3 Cult-Classic Sega Games Are Coming Back in New Collection

As a lifelong Sega fanatic who has spent countless hours navigating through the labyrinth of gaming history, I can’t help but feel a surge of nostalgia upon hearing about the upcoming Earnest Evans Collection. This trilogy, a forgotten gem in the annals of Sega’s storied past, is set to make a triumphant return, much like my own hairline after each passing year.

A group of three Sega games originally released on Sega Genesis and Sega CD between 1991 and 1993 are making a comeback as a new collection. In recent times, Sega has been actively working to resurrect some of its classic games from the past. Last year, Sega unveiled plans for remakes of popular titles such as Golden Axe, Shinobi, Streets of Rage, Crazy Taxi, and Jet Set Radio. Now, enthusiasts yearning for more retro Sega games are in luck, as one Japanese publisher has disclosed that it’s reviving a series that some fans might have overlooked.

Today, Edia has announced that they’re preparing to transfer their Earnest Evans trilogy onto new systems, with a planned release tentatively named the “Earnest Evans Collection.” This upcoming launch is scheduled for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch consoles at an as-yet unspecified date in 2025. The collection will include the games “El Viento,” “Earnest Evans,” and “Anett Futatabi,” all of which were initially developed by Wolf Team for Sega systems back in the early ’90s.

The description of the Earnest Evans series indicates it’s a three-part saga, titled “El Viento“, “Earnest Evans“, and “Anett Futatabi“. This collection was produced by Wolf Team and distributed by Nihon Telenet. The narrative revolves around an action game inspired by the Cthulhu mythos, primarily set in 1920s America, with wind priestess Annette Meyer and adventurer Earnest Evans serving as the principal characters. As we work to preserve the original game’s ambiance, we aim to incorporate features that will appeal not just to fans of the classic games, but also to contemporary gamers.

It’s quite astonishing that the Earnest Evans series is making a comeback, as we haven’t heard anything about it for many years. Intriguingly, Edia has initiated a fundraising campaign to gauge interest from fans in resurrecting this intellectual property. If successful, the Earnest Evans Collection may be released later this year, potentially paving the way for new developments with the franchise.

At present, it’s undecided if the Earnest Evans Collection will be made available outside of Japan. However, considering El Viento and Earnest Evans previously debuted in North America, there’s a strong possibility it might make its way westward. Conversely, Anett Futatabi has only been released in Japan, which would mark the first time for this game if it were to be included in this collection and subsequently released in the West.
