One distinctive concept in the horror genre is a slasher series where the antagonist is none other than Death itself. This setup essentially foreshadows the demise of most characters. Each film typically centers around a group of young individuals, and one member experiences a premonition of a catastrophe that claims their lives. Upon escaping this perilous situation, the disaster transpires, and because they defied the natural order by cheating death, Death pursues each member individually.
The “Final Destination” series encompasses multiple books and five films, with a sixth in production. Much like how to survive an ordinary slasher film has set guidelines, the “Final Destination” series follows strict rules regarding Death’s sequence of events. When someone manages to avoid Death’s initial touch, these rules are violated, prompting Death to exact its vengeance. Consequently, many main characters in the “Final Destination” films experience not one but two elaborate demises, some more striking or memorable than others.
Final Destination
In the movie Final Destination, Tod Waggner was Alex’s most intimate confidant. He was the first character to meet an untimely demise in the entire series. Remarkably, he perished not once but twice: in a premonition of the plane crash, he was hit by a falling radio and lost consciousness. Thankfully, he avoided witnessing all his friends being tragically killed.
Tod’s subsequent death played a pivotal role in advancing the plot of Final Destination. It served as the driving force behind the movie’s enigma and connected Alex to the other survivors. Since Tod was Alex’s closest friend, the protagonist found himself adrift without anyone else to confide in. This isolation compelled him to seek out Clear and the others.
In Tod’s version of Final Destination, the initial sequence is thrilling to behold. A leaking toilet, a shaving accident, and ominous appliances powering up – these elements mark the beginning of a long-lasting series, making their debut onscreen for the first time. However, the climactic death scene falls short compared to the franchise’s trademark goriness. The moment that catches viewers off guard is when Tod accidentally hangs himself on the shower’s clothesline after slipping and falling into the bathtub. Although the lead-up is well-executed, the lack of the usual gruesome detail leaves this scene near the bottom of the list.
Final Destination 3
Despite there being no official confirmation, it seems impossible that Kevin could have survived the incident he was involved in. Before his time comes, however, Kevin manages to get off the Devil’s Flight roller coaster just before it collapses. Kevin is quick to recognize the parallels between their situation and Flight 180, even going so far as to warn Wendy about what lies ahead. The two then work together to alert others, but a runaway truck comes dangerously close to ending their lives.
In a later grill blast, Kevin narrowly cheats death thanks to Wendy’s quick action. The same event also triggers a fireworks cart that knocks down Ian from the cherry picker. Surviving for six months following the Devil’s Flight incident, Kevin eventually encounters Julie and Wendy on the subway. Death seizes an opportunity to derail their train, as per Wendy’s second premonition, and it seems likely that Kevin will meet his end crushed between the tunnel and the train – although this doesn’t occur on screen, it appears to be a possible outcome as the movie concludes with a chilling sound of metal scraping against rock.

In the franchise I follow, an unexpected demise would often surprise us regular viewers. For example, some deaths are preceded by substantial character development and tension, but others are designed to startle us, appearing abruptly. The very first time I experienced that sudden shock was when Terry met his end in the initial film.
Terry is having a disagreement with the group over the fact that their lives should not solely be focused on the plane crash they survived. As she debates with them, she becomes angry and leaves, effectively ending things with her boyfriend, Carter, by saying, “I’m moving on, Carter. If you want to spend your time fighting Alex every chance you get… then I suggest you pass away.” In a tragic turn of events, Terry is struck by a bus, causing her blood to spatter onto the others.
Final Destination 5
After surviving the North Bay Bridge collapse thanks to Sam Lawton’s warning, Isaac Palmer attends the memorial service. However, as the movie unfolds, he is portrayed as an unlikable figure when it is later revealed that he pilfers items from his deceased coworker’s workspaces. This is where Isaac stumbles upon a coupon for a Chinese spa offering one free therapy session. Subsequently, upon arriving at the spa, he makes inappropriate advances towards the receptionist. As he steps into the massage room, Isaac touches a Buddha statue for good luck.
The massage turned out to be far more intense than Isaac anticipated, causing some of the table bolts to become loose. Then, a small fire started when a burning ember from the incense pot fell and made him quite uneasy. When he attempted to flee, he was unfortunately impaled by the acupuncture needles. Later on, an unexpected event transpired where the Buddha statue toppled right onto his head, shattering it into pieces. It seems that when Death has marked someone, there’s simply no escape from a tragic end, as demonstrated in Isaac’s grim tale.
Final Destination 3
In this series, it’s common for the characters’ upcoming deaths to be hinted at through certain signs. The death of character Perry, who survived the roller coaster accident, was unusually well-signaled in a single photo. As Wendy uncovers that the survivors are being targeted based on their seating arrangement, she queries about who sat next to Julie after Julie narrowly escaped death. When she warns that the person sitting next is next to die, Perry recognizes her own imminent danger and stands up. Unfortunately, she is then pierced by a flagpole, which eventually emerges grotesquely from her body after taking her life.
1. The flagpole that ultimately caused her demise was secured to a horse, which panicked due to fireworks. This sudden fright caused the animal to bolt, snapping the flagpole in two. A fragment of this broken pole ended up striking Perry.
2. In the movie, we see Perry standing with an American flag behind her and a merry-go-round nearby, which houses horses impaled on poles. This scene foreshadows Perry’s death, as she was later killed when a flagpole tied to a frightened horse (from the same merry-go-round) broke in half and struck her.
Final Destination
In the movie, Alex Browning isn’t the sole central character; instead, he forms a traumatic bond with his former tormentor, Carter Horton. Despite being one of the five predicted to die during Alex’s premonition, Carter manages to survive until the end of the film. In an attempt to circumvent death, Carter becomes reckless and speeds in his car while his friends plead for him to stop. Eventually, he parks on a railroad track and demands control over the timing of his demise. However, it seems that Carter’s time hadn’t come quite yet.
After the heart-wrenching ending of the film, Alex, Clear, and Carter head to Paris – their intended destination before Flight 180 disaster. By then, Carter no longer fears Death, even playfully mocking Alex about potentially being the next to perish. This prediction comes close to reality when a bus almost hits Alex, causing it to crash into a pole, bringing down a large sign in the process. Carter manages to rescue Alex, but the falling sign fatally injures him instead. Since his death occurred off-screen, Carter is ranked 20th on this list.
Final Destination 2
In the sequel movie, Rory is portrayed as a captivating figure, primarily defined by his constant use of drugs. Initially, he appears to be a flat character with a single dimension. However, as the story progresses, there’s more depth added to his character before his untimely demise. While being perpetually high keeps him oblivious to the grave danger they face, it also provides a comic relief that helps the other characters cope with their grim reality. In essence, Rory serves a dual purpose in the story – adding a layer of humor to the otherwise dark narrative and emphasizing the seriousness of their predicament by his lack of awareness.
As I lay on my deathbed, I found myself surprisingly serious about the state I’d leave behind. I begged my companions to conceal my stash of drugs, not wanting my mother to find me that way. But alas, moments later, I succumbed to one last temptation, only for a blast to send a wire fence slicing through me, splitting my body into three grotesque yet darkly comical pieces.
Final Destination 5
In the story, Sam stands out among other protagonists for his cool-headed and rational response to Death’s attempts on him and his colleagues’ lives. The script portrays him as a charming character who doesn’t realize his own attractiveness. This description perfectly encapsulates Sam’s essence – he’s a genuinely kind, humble individual who strives to save as many people as possible. Regrettably, the structure of this series prevents him from fulfilling that goal.
Initially, it appears that Sam has successfully delayed death by murdering Peter (who was responsible for Agent Block’s demise), and Peter believes he has gained Block’s longevity. However, what viewers think is the ending of the film turns out to be a twist – it’s actually a prequel! This means that Sam and his girlfriend Molly are destined to die together, just as they did in the first movie. The plane they’re on, which the survivors avoided in the original timeline, suffers an explosion in its left engine, resulting in a gruesome, fiery death for Sam.
Final Destination 3
Lewis Romero gets into a brawl instigated by Wendy’s prediction. When he teases her, Kevin retaliates against him, which eventually results in Lewis hitting Erin. As the fight escalates, they all get tossed off the Devil’s Flight. The movie portrays Lewis as indifferent, showing that he found Ashley and Ashlyn’s funeral tedious and a waste of his time. Lewis remains skeptical of Wendy, even after multiple warnings, and even goes as far as to ridicule Death itself.
Fans of the Final Destination series know all too well that neither praise nor curses can change Death’s inexorable course. In the case of Lewis, he shouts profanities at Death, declaring “Death, fk you!” just as a pair of swords hanging from a sign plunge down and sever the weightlifting machine’s wires. Miraculously, he lives to continue his diatribe against Death, but in the next instant, the weights on the machine are raised again, crushing his skull.
Final Destination 3
In the third movie, those who lived through the roller coaster disaster seemed fated to meet their end, but smartly they opted not to board the ill-fated ride. Instead, Death pursued them. Ian hypothesizes that if the last remaining person were killed first, Death would bypass the others. But when Death initially targeted Ian, Wendy intervened and saved him, causing Death to claim Erin, Ian’s girlfriend, instead.
In the story, it’s revealed that Ian develops intense animosity towards Wendy due to Erin’s demise, and he plots relentlessly to take her life. Wendy posits that if he abstains from killing her, the vicious cycle could be broken, but Ian remains indifferent, asserting his immortality since he was skipped. As fireworks burst overhead, they appear to strike him, yet he boasts about his invincibility…just before an explosion causes a sign to fall and fatally sever him in two, leaving viewers with one of the grisliest deaths ever depicted in the series.
