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Jack Black reprising their roles as fan favorites Mario, Peach, and Bowser from the Mushroom Kingdom.

In the upcoming installment of the movie, fans are likely to notice a lot more characters from the games they recognize, such as Yoshi, Mario’s trusty dinosaur companion, who was hinted at in the first film. Sonic the Hedgehog 4

Among the highly acclaimed and commercially successful video game movie series is Paramount’s “Sonic The Hedgehog.” The fourth installment of “Sonic the Hedgehog” will speed into cinemas on March 19, 2027—a week before the planned release of the Zelda movie.

In the upcoming movie, audiences will find Ben Schartz reprising his role as the renowned blue-spiked hedgehog for SEGA, joined by Idris Elba as Knuckles and Colleen O’Shaughnessey as Tails.

This time, it’s going to be different, as Amy Rose with her hammer and the metallic threat, Metal Sonic, will be part of the action. This might indicate a reinterpretation of one of Sonic’s craziest video game escapades.

Street Fighter

The Capcom-created Street Fighter series has had its share of appearances on the big screen, yet enthusiasts continue to have high expectations that this new attempt at the cherished fighting game will outperform recent ones.

The upcoming “Street Fighter” film is being produced by Legendary Pictures and directed by Kitao Sakurai, who’s also known for his work on the “Eric Andre Show”. As of now, there’s no official word on when it will be released.

Unofficial details have emerged about the actors chosen for the popular franchise’s legendary characters: Jeff Sneider hinted in late May that Noah Centineo, Jason Momoa, and Roman Reigns might be playing famous fighters Ken, Blanka, and Akuma respectively, although these castings haven’t been confirmed yet.

Elden Ring

When FromSoftware put Elden Ring out into the world in 2022, it blew gamers’ minds.

Bandai Namco and A24 aim to replicate their efforts with an upcoming live-action Elden Ring film, helmed by the talented director Alex Garland, known for his work on Ex Machina and Civil War.

The upcoming Elden Ring film is rumored to feature Kit Connor, best known for his work in Warfare, taking on the role of an adventurer. This character is said to navigate through the fantastical world called the Lands Between, created by George R.R. Martin, where he encounters massive creatures and unravels the enigmas of a chilling dark fantasy realm.

Ghost of Tsushima

The film adaptation of PlayStation’s “Ghost of Tsushima” has been under production for some time now, without any official announcements regarding its release date or cast members being made public.

The upcoming movie is inspired by an open-world action RPG game developed by Sucker Punch Productions in 2020, sharing the same title. It narrates the story of a samurai named Jim who endeavors to safeguard his feudal Japanese homeland during its first Mongol invasion.

Filmmaker Chad Stahelski, known for the John Wick series, is set to direct a project for Sony Pictures. In an interview with TopMob in May 2022, Stahelski referred to this movie as one of the “remarkable projects” he was working on at that time.

Death Stranding

Following several decades of admiration for the extraordinary mind of celebrated game designer Hideo Kojima, cinema-goers will, at long last, experience firsthand the intriguing discussions we’ve had all these years.

The upcoming movie “Death Standing,” produced by A24, will be based on the storyline of the video game developed by Kojima Productions with the same title.

Day One”, Michael Sarnoski, is rumored to pen and direct the live-action film adaptation.

Horizon: Zero Dawn

Initially planned as a Netflix TV show, the adaptation of “Horizon: Zero Dawn” by PlayStation was later frozen in development and then unveiled again as a full-length movie instead.

At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2025, the announcement for a film adaptation of Horizon: Zero Dawn was made alongside various other upcoming PlayStation Studios projects. As of now, further details about the movie remain undisclosed.

The Horizon series originates from the creators at Guerrilla Games, known for developing Killzone, and it’s set in a post-post-apocalyptic landscape populated by primitive humans and an enormous variety of robotic dinosaurs.

Helldivers 2

Over the past few years, “Helldivers 2” has been among the most compelling narratives in gaming. Initially unveiled as a modest multiplayer cooperative shooter from Arrowhead Games, this online action game gained significant momentum, transforming into a viral sensation and one of the biggest titles in PlayStation history.

With all this success in mind, the logical next step was taking the franchise to the big screen.

At CES 2025, I was thrilled to learn about the upcoming movie titled “Helldivers” through nothing more than a captivating logo. Based on previous knowledge of the game, it’s safe to anticipate that this film will carry the same witty humor that the game is renowned for. It promises to be an outrageous, Starship Troopers-esque sci-fi journey tailored for contemporary audiences, and I can hardly wait!

BioShock

The film version of Netflix’s “BioShock” has been under production for quite some time, yet this hasn’t dampened the eagerness fans feel about seeing the 2007 first-person shooter hit from Irrational Games brought to life on screen.

This thrilling science fiction story chronicles a man from the 1940s who, following a catastrophic airplane accident, stumbles upon an underwater utopia that has long passed its prime.

As of May 2025, Director Francis Lawrence confirmed that the film is still being developed, even though there hasn’t been much news about it. He and his writing team are actively working on the script, as indicated by IGN. The movie does not yet have a scheduled release date.

The Sims

The highly anticipated movie adaptation of “The Sims,” created by Electronic Arts, is expected to leave fans discussing in a language reminiscent of the game’s own lingo as they exit the cinema, marking the first time the franchise has graced the big screen.

The movie was initially unveiled in September 2024, with Amazon MGM Studios, Vertigo Entertainment, as well as LuckyChap Entertainment led by Margot Robbie, taking charge of its production.

Director Kate Herron at Marvel Studios is working on a project that may incorporate elements similar to the sharp wit and social commentary seen in Robbie’s latest box office success, Barbie.

Gears Of War

Back in November 2022, plans for a movie adaptation of “Gears of War” were initially revealed. Netflix and developers The Coalition have been involved with this project from the start. In May 2025, it was disclosed that David Leitch, who has previously directed “Deadpool,” would be in charge of this film.

Gears of War represents one of the most significant gaming franchises for Xbox and Microsoft, encompassing six primary installments over almost two decades.

The narrative unfolds about a group of humans, called Cogs, engaging in combat with an enigmatic alien force, the Locust Horde, which unexpectedly burst forth from under their feet on a particular day.

Uncharted 2

The Uncharted series by PlayStation took some time to transition to the big screen, but once it did, its success was unstoppable. Despite receiving mixed reviews when the first movie starring Tom Holland premiered in 2022, it quickly became one of the top-grossing films of the year, accumulating a worldwide box office income of $407.1 million.

It was announced that a second film will be produced, centering around Holland’s globe-trotting adventurer. As reported by lead actor Mark Wahlberg, a script for the sequel of Uncharted has been penned down in December 2023; the challenge now lies in filming it and making it available to audiences.

It’s uncertain if the film will replicate the storyline from Naughty Dog’s cherished game, “Uncharted 2,” but what is certain is that fans can expect an exhilarating journey filled with treasure hunting as soon as it gets released.
