20 years ago, Fergie and the Black Eyed Peas started music’s grandest evening with the popular song “Let’s Get It Started.” This tune smoothly transitioned into a musical mix of early 2000s hits, which included Gwen Stefani during her Harajuku Girl phase, rapper Eve, Maroon 5, Franz Ferdinand, and Los Lonely Boys.
A multitude of celebrities such as Bono, Tim McGraw, and Norah Jones gathered to pay tribute to the victims of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. They performed a cross-genre rendition of “Across the Universe” by The Beatles.
Back then, I simply couldn’t resist the magnetic pull of Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony as they graced the stage together, belting out their heartfelt duet “Escapemono.” Their performance was a powerfully emotional spectacle that I’ll never forget.
However, among all the performers, it was this divorced duo – who parted ways in 2014 following a decade of marriage and the birth of their two children – that truly captivated audiences back then.
At the event, Gwen was accompanied by her husband at the time, Gavin Rossdale, whereas Lisa Marie Presley walked with Michael Lockwood on the red carpet. They got married the year after this event but separated in 2016 following the birth of their twin daughters. Sadly, Lisa Marie passed away in 2024 at the age of 54.
That evening, Adam Levine and Maroon 5 solidified their place in the music industry by winning the prestigious Best New Artist award.
Simultaneously, John Mayer received an award for Song of the Year for “Daughters,” while Alicia Keys collected three awards in the Best R&B Album, Best Female R&B Vocal Performance, and Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals categories.
Among the attendees, some big names in Hollywood graced the guest list, such as Beyoncé, Matthew McConaughey, and Penélope Cruz.
