2024 Olympics: Jordan Chiles Details Winning Bronze Medal After Appeal

As a seasoned athlete and swim enthusiast who has participated in numerous competitions, I can empathize with both Luke Greenbank and Alex Walsh. The heartbreak of giving it your all, only to be disqualified due to technicalities that seem minute yet make all the difference, is a bitter pill to swallow.

Jordan Chiles is reflecting on her biggest achievement yet.

Following the gymnast (who was a part of Team USA alongside Simone Biles, Jade Carey, Suni Lee, and Hezly Rivera) earning her first individual medal by taking bronze in her floor routine, she expressed her thoughts on coach Cecile Landi’s decision to challenge her initial fifth place score.

In that particular instance, Jordan shared, he experienced a whirlwind of feelings. The events unfolding – from missing the podium initially to standing on it later – were profound. However, the most crucial lesson he learned was never to question one’s self-worth and let things unfold as they should naturally.

As Jordan observed a replay of her response to discovering she had won bronze, alongside Simone and Cecile, interviewed by Hoda Kotb and Savannah Guthrie, the 23-year-old couldn’t help but express her heartfelt feelings about her relationships with Simone and Cecile.

Jordan emphasized, “Everyone was weeping, and those were genuine feelings.” He continued, “It’s all about having a strong support network. Simone plays the role of an older sister to me, while Cecile is like another mother. Simone has done so much for me, and in that moment, I truly understood this.”

On August 5th, Jordan’s surprising medal win sparked curiosity as she stepped onto the podium in place of Ana Barbosu from Romania. In this competition, Simone Biles won silver and Rebeca Andrade from Brazil claimed gold.

After Cecile’s query about the initial underestimation of a jump’s difficulty, UCLA student’s score increased significantly. This move propelled her above Ana, who was previously in third place, by a margin of 0.66 points. Although some viewers found this decision contentious, both Jordan and her coach maintain their support for the reevaluation of her initial ranking.

To clarify any misunderstanding regarding the scoring controversy, the coach indeed addressed the fan’s claim that Cecile was cheating on Instagram.

“Cecile posted on Instagram August 6th that Jordan’s top score on floor exercise is a 5.9, but during qualifiers and team final, she only scored a 5.8 because not all elements were fully executed. During the finals, Cecile believed Jordan performed better, so with nothing to lose, an inquiry was sent. Surprisingly, the inquiry was accepted.”

In a sympathetic tone towards Ana’s situation, Cecile clarified, “Jordan earned his bronze medal fairly, not taking it away from anyone.”

British commentator Bob Ballard was withdrawn from the Eurostar Olympics coverage following widespread criticism for making a remark considered sexist. After Australian swimmers Mollie O’Callaghan, Shayna Jack, Emma McKeon, and Meg Harris won gold in the 4×100-meter freestyle relay, Ballard said, “The women are wrapping things up now.” He continued, “You know what women do…fixing their makeup.” His co-commentator Lizzie Simmonds responded, “Bob, that’s outrageous. Some men also engage in those activities.” Eurostar called his comment “inappropriate” and removed Ballard from further coverage with immediate effect. The veteran sportscaster subsequently apologized for any offense caused.

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but express my viewpoint: It’s all hogwash, the talk about the shallow pool inside La Defense Arena being the culprit behind the seemingly sluggish swimming times. Team USA’s very own Regan Smith, who swept Paris with an impressive haul of five medals, debunked this theory when speaking to NBCOlympics.com following their world-record-setting performance in the women’s 4×100-meter medley alongside Gretchen Walsh, Lilly King, and Torri Huske.

Brazilian swimmer Ana Carolina Vieira was dismissed from the Olympics by the Brazilian Olympic Committee due to two instances of misconduct. The first was leaving the Olympic Village with her boyfriend and teammate Gabriel Santos without prior approval, which reportedly occurred after she responded disrespectfully and aggressively to a decision made by the Brazilian Swimming Team committee concerning the 4x100m freestyle relay. In a video entitled “How a Communication Mishap Shattered My Olympic Dream,” Vieira expressed her regret over the situation but remained hopeful, stating that everything would be resolved in due time.

The Paraguayan Olympic Committee requested swimmer Luana Alonso to withdraw from the Games, stating in a release that she had fostered an unsuitable environment within the Paraguay Team. In their statement, they acknowledged that her departure was voluntary as she chose not to stay at the Athletes’ Village. However, it appeared that Southern Methodist University student Luana Alonso had already returned to Texas when she clarified on Instagram Story (translated from Spanish) on August 5th, “I just wanted to make it clear that I was never forced out or expelled from anywhere; please stop spreading misinformation. I won’t issue a statement, but I won’t let falsehoods impact me either.”

Simone Biles and MyKayla Skinner, Tokyo teammates, had previously expressed differing opinions about the U.S. gymnastics team selected for Paris, with Skinner apologizing for her initial criticism that suggested the current team lacked talent and work ethic. However, after the 2024 team won gold, Biles posted a comment on a photo of the athletes that seemed to reference Skinner’s original statement.

As a long-time gymnastics enthusiast and follower of the sport’s biggest stars like Simone Biles and Suni Lee, I found the recent event in Paris particularly intriguing. The fact that neither of these exceptional athletes failed to medal on the beam this year was quite surprising, given their impressive track records. Their falls off the apparatus during their final routines were undoubtedly disappointing, but it’s essential to remember that even the best gymnasts have off days.

Initially, Jordan Chiles appeared to miss out on a medal as she scored 13.666 in her floor exercise final routine, placing her behind Romania’s Ana Barbosu who stood in third place with a score of 13.700. However, following an inquiry by Team USA regarding Chiles’ score, the judges reassessed her performance and boosted her start value by 0.1 points. This adjustment increased her final score to 13.766, earning her the bronze medal. Barbosu, who had already begun celebrating with Romania’s flag, was left in tears due to this change. After the event, Barbosu shared a video of her performance and expressed gratitude to everyone who supported her before, during, and after the competition.
