The release of “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” marks the commencement of the 2025 summer movie season in cinemas. This period is undeniably the most exciting for both movie theaters and studios, as many of the year’s biggest films are set to premiere on the big screen over the next three months. With Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day being popular movie-watching weekends, summer is traditionally the optimal time for going to the movies. The summer season began with “MI:8” and the live-action adaptation of “Lilo & Stitch” this Memorial Day Weekend, followed by “Jurassic World Rebirth” on July 4th weekend, and the fourth installment of the successful horror series, “The Conjuring: Last Rites,” on Labor Day. In addition to these major holiday weekends, there are several highly anticipated films to look forward to, such as “28 Years Later,” “Together,” and “Fantastic Four: First Steps.
This year has seen an impressive lineup of films so far, including Ryan Coogler’s masterwork, Sinners. Granted, the beginning of the year was a bit sluggish with some lesser-known treasures emerging. Nevertheless, the box office performance for the first half of the year has been quite robust. Some of these films were anticipated to be successful, but surpassed predictions, while others flew under the radar and still managed to perform exceptionally well.
2025 has turned out to be an intriguing year for cinema, and here are some unexpected blockbusters that have dominated the box office thus far.

‘A Minecraft Movie’
Given the immense popularity of the top-selling video game, it was only natural that its dedicated fanbase would flock to the cinema for this film. The setting is a dynamic, three-dimensional pixelated universe where players construct machines, landscapes, and buildings. The plot revolves around four outcasts who are inexplicably drawn through a portal into an extraordinary cubic realm. To return home, they must learn the secrets of this world while embarking on a mission with a skilled craftsman as their guide.
As a movie critic, I was eagerly anticipating the release of “A Minecraft Movie,” given Warner Bros.’ stellar reputation and the massive fan base for this beloved video game. The initial box office predictions ranged from $70-80 million for its opening weekend, with some optimistic whispers suggesting it could even reach $90 million due to the palpable excitement leading up to its release.
However, when the dust settled on its first weekend, I was left utterly astounded. This digital adventure not only met but surpassed expectations by grossing an incredible $162.7 million domestically! As the weeks unfolded, it continued to captivate audiences, ultimately earning a staggering $421.4 million during its run in U.S. and Canadian theaters. This phenomenal success has catapulted “A Minecraft Movie” to the top spot as the highest-grossing film of the year so far in North America.

‘Companion’
Under the guidance of two rising talents in horror, Jack Quaid and Sophie Thatcher, “Companion” offers a chilling blend of thriller, horror, and dark humor. The story unfolds as Iris (Thatcher) joins her boyfriend Josh (Quaid) and his friends at a secluded billionaire’s cabin for a weekend getaway. However, the discovery of the billionaire’s dead body triggers a series of events that gradually uncover one of them is not who they appear to be.
Generally speaking, January is often considered the least profitable month for new movie releases due to the lull after summer blockbusters and the holiday seasons. Studios tend to release movies they’re less certain about during this period, saving their potential moneymakers or awards contenders for later in the year. However, the film ‘Companion’ demonstrated that January isn’t necessarily a graveyard for poorly received films. It boasts an intriguing concept and enough unexpected twists to keep viewers engaged, even though its marketing may have revealed one of the main plot twists prematurely. The on-screen chemistry between Thatcher and Quaid was particularly noteworthy. ‘Companion’ managed to earn $20.8 million domestically against a budget of just $10 million and a 19-day theatrical run, which is impressive for a smaller film not based on any existing intellectual property and released in January. In essence, ‘Companion’ was an unexpected success story for a movie released during this traditionally quiet period.

‘Lilo & Stitch’
The upcoming film titled Lilo & Stitch is a modern adaptation of the cherished 2002 animated movie that received an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Feature. This classic animation was nominated at the 2003 Oscars and is considered one of Disney’s finest creations following their successful ’90s era. The live-action reboot maintains the original storyline but introduces several significant alterations to the source material.
The newly released film has earned an impressive $183 million in its domestic debut, competing with Tom Cruise in “MI:8”. It significantly outperformed predictions and set a new record for the highest-grossing Memorial Day weekend opening ever, surpassing the previous title holder, “Top Gun: Maverick”, another Tom Cruise film. Despite frequent criticism of Disney’s live-action remakes, they often prove to be financially successful. Therefore, it’s not unexpected that it’s making a substantial amount of money, but what is surprising is its success in dethroning “Top Gun” and outperforming one of the most eagerly awaited films this year.

‘Captain America: Brave New World’
In this fresh take on the Captain America saga titled “Captain America: A New World,” we delve into its fourth installment within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This time, Anthony Mackie’s character Sam Wilson steps up as the new Captain America. The story unfolds as President Thaddeus Ross (portrayed by Harrison Ford) calls upon Sam to the White House for talks on rebuilding the Avengers. Not long after, Sam becomes embroiled in a global predicament where he must track down the mastermind behind a sinister worldwide conspiracy.
Mackie consistently embodies Sam Wilson with an endearing charisma, making Captain America’s mantle seem fitting for his character. He doesn’t aim to replace Steve Rogers, but rather enacts what he believes Captain America should do. Regrettably, a significant portion of the movie criticism isn’t focused on Mackie, but instead on the intricate plot that seems more like a sequel to The Incredible Hulk than a continuation of Captain America. Despite the unfavorable reviews and a Rotten Tomatoes score of 47%, the film managed to earn $200.5 million in box office revenue within the U.S. and Canada.

‘Thunderbolts*’
The ragtag Marvel Cinematic Universe team, now known as The New Avengers, has swiftly earned a spot among the top Marvel movies released since the debut of Avengers: Endgame more than six years ago. In this latest installment, titled Thunderbolts, Florence Pugh’s character Yelena Belova embarks on a journey to find meaning in her life and confronts the deep-seated loneliness and desolation she grapples with. Assigned a covert mission by CIA director Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, portrayed by Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Yelena is compelled to collaborate with a group of renegade assassins that Valentina has double-crossed, in order to safeguard her secrets from the U.S. government.
As the launch of the innovative marketing strategy for the upcoming movie drew nearer, anticipation for it grew stronger. The final trailer, highlighting the cast and crew who had collaborated with A24 in the past, gained considerable attention, suggesting that Marvel Studios had invested more consideration into this film compared to previous projects. Initial forecasts predicted an opening weekend revenue of $63-70 million, but Forbes reports it earned $76 million domestically, and currently stands at $174 million domestically. Although it might not match the earnings of pre-“Endgame” movies, its success is a delightful development for the post-“Endgame” era, hopefully signaling a more promising future for the MCU.
3
‘Dog Man’
Right now, DreamWorks’ animated film “Dog Man” is placed at the seventh spot on the 2025 domestic box office chart. The story revolves around a police officer and his police dog who get combined to form Dog Man. Their mission is to thwart Petey the Cat (portrayed by Pete Davidson), who aims to clone himself and produce an evil feline sidekick, effectively doubling his malicious power.
In its initial weekend in January, the film titled “Dog Man” was expected to earn between $25 and $30 million, but ended up making $35 million instead. It ran for 11 weeks in theaters with an average stay of approximately 6.7 weeks per venue. Ranking seventh on the domestic box office chart, this kids’ movie garnered a total of $97.9 million, which is impressive for a January release and particularly successful for an animated film not produced by Disney.
2
‘Final Destination Bloodlines’
The sixth edition of the well-liked yet harrowing horror series, Final Destination, was expected to pull in a good number of viewers. Released nearly a month after the 25th anniversary of the original film, Final Destination Bloodlines has proven to be a success. The newest film centers around Stefani (Kaitlyn Santa Juana), a college student who keeps having a recurring disturbing dream about her estranged grandmother dying tragically in a tower collapse from the late 1960s. Eager to understand what this dream means and how she can shield her family from the ghastly fate that awaits them, Stefani goes back home to seek help from the one person who might be able to assist her.
In a remarkable turn of events, the latest addition to the “Final Destination” film series produced by Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema is receiving exceptional praise, boasting a 92% rating from critics and an impressive 88% approval from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. This movie also set a new record for the franchise as it grossed a staggering $103.4 million worldwide during its opening weekend, significantly exceeding initial projections of $46 million domestically. Since its inception over two decades ago, the “Final Destination” series has been cherished by horror enthusiasts. The recent release has also attracted a new generation of fans since the last installment of the franchise 14 years prior. To date, it has garnered $94.1 million domestically and surpassed the global box office earnings of all other movies in the series.
1
‘Sinners’
Ryan Coogler’s extraordinary, poignant, socially relevant masterpiece, titled “Sinners“, has been an unexpected standout this year. It’s not just its impressive box office performance that makes it notable, but also the intricate storytelling that sets it apart. This captivating tale is entirely Coogler’s creation, and it unfolds in the 1930s, focusing on two twin brothers, Smoke and Stack, portrayed by Michael B. Jordan. Having left a trail of trouble behind them in Chicago, they return to their hometown in the Mississippi Delta, only to encounter something sinister lurking there.
The movie was captured using IMAX cameras and shown on 70mm IMAX film in selected cities, offering a stunning visual experience. One scene, specifically at the Smokestack brothers’ juke joint, is incredibly captivating. Director Ryan Coogler packed the film with intricate history and details, creating multiple layers to explore. Initially, Warner Bros., enjoying a successful year, anticipated the movie would earn around $40 million in its debut weekend. However, it surpassed expectations, grossing $48 million in North America during its first weekend and dethroning A Minecraft Movie. It also became the highest-grossing original film opening of the 2020s, the sixth horror movie to break $200 million in the U.S., and currently ranks as the seventh highest-grossing global box office film. By the end of 2025, Sinners had earned an impressive $258.8 million domestically, making it the second highest-grossing domestic film of that year.
