2009 PS3 and Xbox 360 Game Is Now Free to Download and Keep

As a nostalgic gamer who lived through the golden age of gaming in 2009, I can’t help but feel a twinge of excitement when I hear about games from that era being made available again. Dark Sector is one such game, and while it may not have been a blockbuster hit back then, it’s now free on Steam and worth checking out.

2009 games like Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, Dragon Age: Origins, Assassin’s Creed II, Borderlands, Demon’s Souls, Grand Theft Auto IV: The Ballad of Gay Tony, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Bayonetta, Infamous, Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time, Brutal Legend, Wii Sports Resort, Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, Empire: Total War, Plants vs. Zombies, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Resident Evil 5, Killzone 2, Halo 3: ODST, Left 4 Dead 2, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 from that year are now available for free download. Keep in mind these classics were originally released on the PS3 and Xbox 360.

2009 was quite a bustling year with numerous major launches. Consequently, several games may have slipped past people’s attention and now reside in obscurity. One such game, undoubtedly, is Dark Sector from Digital Extremes – a studio that has been active since the 1990s. Now under Tencent’s ownership, they are particularly renowned for Warframe and collaborating on the development of the Unreal series.

2009 saw the launch of Dark Sector, a third-person shooter playable on Xbox 360 and PS3. Unfortunately, this game didn’t create a global sensation, as indicated by its moderate sales and a Metacritic score of 73. However, it served as a catalyst for the later phenomenon, Warframe, which has achieved immense popularity.

Unfortunately, you can’t download the game for free on the PlayStation Store or Xbox Store, but luckily, it’s available for free download on Steam until November 30. It’s puzzling why they’ve decided to make it free all of a sudden, as typically, this timeless classic costs $10.

If you’re considering downloading and keeping the game on Steam since it’s now free, be aware that its Steam Deck compatibility is currently listed as “Undetermined.” The gameplay duration varies between eight to eleven hours, with the shorter end (eight hours) representing a standard playthrough, while the longer end (eleven hours) represents a more comprehensive, completionist experience.

The game, Dark Sector, places you as Hayden Tenno, a secret agent embarking on a perilous assignment in the crumbling Eastern European city of Lasria. This metropolis is teetering on the edge, concealing a chilling Cold War mystery. During this mission, Hayden encounters an unidentified assailant and gets infected by the Technocyte Virus – a lethal biological weapon that transforms its hosts into ruthless, mind-controlled attackers. Miraculously escaping this assault, Hayden discovers that the virus has endowed him with extraordinary, inhuman abilities beyond anything he’s ever known. Now, he must adapt to these powers, endure and ultimately emerge as a hero.

Hey there! I’ve got some exciting news for fellow gaming enthusiasts like me. If you snag the free game offer on Steam right now, it’s yours to keep and play whenever you fancy until the end of time (or at least until November 30). But here’s the catch: this deal won’t last forever! After November 30, there’s no certainty that we’ll get another chance to grab it – not even next week. So, don’t let this golden opportunity slip away, my friends! Let’s seize the day and enjoy the game while we can!
