2K Launcher Removed From Every Title on Epic Games Store and Steam

As a long-time fan of the Civilization series, I can’t help but feel a sense of relief and joy at the news that 2K is finally ditching their launcher for good! After years of dealing with its quirks and occasional frustrations, it feels like a breath of fresh air. The removal of the 2K Launcher from titles on Steam and Epic Games Store is not just good news for Civilization 6 and upcoming games like Borderlands 4, but also for classics like XCOM: Chimera Squad, XCOM 2, and both BioShock remasters.

Previously, Firaxis announced that Civilization 7 wouldn’t require the 2K Launcher for PC play, following its removal in Civilization 6. Now, it has been confirmed by the publishing label that the launcher will no longer be used in any titles on Epic Games Store and Steam as of November 18th.

The impact also reaches the 2K Launcher Beta for Civilization 5. Instead of its original folder, a text file named 2kLauncherRemoved.txt has taken its place, which can safely be deleted. For those enjoying XCOM: Chimera Squad, XCOM 2, the remastered versions of BioShock, Mafia: Definitive Edition, and other titles on both platforms, this change brings good news – you can find instructions for removing any lingering files here, but essentially, this development is beneficial for your gaming experience.

Additionally, it should strive to minimize obstacles for new releases of games like “Borderlands 4,” set to debut next year, in terms of accessibility. On the other hand, “Civilization 7” is slated for release on February 11th, 2025, and will be playable on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PS4, Nintendo Switch, as well as PC platforms. You can find the system requirements for the PC version here.
