2025 Horror Movie Sequel Officially Delayed an Entire Year

The popular “Insidious” series is set to return a bit later than anticipated, with “Insidious 6” now scheduled for release in 2026 instead of 2025. This delay was confirmed by Variety, as Sony Pictures has moved the film’s initial release date (August 29, 2025) to accommodate Darren Aronofsky’s “Caught Stealing”. As a result, “Insidious 6” will now hit theaters on August 21, 2026. No specific reason has been disclosed for this shift in release date, but it could be due to additional time required for scripting, pre-production, and main filming.

It’s uncertain if “Insidious 6” has been prepared for filming as of now, making it challenging for the cast and crew to meet the 2025 release deadline. Given this situation, the postponement of “Insidious 6” is quite reasonable. Moreover, the possible cause for the one-year delay in “Insidious 6” might be connected to who will take charge as the director for the next installment of the “Insidious” series.

James Wan, renowned horror director, directed the first two ‘Insidious’ movies, which were released in 2011 and 2013 respectively. Leigh Whannell, who collaborated with Wan on writing the ‘Insidious’ films, made his directorial debut with ‘Insidius: Chapter 3’, released in 2015. Adam Robitel then took over for ‘Insidious: The Last Key’ in 2018. Patrick Wilson is set to make his directorial debut with ‘Insidious: The Red Door’, scheduled for release in 2023. It’s unclear if Whannell, Robitel, or Wilson will return for the next installment of the series, or whether a new director will be brought in. This uncertainty might explain why we haven’t seen ‘Insidious 6’ yet.

The “Insidious” series kicked off with a 2011 movie centered around the Lambert family, who started encountering chilling hauntings from an unidentified demonic entity (commonly referred to as the “Lipstick-Face Demon” within the franchise’s folklore). With the assistance of demonologist Elise Rainier (played by Lin Shaye), Josh Lambert (Patrick Wilson) manages to save his son Dalton (Ty Simpkins) after he is abducted and transported to a supernatural dimension called “The Further.” After the initial success of “Insidious,” the series further expanded its supernatural universe in subsequent installments.

The sequels, “Insidious 2” and “Insidious: The Red Door,” continue the tale of the Lambert family. In “Insidious 2”, Josh manages to conquer his demonic possession as established in the original “Insidious”, saving his family yet again. “Insidious: The Red Door” brings Josh and the now-adult Dalton together, with Josh needing to save Dalton from The Further one more time. On the other hand, “Insidious 3” and “Insidious: The Last Key” delve into Elise’s expertise in demonology as she tackles various paranormal cases with her colleagues Specs (Leigh Whannell) and Tucker (Angus Sampson).

It’s unclear yet where in the Insidious series timeline Insidious 6 is planned, but given the complex, non-linear structure of the franchise, there are many possibilities for its direction. The appeal of characters like Elise Rainier, Specs, and Tucker indicates a vast array of supernatural tales that the Insidious universe can explore. This flexibility in storytelling makes finalizing the plot and script for Insidious 6 crucial, which might have played a part in its delay. Although pushing back Insidious 6 to 2026 may be disappointing, it should give the sequel ample time for thorough preparation, ensuring it lives up to the standards of such a well-established and beloved horror movie series.
