28 Years Later Sequel Already Has a Release Date

As a die-hard fan who has survived countless viewings of the original “28 Days Later”, I can’t contain my excitement for this upcoming trilogy! The wait has been agonizingly long, but the return of Alex Garland and Danny Boyle promises a rejuvenated and thrilling continuation of the franchise.

Anticipation for the return of “28 Days Later” is spreading rapidly, much like a contagion. On Thursday, Sony revealed that “28 Years Later Part II: The Bone Temple” will be released on January 16, 2026. This announcement follows closely on the heels of the unveiling of the trailer for “28 Years Later,” which is slated to hit cinemas on June 20, 2025.

Following almost twenty years of inactivity, the 28 Days Later series is gearing up for a significant return, with original author Alex Garland and director Danny Boyle at the helm. These two creators were merely producers on the 2007 sequel 28 Weeks Later, but they’re making amends now by planning a trilogy set to begin next summer. Previously, they had disclosed that they filmed the first two parts of the trilogy consecutively, so it’s not shocking that The Bone Temple already has a scheduled release date.

While this news is certainly thrilling, we won’t get many details about “The Bone Temple” until the release of “28 Years Later,” to keep spoilers at bay. Both films will see Cillian Murphy reprising his character from the original series, though the exact scope of his role remains unknown. The trailer for “28 Years Later” has sparked some fan theories suggesting that Murphy’s character Jimmy could be affected by a “rage virus,” but these are just speculations at this point.

Despite this, Murphy might still make appearances in the series as a zombie, given the series’ unique approach to its rage virus and the past instances of zombies being kept alive for study. The creators could be interested in pursuing the idea of a potential cure – a theme that is often abandoned early on in most zombie stories.

In the upcoming movie “28 Years Later,” it’s unclear exactly how significant Murphy might be, but the primary actors are Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, Ralph Fiennes, Jack O’Connell, Alfie Williams, Erin Kellyman, and Edvin Ryding. So far, only Taylor-Johnson and Murphy have been officially announced for the sequel. Interestingly, Taylor-Johnson himself revealed this information on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast when he stated: “we filmed one and two consecutively.

As a passionate fan of the zombie genre, I can attest to the fact that the resurgence of this comeback has proven its longevity – or perhaps it’s like a phoenix rising from its own grave! Regrettably, for those who wish to delve deeper into this fascinating discourse, they’ll need to dig a bit deeper into their pockets. Unfortunately, the original classic, 28 Days Later, is not included in any subscription-based streaming services, but it can be rented or bought on Prime Video. Fortunately, its sequel, 28 Weeks Later, is available to stream on Hulu. Mark your calendars, as 28 Years Later graces the big screen on June 20, 2025, followed by 28 Years Later Part II: The Bone Palace on January 16, 2026.
