28 Years Later Trilogy Gets Surprising Update

As a die-hard fan of the original “28 Days Later”, I can barely contain my excitement as we are about to embark on another thrilling journey through a post-apocalyptic world. The news that not only is “28 Years Later” wrapping up production but there are plans for two more movies has me practically jumping out of my seat!

The second installment of a trilogy titled “28 Years Later,” as per producer Andrew Macdonald, is currently being produced. During a talk at the Edinburgh Film Festival, Macdonald shared that filming for “28 Years Later” has been completed, and there are plans to create additional two movies, all written by Alex Garland and produced by Danny Boyle. At the same event, Macdonald and Garland announced that not only is production on “28 Years Later” finished, but work on the subsequent films is already advancing even before the first film hits theaters.

McDonald shared that we are planning to produce an additional three films in the series, with the first one titled “28 Years Later“. Alex wrote this film, Danny directed it, and filming has already been completed. Starting tomorrow morning, we will begin work on part two. We anticipate a third part as well, making it a trilogy.

28 years after its original release, the upcoming movie titled simply “28 Years Later” has cast Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Ralph Fiennes in leading roles. At this time, the specifics regarding the film’s storyline remain undisclosed.

28 Days Later showcases the journey of Jim (Murphy), a bicycle messenger who regains consciousness after a coma, discovering a world ravaged by a virus that causes violent behavior in humans. The movie also features Naomie Harris, Christopher Eccleston, Megan Burns, and Brendan Gleeson. The film was widely acclaimed by both viewers and critics, being praised for rejuvenating the zombie horror genre, leading to an influx of similar movies.

More recently, Tom Rothman shared with Deadline that Danny Murphy will be back in an unexpected manner, one that builds upon his strengths. He further stated, “This is Danny at his finest, blended with a popular genre, similar to how we paired Edgar Wright and Baby Driver. Occasionally, when you pair a distinctive director with a commercial field, it takes it to new heights.”

28 Days Later had a follow-up in 2007 titled 28 Weeks Later. This sequel portrayed attempts to establish a secure area in London, disrupted when two siblings violated protocol in search of a family photo, thereby inadvertently reintroducing the Rage Virus to the protected zone. The cast included Rose Byrne, Jeremy Renner, Imogen Poots, Idris Elba, among others. It received generally favorable reviews but did not achieve the same level of success as its predecessor.

28 Years Later is set to open in theaters on June 20, 2025.
