At the 2024 Emmys red carpet, the actress from “American Horror Story” shared an exclusive reason why, although she was nominated for her guest role in “Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” she was content with just supporting her girlfriend during her nomination for “Outstanding Supporting Actress” in “The Morning Show.
Sarah shared her heartfelt feelings with Laverne Cox on Live From TopMob: Emmys, stating, “For years, Holland has been my unwavering support through everything, and tonight, it’s me who gets to hold her purse. Last weekend, I was nominated, and she is a Primetime Emmy nominee too. It feels incredibly special to be standing here with her.
Sarah’s award category, which was won by Michaela Coel for her guest appearance in Mr. and Mrs. Smith, was announced at the 2024 Creative Arts Emmys on September 8. However, even though Holland, aged 81, didn’t win, he didn’t hesitate to applaud Sarah, who is 49 years old, for her impressive tally of Emmy nominations so early in her career.
“Both nine, I’ve had much longer to accomplish that,” Holland added to TopMob. “Decades longer.”
Despite having her girlfriend of nine years by her side without a doubt, Holland unfortunately didn’t win the Outstanding Supporting Actress trophy. Instead, it went to Elizabeth Debecki from The Crown, who beat out notable contenders like Christine Baranski, Greta Lee, Lesley Manville, as well as Holland’s costars Nicole Beharie and Karen Pittman on The Morning Show.
Nevertheless, Holland enjoyed portraying her character alongside Nicole, particularly a demanding scene where her character, Cybil, grappled with her own racism. She appreciated this role most because, as she stated, “It was incredibly rewarding to take on such a challenging character.
She remarked to TopMob, “It felt quite self-referential.” In the conversation, she found herself in a delicate racial predicament, and her interviewer was also present. The one who made the regrettable blunder and the one asking the questions had to navigate through it. It was an incredibly challenging experience. I’m an older white woman, and she is a journalist of color. Despite the discomfort, we found solace in each other.
