2024 National Dog Show: How Winner Vito the Pug Made History

As a dedicated dog lover with a soft spot for pugs, I can’t help but be ecstatic about Vito’s historic win at the 2024 National Dog Show! Having spent countless hours around these adorable, wrinkly bundles of joy, I can attest to their unique charm and charisma.

There’s a new top dog in America.

On November 28th, 2024, during the National Dog Show, Vito the Pug captured everyone’s affection and earned the prestigious “Best in Show” title. This adorable 2-year-old pooch became the first of his breed to claim this distinguished prize.

Year after year, I found myself enthralled by the spectacle of the Thanksgiving Day Canine Competition, a stage that draws the crème de la crème of canines from an astonishing 205 different breeds. But this time was different – this year, I was part of the action! Amongst the throng of around 2,000 furry competitors, my heart pounded with anticipation as I watched my beloved Vito strut his stuff.

Following that, I found myself matched stride for stride with victors from various show categories: Houston, the graceful Clumber Spaniel, Monty, the imposing Giant Schnauzer, Zit, the agile Ibizan Hound, Rupert, the elegant Berger Picard, JJ, the charming Lhasa Apso, and Verde, the swift Welsh Terrier. Notably, Verde was named the reserve best in show, the runner-up to Vito.

Carolyn Koch, one of Vito’s co-owners, expressed her immense pride to NBC News. She also mentioned that she particularly adores and specializes in the breeding of Pugs.

As for how Vito wowed the judges?

According to the best-in-show judge, George Milutinovich, this compact pup embodies all the essential characteristics. It’s just what a Pug ought to be.

In fact, Milutinovich described Vito as “lots of dog in a small package.”

He had never encountered this person before, but was astonished, exclaiming, “Wow, just wow!” Seeing a pug always brings joy, as if their very presence puts a smile on your face.

Before the occasion, which was organized by the Kennel Club of Philadelphia and sponsored by Purina, Vito’s caretaker, Michael Scott, was feeling quite hopeful about a triumph.

Besides the 24 top awards Vito has previously earned in other contests, Scott mentioned that the 18-pound dog boasts a stunningly beautiful head and captivating expression which is sure to leave anyone impressed.

He added, “Great outline.”

Vito takes over the throne previously held by Stache the Sealyham Terrier, who was the first dog of his breed to receive the “Best in Show” honor at the National Dog Show.

In the past eight years, Stache emerged victorious among a strong lineup of contenders, which included a German Shepherd, a Great Dane, a Dalmatian, a Shih Tzu, a Chesapeake Bay Retriever, and an Azawakh.
