2K is Getting Ready for a BioShock-Related Announcement “Fairly Soon” – Rumour

2K Games appears to be on the brink of unveiling a new development concerning the BioShock series. As reported by Mp1st, a specific timeline for this announcement remains undetermined. However, their source suggests that we might witness it within the summer season, using the term “fairly soon” to describe the time frame.

It’s important to mention that we don’t know exactly which part of the BioShock series will be the center of this upcoming announcement. Cloud Chamber Games has been developing a new mainline game within the franchise, but they haven’t shared much about their progress since last year. Additionally, there’s a BioShock movie in production by Netflix, and it could potentially be what 2K is planning to announce.

Based on Mp1st’s report, it appears that Rapture – the iconic city featured in both BioShock and BioShock 2 – will play a significant role in any upcoming announcements from 2K. This could potentially hint at the return of BioShock 4 to this underwater locale, but it’s equally possible that it refers to an as-yet-unannounced remake or remaster project involving Rapture.

In July 2024, it seemed like a screenshot of BioShock 4 got unofficially shared online. This screenshot was attributed to an unknown visual effects artist from 2K. The image didn’t disclose many specifics about the game, but it offered a glimpse into the game’s early user interface, a weapon, and a lamp that resembles the Art Deco style that is prevalent in Rapture city’s architecture.

From the snapshot, it seems the gameplay allows players to hold up to three weapons simultaneously. Additionally, there appears to be an interface indicating that up to three abilities can be activated using various combinations of a controller’s shoulder buttons. The image further shows a character wielding the Ricochet Shotgun.

In a LinkedIn update, Jeff Spoonhower, a key cinematic designer at 2K, hinted that Cloud Chamber Games has been intensifying its work on BioShock 4. He also mentioned they are seeking additional developers from various teams to contribute to the game’s development.

2021’s earlier whispers hinted at the possible title for BioShock 4: BioShock Isolation. Though these rumors should be treated cautiously, this name suggests that the upcoming game could emphasize horror elements over action. Additionally, it was also speculated around the same time that the game would be set in the 1960s, with an Antarctic city as its main backdrop.

2022 saw Liz Albl, a former senior writer for Ghost of Tsushima, join Cloud Chamber Games. Her new role is heading the narrative team for BioShock 4. With a background in writing for significant titles like Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag, Far Cry 5, and Watch Dogs: Legion, Albl has now taken on this exciting challenge. Additionally, she had experience working on the Wonder Woman game at Monolith, before the studio closed down.
