It turns out that the universe is far more vast than we initially perceive. Sung Jin-woo finds himself in an unimaginable predicament as he takes on the role of “The Player,” but there are forces in his realm that dwarf even the mightiest bosses from an S-Rank Gate. The strength of the top characters in Solo Leveling sometimes borders on Lovecraftian terror, and the Rulers and Monarchs possess such immense power that they could potentially bring about the destruction of the world just by their mere existence.
For Sung Jin-woo, dealing with life-threatening situations is nothing out of the ordinary; since he started as a lowly E-Rank Hunter, he’s been in over his head participating in dungeon raids that were beyond his capabilities. These close calls with death have been instrumental in shaping him into a stronger individual. However, if he wants to defeat the most powerful beings in his world, he must rise above even death itself. Simultaneously, Jin-woo manages to level up at an astonishing pace, outgrowing nearly every danger that comes his way.
On April 30, 2025, Ajay Aravind made a revision. This update comes after the conclusion of Season 2 for “Solo Leveling”. Both fans and critics have praised the anime for its significant enhancement compared to its first season. The introduction of new, formidable characters in “Solo Leveling” has pushed our protagonist to even greater heights. As the anime has yet to unveil all the strongest characters from the series, this list has been expanded with five additional entries – several of which remain exclusive to the manhwa.
Suho Might Become the Next Monarch of Destruction
In the concluding chapter, it is revealed that Sung Suho, Jin-woo’s son, demonstrates the potent power he received from his father. Born as the offspring of the Shadow Monarch and one of the most powerful Hunters in Solo Leveling, Suho was destined to be among the strongest individuals globally since birth. However, due to his powers becoming increasingly conspicuous, Jin-woo decided to suppress them until he could guide his son in mastering their control more effectively.
In his solo training battles, Suho managed to overpower a significant number of Jin-woo’s troops single-handedly. Notably, he defeated Bellion, Beru, and Igris. Although the full extent of Suho’s capabilities remains to be seen, given that he is already surpassing the abilities of any S-Rank character while still in high school, it won’t be long before Suho matches his father’s power. However, as a relatively new character in Solo Leveling: Ragnarok, Suho currently ranks at the bottom of our list.
The King of Demons Was a Tough Opponent
The Ruler of White Infernos and the ultimate foe in Demon Fortress, Baran served as the terrifying Demon King. Given his constant eagerness for combat, Baran was particularly thrilled when Jin-woo emerged before him. Unlike numerous characters within Solo Leveling, however, the Demon King adhered to a strict code of honor, which led him to attack Ashborn at Antares’ command. Despite this, the previous Shadow Monarch viciously defeated Baran after their encounter.
In the Demon Castle, the Baran Jin-woo fought was a duplicate created by Kandiaru, yet this clone proved to be a tough adversary for the newly appointed Hunter. During their initial skirmish, Baran seemed to have the upper hand against Jin-woo, leaving him struggling until Esil Radiru stepped in at a crucial moment to help him win. Given how powerful the clone was, it’s evident that the original Baran, in his prime, must have been incredibly formidable.
The Architect Built and Manipulated the System
In the popular series “Solo Leveling,” one of the initial characters presented is known as The Architect. This individual plays a crucial role by establishing the system that grants Jin-woo extraordinary abilities and facilitates his rapid leveling up. However, it was no surprise to fans when Kandiaru emerged as an antagonist, with a malevolent intent to aid Ashborn in reclaiming his title as the exiled Monarch. Interestingly, Kandiaru also harbored aspirations of becoming the Monarch of Transfiguration himself, a sign of his lofty ambitions.
After Jin-woo surpassed Level 100, the Architect asked him to the Double Dungeon, intending to let Ashborn take control of Jin-woo. Jin-woo managed to overcome Kandiaru, but was put into a trance so Ashborn could carry out his scheme. While Kandiaru was momentarily distracted by some Hunters, Jin-woo found himself coming to, now possessing Ashborn’s dark heart. He then fought and defeated the Architect. However, Kandiaru still being alive hints at…
The Monarch of Iron Body Fought a Fierce Final Battle
1. In contrast to conventional monarchs who often portrayed themselves as tough battle-hardened warriors, the self-proclaimed King of Monstrous Humanoids, Tarnak, presented himself in an exceptionally elegant manner, reflecting his arrogant personality. The Iron Body Monarch, however, also showed disrespect towards Jin-woo as Ashborn’s successor, but even Tarnak acknowledged that the emerging Shadow Monarch was a handful to deal with on his own.
2. Unlike typical monarchs, who were often depicted as strong warriors, the King of Monstrous Humanoids, Tarnak, stood out for his refined and haughty appearance. The Iron Body Monarch scoffed at Jin-woo as Ashborn’s successor, but even Tarnak admitted that the rising Shadow Monarch was a handful to manage alone.
3. Contrary to most monarchs who were typically battle-hardened warriors, the King of Monstrous Humanoids, Tarnak, distinguished himself with his elegant and condescending demeanor. The Iron Body Monarch looked down upon Jin-woo as Ashborn’s successor, but even Tarnak acknowledged that the budding Shadow Monarch was a handful for one person to handle.
Tarnak’s nickname embodied his extraordinary resilience, enhancing his physique through the Iron Body Fortification skill. Yet, his overconfidence proved fatal for him. Known as The Monarch of Iron Body, he entered combat with Thomas Andre, unaware of the cunning trap that lay in wait. Despite his best efforts, Tarnak was no match against Andre, Bellion, and Beru, ultimately meeting his demise at their hands.
The Frost Monarch Was Also Reckless
Despite not having faced Sillad yet, the Frost Monarch demonstrated a formidable challenge. His speed was almost unparalleled, and his ice magic was potent enough to halt even the top-tier S-Rank Hunters mid-stride. If it weren’t for his intelligence in recognizing his own limitations and enlisting the aid of his fellow Monarchs against the Shadow Monarch, the Frost Monarch might not have lasted long against Sung Jin-woo.
1. The Frost King effortlessly annihilated a Ship of the Lords, and merely one of his ice attacks kept a multitude of Jin-woo’s Shadow Soldiers at bay. However, Sillad’s imprudent actions during his battle with Jin-woo ultimately led to his own downfall. Regardless of his inflated pride, even the Frost King was eventually compelled to acknowledge that he was significantly overpowered in this encounter.
2. The Frost Monarch swiftly obliterated a Vessel belonging to the Rulers and with a single ice spell managed to deter a horde of Jin-woo’s Shadow Soldiers. Nevertheless, Sillad’s rash behavior during his confrontation with Jin-woo eventually sealed his fate. Despite his excessive self-confidence, even the Frost Monarch was eventually made aware that he was no match for Jin-woo in this fight.
The Monarch of Plagues Regenerated from a Fatal Injury
In the world of Solo Leveling, I bear witness to the reign of none other than Queen Hershka, the lone female Monarch and an exceptionally formidable character. Labeled as the Monarch of Plagues, this regal figure holds sway over insects. However, her unfortunate stereotype as a toxic femme fatale doesn’t diminish the raw power she wields, even the most overused clichés can’t tarnish that.
What makes Queen Hershka truly captivating is her ruthless nature; she treats adversaries with a predator’s relish, sizing them up as if they were merely playthings to toy with. Her bloodlust is undeniable, and it’s an exhilarating sight to behold.
In her role as the Insect Queen, Querehsha was fixated on something that proved to be a crucial weakness in the heat of battle. This distraction enabled Jin-woo to execute a surprise attack, splitting her body in two. Despite the severity of the wound, Querehsha quickly healed herself. However, her attempt to poison Jin-woo failed due to his exceptional immunity. After analyzing their ultimate confrontation, it’s safe to say that the Insect Queen doesn’t make it into the top 10 on our list.
The Monarch of Fangs Also Stabbed Jin-woo’s Heart
In the realm of Solo Leveling, it’s widely acknowledged that Baran, the King of Beasts, is one of the most fearsome fighters. His imposing physique, sharp teeth, and luminous eyes exude a sense of danger. It’s his aggressive nature in combat that fuels him, making him show extreme bloodlust towards anyone daring enough to confront him. But as fans delved deeper into his character, they found that the Lord of Fangs was not just ferocious; he also displayed cowardice and hypocrisy, contrary to his battlefield demeanor.
Later on, Rakan, known as the Monarch of Fangs, left the audience in awe when he single-handedly defeated the top-ranked Hunter globally, Thomas Andre. This victory was followed by the emergence of Jin-woo onto the battlefield, causing Rakan to launch an attack (alongside two other Monarchs). What stood out most was that Rakan seemed to have fatally wounded Jin-woo when he plunged a weapon through his heart. However, it turned out to be futile as Jin-woo had already survived at that point.
The Monarch of the Beginning Fought Jin-woo in Chains
The true power of Legia is evident in the events leading up to his demise. When Jin-woo initially encountered him, Legia was already captured and imprisoned by the Rulers, bound in chains. Despite this, he attempted to negotiate with Jin-woo, but when Jin-woo discerned his deceit, he tried to slay the Monarch of the Beginning while he was still shackled. Remarkably, even in chains, the First Monarch refused to surrender without a struggle.
Jin-woo suggested that if Legia had been free from the start of their battle, he wouldn’t have been able to win against him. However, this is quite different from how Jin-woo performed against other Monarchs, particularly the Frost, Beast, and Plague Monarchs, whom he fought alone in a 3-versus-1 fight. Before his demise, the First Monarch shared many secrets with Jin-woo, which helped him get ready for what was coming next.
The Monarch of Transfiguration Fell to Dragon’s Fear
Though his combat abilities aren’t extensively displayed, Yogumunt is strongly suggested as one of the most potent and intelligent monarchs. In the light novel, it’s mentioned that among all monarchs, Yogumunt was the hardest for Jin-woo to defeat, second only to the Monarch of Destruction. The specifics of their battle are left unspoken, but it’s probable that Yogumunt’s keen intellect made him such a formidable adversary for Jin-woo.
While the Monarch of Transfiguration possesses an immense ability to conjure countless monstrous beings matching the might of the Shadow Monarch’s horde, and has the capacity to open gates for transporting armies of other Monarchs whenever needed. However, Yogumunt ultimately succumbed to Jin-woo’s Dragon’s Fear method and was subdued as a result. In the closing chapters, Jin-woo tracked down the Monarch of Transfiguration and swiftly defeated Yogumunt.
The Fragments of Light Tend to Fight Together
As guardians of the Ultimate Reality, these sovereign beings were uniquely crafted by the cosmic creator to shield and safeguard the universe using their immense might. Individually, their battle prowess remains unseen, as they usually engage in collective confrontations. Yet, their group accomplishments are among the most impressive within the narrative. The downside to their unfathomable power lies in their inability to fully harness it in the physical realm.
The Governors not only dethrone the original architect of the cosmos, but they deliver the fatal strike to Antares, the mightiest of Kings. They also vanquished Ashborn with their collective might, although that was before he transformed into the Shadow King. Given that Bellion is a weaker equivalent of the Governors and the uncontested strongest soldier in the Shadow King’s forces, it seems fair to assume that each of the Governors surpasses any of them in power.
