Just like Death Stranding 2: On the Beach retains the core elements of delivery, construction, and discovery from its predecessor, it introduces a host of enhancements, fresh features, and unexplored gameplay possibilities. From the battle mechanics to stealth tactics, vehicle handling, and mission designs, every aspect has been significantly expanded and refined in various ways. Here’s a sneak peek at some key differences as we gear up for its release on June 26th, exclusively on PS5.

Faster Paced, More Action
In the initial stages of Death Strnding, there was an emphasis on exploring the environment, moving cautiously through the terrain, and delivering parcels. Additionally, it laid significant groundwork for the world, considering its intricate lore, bizarre elements, and numerous characters. However, in Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, Kojima Productions has improved the pace by immersing players directly into gameplay, giving more emphasis on action-oriented sequences.
Overhauled Stealth
In the original game, stealth was effective, particularly when confronting MULEs. However, the sequel takes it to another level. Additional tools such as decoy grenades to confuse enemies, a silent handgun with tranquilizing bullets, and more are added to the traditional silent takedowns and Bolas Guns. You can also enhance your stealth abilities, like moving quietly or making less noise. Additionally, infiltrating bases at night offers an advantage because enemies are less alert. Moreover, Dollman can be used tactically to distract guards, enabling you to sneak past them or subdue them. A nod to a certain character, V, is also present in this stealth-focused gameplay.
New Movement Abilities
In Death Stranding 2, Sam has significantly increased mobility compared to the first game. He’s equipped with new moves like sliding for swiftly moving into cover while staying low or charging at an enemy, and diving to reposition and dodge damage. However, it’s questionable whether these strategies are optimal, especially when loaded with heavy cargo. But remember, in this game…
Lower Sam’s Backpack
In the game Death Stranding 2, Sam will no longer be burdened by a towering pile of crates on his back while sneaking around MULE camps or evading enemies. Instead, he can now leave his backpack behind, enhancing his stealthiness and agility significantly. While you’re only armed with what you’ve equipped, this change could make a significant impact on infiltration and combat scenarios. However, don’t forget to pick up your backpack once the mission is complete!
Changes to Returning Characters
Ten months have elapsed, and the world seems more puzzling than ever. Drawbridge, a fresh enterprise beyond the UCA, has been established by Fragile who now leads it. Heartman’s upgraded with a support structure that enables him to “expire” upright, thus safeguarding his body from danger. As for Higgs, he’s back from the Beach with a clown mask and an electric guitar in tow. Deadman and Die-Hardman are set to reappear, but it remains unclear how much they’ve evolved (though the latter is no longer UCA president according to GameSpot’s preview).
Day/Night Cycle, Dynamic Weather and Natural Disasters
In Death Stranding, the visuals were so lifelike it felt like stepping into a real world, but the absence of a day-night cycle took some of the immersion away. However, the sequel not only maintains this realism, but also introduces additional benefits for stealth. What sets it apart is the dynamic environment that significantly affects gameplay. For instance, a landslide might force you to adjust your path, dust storms reduce visibility, flash floods could wash both Sam and his cargo away, and strong earthquakes could make him lose balance.
Animal Rescue and Restoring Mines
In Australia or the UCA, the traditional tasks and deliveries remain a significant part of the gameplay. But in the sequel, they’re broadening the variety of missions significantly. These can range from rescuing animals and transporting them to sanctuaries, all the way to repairing mines and the monorail. Some tasks even pop up outside of regular orders, adding even more diversity to the list of activities you can engage in.
New Weapons and MP Bullets
In contrast to its predecessor, Death Stranding 2 seems to focus more on action-packed combat sequences, taking inspiration from James Cameron’s Aliens. Director Hideo Kojima aims for a “new dimension” with these battles. New weapons have been introduced, such as the Blood Boomerang, Tar Cannon, and the MULEs’ Electrified Pole, which can also be thrown to discharge electricity in a small area. Additionally, there are grenade launchers and MP Bullets that switch ammo type based on the target automatically.
New Enemy Types
In the sequel titled “Death Stranding 2: On the Beach“, the eeriness of the stranded objects is amplified by the addition of a new entity called the Watcher, which has the ability to spot you and call for reinforcements to ensnare Sam. The Armed Survivalists prove to be more formidable than the MULEs in combat, but that’s not all – you must also contend with Chiral Creatures, ranging from spiders, bats, and even jellyfish. Be cautious as these creatures can swarm around you; the bat-like ones have the capacity to drain your battery power if you’re not vigilant.
Vehicle Changes
In addition to facilitating faster transportation, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach offers numerous upgrades for vehicles. For instance, turrets can now be mounted for self-defense, and you no longer need to dismount to grapple cargo or Chiral crystals. Moreover, certain vehicles are now operable in water (hopefully consuming less battery power).
Connecting Ladders and New Boots
In the sequel, I’m thrilled about the ability to link up to two ladders when traversing gaps, making it a breeze! Plus, the variety of boots is fantastic – from stealthy ones for sneaking undetected to those that boost my kicks in close-quarters combat. And let’s not forget the enhancements made to structures like zip lines that now bend around obstacles, ensuring a smoother journey throughout the game world.
Corefall
Timefall, an existing phenomenon, has been joined by a fresh enigma – Corefall. This peculiar occurrence is linked solely to a new character named Rainy, as pointed out in GameSpot’s preview. When Timefall comes within 1.5 meters of her, it transforms into Corefall, which interestingly makes things appear younger. With Tomorrow’s unique talent for moving through tar, one can’t help but speculate how Rainy’s unusual power will factor in, given the significant repercussions.
New Cryptobiotes
In this revised game version, Cryptobiotes serve as your primary method for healing HP or blood. However, there’s a new twist: Electrobiotes will now recharge your battery, and Chlorobiotes assist in stamina recovery. It remains unclear if additional types offer extra advantages, but it wouldn’t be unexpected.
New Skeletons
In Death Stranding, if you had the necessary power source, various skeletons could be equipped to gain special advantages: The Power Skeleton increased carrying capacity, the All-terrain Skeleton facilitated navigation through rougher landscapes, and the Speed Skeleton enhanced your speed. The upcoming Death Stranding 2 introduces three additional ones – the Battle Skeleton, Bokka Skeleton, and Boost Skeleton. Although the roles of the last two are yet to be revealed, the Battle Skeleton offers significant protection in combat situations, making it ideal for engaging in firefights.
Length
On the Beach,” hasn’t been confirmed yet. However, based on various reports, people have spent around 30 hours playing it, which is roughly 40% of the story according to Kojima Productions. This suggests that completing the main story alone might take about 75 hours. Since the first game could take up to 113 hours for completionists, it’s possible that “Death Stranding 2” could offer additional playtime even after the ending, potentially many more dozens of hours.
