2024 MTV VMAs: Chappell Roan Performs Amid Backlash for Canceled Shows

As I gaze upon these captivating images of celebrities, it stirs within me a sense of admiration and wonder for the lives they lead. Each face tells a story, a tale woven with glitz, glamour, and unparalleled success.

H-O-T-T-O-G-O, Chappell Roan just stole the show.

At the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards, the artist famous for “Hot To Go!” made her first appearance on an award show, taking the stage at UBS Arena in New York City on September 11 to perform her popular song “Good Luck, Babe!”.

Showcasing a dance routine inspired by the Middle Ages, the track from Chappell’s 2023 debut album titled “The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess” had numerous celebrities swaying to its rhythm. (To view all the stars on the red carpet, click here.)

At the start of the show, Chappell donned a gleaming knight’s costume and brandished a blazing crossbow, leading up to the song “Good Luck, Babe!” amidst cascading flames surrounding her.

As Kayleigh Rose Amstutz, affectionately known as Chappell, I find myself recognized among the brightest new talents in the music industry. In this esteemed ceremony, I’m competing against Benson Boone, Gracie Abrams, Tyla, Shaboozey, and Teddy Swims for the Best New Artist accolade. But the excitement doesn’t stop there! I’m also vying for the coveted Performance of the Year award, sharing the stage with the likes of Benson, Teddy, GloRilla, Coco Jones, Victoria Monet, Jessie Murph, Laufey, Le SSerafim, and The Warning. This recognition is truly an honor, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for all of us!

Although Chappell’s VMAs performance was well-received, not everyone was pleased when it appeared that she chose the VMAs over some of her European tour dates. In fact, after she cancelled shows on September 3rd and 4th in Paris and Amsterdam—explaining later via a Sept. 3 Instagram Story that it was for rehearsals related to the VMAs—her international fans expressed their discontent on social media.

One critic remarked on August 29th that cancelling two performances at short notice to attend the VMAs was extremely unprofessional. They added that many up-and-coming artists seem to lack regard for their fans.

Could the addition to X cause sorrow among fans, who are questioning if it’s truly worth missing their beloved artist for just a brief five-minute appearance at an awards ceremony?

As a die-hard admirer, I must confess that her showcase at that prestigious gathering left me utterly bewildered. Her act seemed to clash starkly with the candid words she’s shared about her challenges in navigating her meteoric ascent into stardom.

Last month, Chappell called out  “creepy behavior” amid her summer of chart success.

She clarified on her August 18 TikTok that just because such actions as abuse, harassment, stalking, and other harmful behaviors are often directed towards famous individuals, this does not make them acceptable or standard. She emphasized that she neither condones nor finds these actions desirable or enjoyable.

Chappell encountered criticism when she spoke out against certain followers, yet numerous other famous individuals like Shawn Mendes and Jewel voiced their support for her.

In her own words, the lead singer of Paramore, Hayley Williams, stated, “This issue seems to affect every woman I’m acquainted with from this industry. I’m incredibly grateful that Chappell is taking action to confront it honestly and immediately.
