As someone who has spent years immersed in the world of cinema and entertainment, I must say that this year’s Golden Globe nominations have left me both intrigued and somewhat puzzled. On one hand, it’s heartening to see fresh faces like Zendaya, Gabriel LaBelle, and Saoirse Ronan being recognized for their exceptional work. On the other hand, I can’t help but feel a twinge of disappointment when I see deserving actors like Ryan Reynolds or Emma Stone being overlooked.
The 2025 Golden Globe Awards are slowly but surely raising its curtains.
To put it simply, Mindy Kaling and Morris Chestnut declared the nominees on December 9, with The Bear, Abbott Elementary, and Wicked being among the anticipated choices. Emilia Pérez received the most nominations, totaling 10, including Best Motion Picture—Musical or Comedy, and Selena Gomez was nominated for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture—Musical or Comedy.
2021 was an auspicious year for actors such as Hiroyuki Sanada and Cooper Koch. Sanada clinched his first Golden Globes nomination in the Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Series – Drama category for his work in “Shogun,” which came hot on the heels of his first Emmy wins – Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series – for the same role. Meanwhile, Koch demonstrated his worth in gold by bagging his first win, Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Limited Series, Anthology Series, or a Motion Picture Made for Television, for “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story.
Simultaneously, “The Bear” amassed five nominations. These categories were Best Television Series (in the domain of Music or Comedy), Best Performance by Male Actor (Jeremy Allen White) in a Television Series (of the Musical or Comedy genre), and Best Performance by Female Actor (Ayo Edebiri) in a Television Series (also under the Musical or Comedy umbrella). Interestingly, “Only Murders in the Building” and “Shogun” both received four nominations each.
Some projects had been expected to make the cut, while others turned out to be unexpected surprises. For example, even though Squid Game won Best Television Series – Drama for its second season, we won’t see its release until December 26th.
After the 2022 Golden Globes, which weren’t broadcasted due to long-standing issues and a lack of diversity within the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the organization pledged to be more inclusive in the future. However, the association was disbanded and rebranded as the Golden Globe Foundation in 2023, a move that seems to have been effective since the voting body has noticeably diversified, almost tripling in size.
To find out who will win the golden statuette at the Golden Globes, make sure to tune in live from the Grand Ballroom of the Beverly Hilton Hotel in California on Sunday, January 5th at 5 p.m. PT/8 p.m. ET on CBS or stream it on Paramount+.
