2024 Olympics: How Team USA's Stars Prepare for Competition

I’ve had the privilege of reporting on some truly inspiring and accomplished individuals who are representing our country at the Olympics this year. Each one of them has a unique story to tell, and it’s been an honor to be part of sharing their journeys with the world.

For the upcoming 2024 Olympics in Paris, athletes have spent their entire lives preparing for this very moment. Approximately 24 hours remain before they embark on their journey to compete.

To show your genuine enthusiasm as a supporter of Team USA with red, white, and blue spirit, trivia knowledge, and patriotic fervor, make sure you are fully focused on the games.

We’re not just talking about recognizing Katie Grimes from Katie Ledecky, as the latter, who finished fourth in the 800-meter freestyle at the 2020 Olympics, had posters of the Olympic gold medalist swimming sensation adorning her bedroom walls during her childhood. Or being familiar with the gymnast who was starstruck upon meeting future teammate Simone Biles.

As a devoted fan, I can tell you that encountering the undisputed queen of sports is an experience shared by many. But for me, that chance meeting transformed into something more significant. I found myself welcomed into the seven-time medalist’s Texas gym and even became an alternate on the U.S. women’s gymnastics team.

To make your Olympic watch party even more exciting, we’ve had conversations, video calls, and in-person meetings with athletes you admire. Instead of just focusing on their competition stats, we delved deeper. We discovered what songs they listen to before competing for the gold medal, their favorite TV shows they can’t get enough of, and the essential items they’ve already packed for Paris.

You know, the important things in life.

As Suni Lee, Gabby Thomas, and Tara Davis-Woodhall prepare their uniforms and take a dip in the ice baths before the July 26 Opening Ceremony, now is your chance to become an expert Olympics fan with TopMob News’ comprehensive guide. Get ready for an unforgettable experience!

After her triumphant performance in Tokyo three years ago at the age of 18, Suni Lee, now 21 and a student at Auburn University, is preparing to defend her all-around title at the Paris Olympics. Despite having faced a serious kidney illness since then, Suni remains determined and optimistic. In an interview with TopMob News in December, she expressed, “I’m just aiming to make it there. If I can manage that with everything that’s happening, it will be just as rewarding as winning a gold medal.”

Her Get-Pumped Playlist: “Right now I’ve been listening to [SZA‘s] ‘Saturn.’ It just came out and it’s been on repeat. But her last album was amazing. I saw her in concert and I was crying.”

After completing a task or an event, I reach out to my manager and doctor. These two individuals hold significant places in my life. I rely on them heavily and trust their judgement wholeheartedly. They have been constant presences through thick and thin, providing support during both good and challenging days. Their acceptance of me, regardless of my performance or condition, is something I deeply appreciate.

If She Could Medal In Something Other Than Gymnastics: “Napping? Shopping? I’m good at that.”

After securing a bronze medal in the 200m event and a silver medal as part of the 4x100m relay team at the 2020 Olympics, Gabby Thomas, the 27-year-old Harvard graduate who also volunteers at the healthcare clinic in Austin, is thrilled to relive the experience with her loved ones by her side. She shared her excitement with TopMob News, stating, “I’m eager to have my friends and family present for this journey, as well as my team and all those who contributed to my success.”

As someone who grew up listening to hip hop music, I can’t help but be excited about the energy and creativity that comes from the new generation of artists. Her Get-Pumped Playlist perfectly encapsulates this vibe with its selection of tracks from GloRilla, 21 Savage, and Future.

Current Binge: “My go-to is Friends.”

As an obsessed fan, I’d express it this way: “If only she could compete and medal in something beyond track and field, I’d love to see her try out cooking in the kitchen. The creativity and passion that goes into making a delicious meal is just as thrilling as watching her race!”

In her childhood home in Las Vegas, Katie Grimes adorned her bedroom with posters of accomplished swimmer Katie Ledecky. So when the 10-time Olympic medalist identified the 18-year-old as a promising figure in swimming, Grimes shared with TopMob News that this was an unexpected and thrilling experience. “It was quite astonishing,” she expressed, adding, “I didn’t really grasp it at first, but it was definitely an honor.” (Placed 4th in the 800-meter freestyle at Tokyo Olympics)

I absolutely adore discovering new music and sharing it with others, and lately, I’ve been thoroughly enjoying Dua Lipa’s latest album, “Radical Optimism.” Having grown up listening to her music, I can confidently say that this album truly encapsulates the essence of summertime. With its upbeat rhythms and catchy tunes, it’s the perfect soundtrack for those long, sunny days. Moreover, given the current state of the world, we could all use a healthy dose of optimism. Dua Lipa’s music has always been empowering and uplifting, and this new album is no exception. I can’t get enough of it!

If she had the ability to win medals in anything other than swimming: “In my dreams, I’d hold world records for that. Or perhaps I excel most in doing nothing at all.”

As a seasoned traveler who has spent countless nights in unfamiliar hotel rooms, I can relate to the young woman’s attachment to her beloved stuffed bear, Wilson. Although it may seem silly to some that this small toy holds such significance, the power of comforting objects is not lost on me.

Sixteen-year-old Hezly Rivera, a fresh addition to the gymnastics team, is the youngest American athlete set to compete in the Paris Olympics. She secured her place by outperforming her former inspiration Simone Biles and Lee on the beam during qualifiers. Excited about learning from her idols and experienced teammates Jade Carey and Jordan Chiles, Hezly shared with TopMob News, “They’re fantastic role models for me, and I can’t wait to benefit from their wisdom and guidance.”

“My energizing playlist doesn’t have a particular tune, but I often turn to worship songs. I particularly enjoy the music of Katy Nichole, whose tunes are both soothing and inspiring for me, striking a balance between tranquility and excitement.”

After a competition, I enjoy spending time with my family and sharing a meal together. It’s relaxing for me to catch up on their news and tell them about my experiences. They are always eager to listen.

During our time in Paris, I’m eagerly looking forward to laying my eyes on the iconic Eiffel Tower. This is something I’ve longed to experience for a very long time.

In Tokyo, long jumper Tara Davis-Woodhall, 25, came close but didn’t make it to the podium. She’s looking forward to giving her best in Paris for the Olympics. As she shared with TopMob News, “Winning an Olympic gold medal is what most athletes aim for. With our new approach this year and the significance we attach to our training rather than just meets, this experience in Paris will be incredibly meaningful for my husband Hunter Davis and me.”

Pre-Workout Fuel: “Definitely Celsius with a Chomp, a nice beef jerky steak.”

Based on my personal experience and observation, I strongly believe that music plays a significant role in shaping one’s mood and energy levels. The playlist of an individual can be a reflection of their current state of mind or even a window into their personality.

Current Binge:Resident Alien and the Tom Brady roast. That thing is crazy.”

In Tokyo, Hunter, a native of Utah and a Paralympian who had both his legs amputated as a baby due to fibular hemimelia, expressed his confidence to TopMob News in May, saying, “I was hopeful that I would win the gold medal.” However, he ended up earning a bronze medal in the 400m T62 event. With a total of three Paralympic medals now under his belt, the 25-year-old is more determined than ever. “This year,” he shared, “I truly believe I have what it takes to win the gold. I am confident that I can be the best.”

His Get-Pumped Playlist: “Right now mine is ‘Levels’ by BigX.”

As an obsessed fan of my morning routine: “I’m not a big fan of eating a lot before running. That’s why Celsius is perfect for me. Every sunrise, I kickstart my day with a glass of water infused with a quarter teaspoon of salt, a squeeze of lime or lemon juice, and some essential amino acids.”

After a rigorous workout session, we truly savor: Beef jerky sticks are on fire. A platter of sweet potatoes and ground beef is simply explosive. Oh man, the feasts we have after practice are the best part. We sure do consume quite a bit.

For heptathlete Chari Hawkins, the third attempt was successful: she came in second place at the U.S. Olympic Trials in June, following two previous disappointing results with 15th and 6th place finishes. Since then, the 33-year-old native of Idaho has been unable to hold back her tears. “Being an Olympian is just amazing!” she shared with reporters.

As a former athlete who has gone through the grueling process of trying out for the Olympics, I can attest to the intense emotional rollercoaster that comes with it. The road to making the team is fraught with stress, anxiety, and even tears. In America, where there are countless talented athletes vying for a limited number of spots, the competition is fierce and the pressure is immense.

At the Olympic trials, with numerous talented contenders, we must reach our top form for that crucial moment. Currently, we’re in excellent condition, prepared to perform. Our goal now is to fine-tune our skills and present our best selves in Paris.

“During my childhood trip to Paris, I recalled having a conversation with my mom about her disapproval of tattoos. I made an unexpected promise to her that if I ever made it to the Olympics, I would let her buy me the Olympic rings tattoo as a token of achievement.”

After growing up as a gymnast and feeling unfulfilled in her corporate job, Sunny Choi made a surprising transition. Now the leading B-girl in the US, the 35-year-old New Yorker became the first American woman to qualify for Olympic breakdancing competition. Reflecting on TopMob News, she shared, “I had assumed that my gymnastics career was over and thought ‘That dream is finished.’ But life seemed to be urging me to explore new possibilities with the unexpected opportunity to try something entirely different.”

“I hope everyone comes to experience the joy. Breaking will be quite lively: there’s upbeat music playing, an MC engaging the crowd, a DJ setting the mood, and dancing all around. So what’s not to appreciate?”

After my workout session, I treat myself to delightful eats. It’s not just about eating nutritious foods, but also preparing and savoring new creations, such as a scrumptious custard freeze, as a soothing reward in the evening when I’m exhausted.

I’ve been fortunate enough to have attended the Olympics a few times throughout my life, and each time I step foot into the Olympic Village, I’m instantly filled with a sense of excitement and wonder. The energy is palpable, and it’s not just from the competition – it’s the people.

Thirty-four-year-old Miles Evans, a beach volleyball player from the U.S., secured a place on the national team together with Chase Budinger, a former NBA basketball small forward. Their combined ranking in the world is 13th. In an interview with TopMob News, Evans shared his emotional journey, expressing, “It’s been quite the rollercoaster ride, but incredibly exhilarating! Reaching the Olympics has long been my dream. I can hardly wait to share this wonderful news with my parents.”

” could be: “I’d find break dancing fascinating to learn, as I enjoy dancing, even though my skills are limited.”

“The genre I’m particularly fond of is EDM and house music, which I frequently play. FISHER is among my preferred artists, and I often tune in to his tunes beforehand to put me in a cheerful and upbeat frame of mind.”

As an obsessed fan, I join my teammates in our pre-match huddle. We take deep breaths together and focus our minds on the task at hand. We visualize success, pushing aside any fears or distractions that might hold us back. Together, we leave behind the pressures of the game and prepare ourselves for victory.

Despite having a broken ankle, skateboarder Jagger Eaton placed third in the inaugural Olympic men’s street competition at the 2020 Games. He may be aiming for gold next time, but as he shared with TopMob News, “The actual medals aren’t what’s important to me. It’s the experience and the journey that truly count—even if it seems clichéd for me to say so.”

“Recently, my go-to playlist has been heavily influenced by the legendary Tupac Shakur. Previously, my music collection was diverse, featuring old country tunes, fresh rap beats, and various genres in between.”

Favorite Star Encounter: At the Kids’ Choice Sports Awards, Kobe Bryant approached me with a warm handshake. He expressed appreciation for my Nickelodeon show, Jagger Eaton’s Mega Life, stating that his daughters were big fans. He encouraged me to continue spreading positivity and I was deeply touched by his kind words. This heartfelt interaction took place immediately following his gold slime shower – an unforgettable moment as I found myself covered in the goo alongside him!

Book of Choice:Eckhart Tolle—he’s a huge author that I’ve really gravitated toward. I’ve only read The Power of Now, but I’ve read it five times and I have notes in my book that I go back to almost every day when I practice. Just things that create presence and happiness and enthusiasm toward what I’ve done and also what I continue to do my whole life.”
