As an avid gamer who’s been through the gaming mill and back, I can confidently say that linear games like The Last of Us Part II have a special place in my heart. I remember playing the first one, getting emotionally invested in the characters, and then eagerly awaiting its sequel.
Linear video games still have a small but persistent cloud of criticism. They often feature predetermined paths, restricted exploration, and straightforward narratives which may limit the player’s freedom, an aspect not favored by everyone. However, if you prioritize a more polished gaming experience, or aren’t particularly keen on replaying games primarily for their stories, linear games could be the right choice. These types of games also showcase other strengths, such as inventive gameplay mechanics, well-rounded character development, and intricately designed game worlds.
In our analysis, we’re considering games that follow a structured narrative with distinct start, continuation, and conclusion points, where the progression from one stage to another is consistent across playthroughs. These games typically don’t include open worlds, Metroidvanias, extensive back-tracking, or exploration-focused gameplay. However, there are exceptions to this rule, which will be discussed in our upcoming feature.
The Last of Us Part II
In our 2023 game lineup predictions, we believe that The Last of Us Part II may offer a superior gaming experience compared to its predecessor, making it important not to overlook Naughty Dog’s brilliant sequel to their acclaimed (and criticized) post-apocalyptic series. Ellie has grown slightly older but remains impulsive, and there are more characters, intricate settings, and a thought-provoking, though contentious, plot that will evoke strong emotions regardless of whether you concur with the creative choices made by Naughty Dog.
