2025 Golden Globes: Which Comic Book Movies and TV Shows Are Nominated (And Which Ones Aren’t)

2024 turned out to be a less-than-stellar year for superhero films at the box office. Among the few exceptions was Marvel’s Deadpool & Wolverine, which managed to become the highest-grossing R-rated movie ever, globally. However, most comic book adaptations fell flat, with Joker: Folie à Deux, The Crow, Madame Web, and Kraven the Hunter failing to impress at the box office. The low-budget film Hellboy: The Crooked Man was even bypassed by theaters entirely. And unfortunately, Venom: The Last Dance, the last installment of the Tom Hardy trilogy, didn’t quite live up to expectations, underperforming at the box office.

Television adaptations of comic books saw greater success, as series like “The Penguin” spin-off from “The Batman” and “Agatha All Along”, a spinoff from “WandaVision”, both received acting nominations at the 2025 Golden Globes.

In this year’s 82nd Golden Globe Awards, honoring excellence in cinema and television, just three comic book adaptations gained recognition across five distinct categories, amassing a total of five nominations.

Cinematic and Box Office Achievement Nominees

As a cinephile, I’d rephrase the list in a first-person perspective as follows:

* In the vastness of space, I found myself engrossed by Alien: Romulus, an enthralling tale that kept me on the edge of my seat.
* Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice again! This time around, it was a delightful journey back to the whimsical world of the undead.
* Deadpool and Wolverine, two of Marvel’s most formidable heroes, shared the screen in an action-packed adventure that left me cheering for more.
* Gladiator II transported me back to the grandeur of ancient Rome, where I witnessed a sequel that lived up to its predecessor’s legacy.
* Inside Out 2 took me on another emotional rollercoaster ride through the complexities of human emotions, offering a heartwarming exploration of our inner lives.
* Twisters promised a thrilling ride through the skies, as I held my breath and marveled at the breathtaking visuals and nail-biting action sequences.
* Wicked brought me back to the magical land of Oz, where I was enchanted by the untold story of the witches that ruled the realm with an iron fist.
* The Wild Robot, a captivating tale of a robot’s quest for survival in a harsh and unforgiving world, left me pondering about the nature of life and the meaning of existence itself.

Actresses such as Cate Blanchett (Disclaimer), Jodie Foster (True Detective: Night Country), Cristin Milioti (The Penguin), Sofía Vergara (Griselda), Naomi Watts (Feud: Capote vs. The Swans), and Kate Winslet (The Regime) are involved in various upcoming projects.

5 Golden Globe nominations across three different projects in the genre this year is the most since 2020, when the box office hit “Joker” received four nominations, taking home two: Best Actor in a Drama Movie for Joaquin Phoenix and Best Original Score for composer Hildur Guðnadóttir. Notably, “Joker”, an R-rated DC film, also garnered recognition in the categories of Best Drama Movie and Best Director (Motion Picture) for Todd Phillips.

2021’s ceremony saw no nominations from that specific genre. However, Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany, stars of “WandaVision,” were recognized in the Best Performance by an Actress/Actor in a Limited Series or Motion Picture categories for 2022. In contrast, Angela Bassett was the sole nominee in 2023, triumphing with the Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture, which she earned for her role in Marvel Studios’ “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.”

2024 saw a Golden Globe ceremony where Christopher Nolan’s film “Oppenheimer” and the television series “Succession,” each garnering five and four wins respectively, along with “The Bear” and “Beef”, both earning three awards, dominated the night. However, the comic book genre went home empty-handed. In a surprising turn of events, the inaugural Golden Globe for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement was given to 2023’s “Barbie”. This film beat out fellow nominees “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” and “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3”. Interestingly, “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” also received nominations for Best Original Score and Best Animated Motion Picture, but lost in the latter category to Hayao Miyazaki’s film “The Boy and the Heron”.

2018’s “Black Panther” remains the sole superhero movie that was nominated for a Golden Globe in the Best Motion Picture – Drama category, which eventually went to the Queen biopic “Bohemian Rhapsody” at the 2019 ceremony. In contrast, “The Dark Knight” from 2008 is the only comic book film to win a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor, with this honor being bestowed posthumously on Heath Ledger for his portrayal of the Joker. The role of the Joker also earned Joaquin Phoenix a Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama Golden Globe in 2020, making “Joker” from 2019 the only comic book-based film to receive this award.

In relation to our involvement, the 2024 Golden Issue Awards from egmr.ru – an annual event honoring excellence in film, television, comics, and beyond – saw ComicBook staff awarding “The Penguin” as the Top TV Series in the Comic Book category and “X-Men ’97” as the Best Animated Series of the year.

In addition, “The Penguin” garnered numerous accolades, with Colin Farrell’s Oz Cobb and Cristin Milioti’s Sofia Falcone being honored, Aubrey Plaza’s Rio Vidal/Death earning the title of Best TV Scene-Stealer (Agatha All Along) and Channing Tatum’s Gambit named as the Best Scene-Stealer in Film (Deadpool & Wolverine). Notably, Channing Tatum’s performance was also chosen by ComicBook as the Best Comic Book Movie of 2024.

Projects that fulfilled the eligibility and selection criteria, airing between January 1st to December 31st, 2024, but didn’t receive any nominations include Marvel Animation’s X-Men ’97, Marvel TV’s Echo, Netflix’s Dead Boy Detectives, DC Studios’ Creature Commandos, the final seasons of TNT’s Snowpiercer (based on the French graphic novel Le Transperceneige), and The CW’s Superman & Lois.

The 82nd Golden Globes air Sunday, Jan. 5, on CBS.
