In my perspective, I recently sat down with Empire Magazine alongside co-writer Alex Garland and producer Andrew Macdonald to delve into the upcoming chapter of our horror-thriller franchise, slated for release on June 20. During this interview for the magazine’s latest issue, we tackled a question that has been lingering among fans: whether the 2007 sequel to our original film, “28 Weeks Later,” remains part of the overall narrative since neither I nor Alex were involved with that production. Alex provided some insights about the connection between the films, stating that our new movie doesn’t contradict “28 Weeks Later,” but using the term ‘canon’ might not be a favorite of Danny Boyle’s vocabulary. I, in turn, emphasized that the storyline and the relationship between the movies are not as precisely structured as a scientific formula.
The first teaser for the movie “28 Years Later” was accompanied by the tagline, “Time has not mended anything,” indicating that the narrative would primarily concentrate on the UK, where the Rage Virus outbreak originated and where conditions have not improved. It appears that the filmmakers are more interested in exploring isolated regions, following individual characters and groups of people who are quarantined within these UK areas, rather than depicting a global apocalypse story. The ending of “28 Weeks Later,” where the Rage Virus-infected beings reached Paris, seems to not be reversed in “28 Years Later.” Instead, events happening outside of the UK are irrelevant to the storyline in “28 Years Later.” According to the movie’s summary, survivors in “28 Years Later” continue to live under a harsh and strictly enforced quarantine.
As I sat down with the creative minds behind “28 Years Later,” they opened up about the film’s intriguing origins. In their words, the plot was largely influenced by the tumultuous events surrounding Brexit and the world’s reactions to the UK’s unique circumstances.
Reflecting on the inspiration for this 2025 production, Director Garland explained, “Covid-19 wasn’t lingering in my thoughts because it was too fresh and immediate, but Brexit certainly was. The way I saw it, the world began to subtly shift its gaze from the UK – turning away, not really paying attention.”
Co-writer Macdonald added to this perspective, “The story of ’28 Years Later’ is one where nothing can enter or leave Britain; it’s as if the country has hit pause.
It was recently confirmed that Murphy won’t appear in the upcoming movie, but he is serving as executive producer for “28 Years Later”. Although he won’t be in the first film, McDonald told Empire that they want and he wants to be involved. McDonald added that there could potentially be a role for Jim in the future of the trilogy starting with “28 Years Later”, and he hopes to work with him in some capacity during the trilogy.
28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later are available to rent or buy on Prime Video.
