Warner Bros. launched an intriguing marketing strategy for their upcoming horror film, titled “Weapons,” on Monday. A dedicated website for the fictional news outlet, Maybrook News, was created to unveil a teaser. The plot revolves around Zach Cregger’s new movie, where 17 children have mysteriously vanished in the quaint town of Maybrook. Interestingly, it appears the children left on their own accord, as evidenced by footage from home security cameras, all showing they departed at exactly 2:17 a.m. The website also features another story, which isn’t mere filler — it hints at the mystery surrounding Cregger’s previous film, “Barbarian,” suggesting these two movies share the same narrative timeline.
The promotional website portrays a local news-like atmosphere by claiming that the mysterious simultaneous disappearances have deeply affected the community. It assures that an investigation is ongoing, and although there’s no evidence of forced abduction, these cases are not being considered as runaways either. In another report titled “Underground Prison Found in Rental House,” the newspaper refers to Barbarian.
The article summarizes the storyline of “Barbarian” as if it were a news report, and while “Barbarian” takes place in Detroit, “Weapons” is said to be set in a small Florida town. This makes it difficult to guess any links between these two films, but even a subtle reference could excite fans.
Known primarily for his involvement with the comedy group The Whitest Kids U’ Know, particularly their sketch comedy TV shows on FUSE and IFC, Cregger later ventured into television, working on three sitcoms throughout the subsequent years. This shift to horror, however, came as a bit of a surprise. In 2022, he wrote and directed the highly praised film Barbarian. The plot revolved around the uncovering of a hidden underground chamber for torture within a rundown suburban home, making it a headline-worthy topic in Maybrook, Florida.
In addition to penning the script for “Weapons,” Cregger is also responsible for its creation. The plot apparently encompasses elements of witchcraft and “blood rituals,” along with police misconduct and religious exploitation. The film boasts an impressive cast including Josh Brolin, Julia Garner, Alden Ehrenreich, and Benedict Wong, among others. As of now, “Weapons” has been advanced on Warner Bros.’ schedule and is set to be released in theaters on August 8th, 2025. At this moment, “Barbarian” is not accessible through any streaming services that require a subscription, but it can be rented or purchased digitally on PVOD platforms.
