Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 is an engine that generates turmoil and remorse, yet rest assured, I’m using that as a form of high praise for the game. It involves a myriad of repercussions due to my terrible choices, coupled with Stalker-esque swordsworthy randomness driven by complex systems, creating an atmosphere that is both challenging and intriguing.
I’ve had encounters with Cumans due to my poor choice of attire; seen my carefully laid battle strategies disrupted by wandering NPC caravans; found myself in heated battles that escalated into chaotic, violent skirmishes as more individuals joined or intervened; and bemoaned the absence of save-game potions countless times. It’s incredibly enjoyable, with an array of peculiar factors influencing the unpredictable escapades I find myself in. With approximately 20 hours spent on the game, I’ve barely scratched the surface of the main quest, as I’ve been so absorbed in exploring and observing the world’s responses to my actions.
Unforeseen consequences
Although I can’t give you many details about the plot of KCD2, as Fraser has already covered that in his preview from last August (specifically, its Kevin and Perry Go Bohemia narrative), I still have some intriguing stories to share with you. If you enjoy watching things go awry, then you’re definitely in the right place!
In other words, let me tell you about my earlier encounter with the Cumans, which was a key event in King’s Bounty 2 at the start of the game in Trosky. After a while, I managed to earn some money and find elegant attire (by mercilessly beating an aristocrat on the road). Later, I decided to return to the inn and apologize to the innkeeper. You see, she might be more willing to listen now that I’ve upgraded my clothing in KCD, for a change of clothes can have a significant impact in this game. Those who previously showed me disrespect due to my ragged garb will now show deference if I appear in fine attire and expensive jewelry.
My frilly pantaloons entailed a serious hit to my capacity for intimidation
In a turn of events, I turned out to be correct, and the innkeeper, whose voice carried the sharp, rapid rhythm akin to an M1 Garand, graciously forgave me. However, there was a condition: I had to assist her and cater to the table of intimidating Cuman mercenaries who happened to dine at the inn. It seemed like a straightforward arrangement, but another guest raised an objection about foreign soldiers eating in the inn, which left me in a vulnerable position because my frilly pantaloons significantly diminished my ability to instill fear (to put it simply, my intimidation score was abysmal).
Since I couldn’t deter him from instigating a confrontation, just a handful of farmers and myself—both sporting trendy glasses and jester-style hoses—found ourselves squaring off against four tough Cuman warriors, all heavily armed and armored. Needless to say, things didn’t go well. To make matters worse, I had discarded any armor I had earlier due to its poor condition and the fact that it exceeded my carrying capacity. I didn’t have a moment to retrieve armor because the Cumans would eventually depart if nobody responded to their demands. In the end, I was left with no choice but to join forces with the Cumans, who were more than capable of handling the enraged farmers themselves. Tough luck, peasants.
Over time, a series of seemingly unrelated decisions had pinned me into a particular line of action. Discarding my armor, stealing a noble’s attire, attempting to rebuild some of my tarnished reputation in Trosky by befriending the innkeeper, and finding myself ill-equipped to either intimidate or overcome an adversary, left me with few viable alternatives except to align with a band of invading mercenaries against the town’s residents. Choices based on material needs, outcomes shaped by ideological beliefs.
For some gamers, witnessing the consequences of their actions unfold could be perceived as the most disheartening aspect of gaming. However, for me and my fellow enthusiasts, that very experience – observing the ripple effects of our decisions – is precisely why we play games. And in Kingside II: Definitive Edition, every intricate system ensures a generous serving of this exhilarating moment.
On the brighter side, things can also be downright absurd at times. For instance, when I was trying to sneakily dismantle a bandit camp, an enormous caravan miraculously rolled by and obliterated them all. Or consider my skirmish with a highway robber; it was going smoothly until a clumsy huntsman intervened, raining arrows on my shins while I struggled to position my foe between me and him. Alas, he was inept, and I ended up dodging his poor aim as I fought for my life. To make matters worse, I had run out of saving potions earlier, so when I eventually met my demise, I lost approximately 20 minutes of hard-earned progress.
During my playtime of the game, it often reminds me of some of Stalker’s finest aspects. The issue is whether this approach carries over effectively to the game’s storyline. Will Henry’s journey feel as impactful and personal as the immediate experiences I’ve encountered thus far? At present, I’m unable to answer that question definitively. Perhaps after another 20 hours of gameplay, I will have spent enough time exploring the game’s mechanics to uncover its narrative depth.
