28 Days Later Confirmed to Stream At Home (And Very Soon)

As a die-hard fan of the zombie genre, I can’t contain my excitement over the digital release of the iconic masterpiece, “28 Days Later.” This movie not only breathed new life into the zombie film genre but also left an indelible mark on it. The fast-paced, heart-pounding action and the hauntingly realistic portrayal of a post-apocalyptic world have been etched in my mind since I first saw it way back when.

Fans of zombie movies no longer need to wait any longer to watch the famous sci-fi/horror film, “28 Days Later”. Sony Pictures confirmed that it will be available for rental and purchase on digital platforms starting Wednesday, December 18, 2024. This release timing couldn’t be more perfect as it comes right after Sony releases the trailer for the anticipated sequel of the film, “28 Years Later”. The news that the Cillian Murphy-starring film will finally be available in a digital format to rent or buy is exciting for fans, as it had been unavailable previously.

Despite being a groundbreaking zombie film that significantly impacted the genre for years, it’s surprising how elusive 28 Days Later can be – mostly through out-of-print DVDs. The scarcity stems from legal complications. Originally distributed by Searchlight Pictures in 2003, troubles arose concerning its rights when Disney bought 20th Century Fox (which owned Searchlight Pictures) in 2019. Fortunately, the film’s producer Andrew Macdonald had acquired the rights earlier this year and sold them to Sony. Recognizing fans’ desire to watch the movie, Sony has now granted an early Christmas gift by making it available.

28 Days Later‘s Legacy

Under the direction of Danny Boyle and script by Alex Garland, the movie titled “28 Days Later” delves into the aftermath of a devastating virus outbreak in Great Britain. This contagion spread due to animal rights activists unintentionally freeing an infected chimpanzee carrying the “rage virus.” Those who catch this virus exhibit aggressive, homicidal behavior, reducing much of the UK to ruins. A bike messenger named Jim, who was fortunately in a coma before the outbreak, awoke to find London post-apocalyptic. Now he’s on a mission to discover the truth and locate other potential survivors.

28 Days Later may not have been initially perceived as a zombie movie by its creator, but it significantly reshaped the genre with its innovative approach. Unlike George A. Romero’s Living Dead films where zombies were slow and terrifying, 28 Days Later introduced fast-moving horrors that added an extra layer of fear. Moreover, this film’s influence extended beyond the zombie genre and even filmmaking as a whole. 28 Days Later was filmed using early digital cameras, creating a realistic, almost documentary-like atmosphere, suggesting that the events depicted could have occurred in reality. Similarly, the upcoming 28 Years Later is expected to employ similar technology, having been shot on an iPhone.

Following the success of “28 Days Later,” a sequel titled “28 Weeks Later” was released in 2007. Now, the series is set to continue with “28 Days Later,” marking the beginning of a new trilogy. In production currently are “28 Years Later” and its immediate sequel, “28 Years Later Part II: The Bone Temple,” directed by Nia DaCosta, who is best known for her work on “Candyman.” At this point, details about the third film in the trilogy have yet to be revealed.

28 Years Later is set to be released on June 20, 2025.
