3 Epic MCU Crossover Moments You Can’t Miss!

In the upcoming Disney+ series “Daredevil: Born Again,” Charlie Cox’s Daredevil and Jon Bernthal’s Punisher intersect once more. Additional episodes also hint at a minor overlap between “Daredevil” and the “Ms. Marvel” Disney+ series. With this in mind, now seems like an excellent opportunity to reflect on some standout team-ups within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Given the 20-year history and 35 films, selecting the top three crossover moments wasn’t a simple task. To maintain focus, we’ve primarily chosen instances that were more than just amusing cameos or fan service. Therefore, if you were expecting the Illuminati scene from “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” or anything related to “Deadpool & Wolverine,” you may find it less satisfying.

With that out of the way, here are the 3 best MCU crossover moments.

The Avengers vs The Guardians of the Galaxy — Avengers: Infinity War

Among all Marvel Cinatic Universe (MCU) franchises, the Guardians of the Galaxy series stands out as the most independent in nature. Unlike most Marvel superheroes who operate on Earth, the Guardians’ escapades unfold far beyond our planet in the farthest reaches of space. With a cosmic event like Avengers: Infinity War bringing together characters from across the universe, it was only a matter of time before the band of interstellar outlaws encountered an Avenger or two.

The moment when Peter Quill, Drax, and Mantis interact with Spider-Man, Iron Man, and Doctor Strange on Ebony Maw’s spaceship offers a fantastic opportunity to introduce the Guardians of the Galaxy to the broader Marvel Universe. This interaction not only hints at a possible conflict between these two teams but also showcases the greatest improvisation in the MCU. In his desperation to locate his lost love, Peter Quill points a gun at Spider-Man and demands, “Where is Gamora?” However, Tony Stark, utterly puzzled, replies, “Let me top that, who is Gamora?” To this, Chris Pratt’s encouragement led Dave Bautista as Drax to exclaim, “I can do better than that: WHY is Gamora?” This unexpected question adds a touch of humor to the tense situation and left its mark on Marvel lore.

Spider-Man’s Debut — Captain America: Civil War

In 1999, Marvel encountered financial difficulties and sold the rights for their characters to produce movies and TV shows. This resulted in Sony purchasing the rights for Spider-Man at a relatively low cost of $7 million. Fast forward to 17 years later, Marvel (now owned by Disney) has become a blockbuster sensation at the box office. However, the challenge was that the most popular Marvel character, Spider-Man, was still under the control of another movie studio. Fans were nearly resigned to never seeing Spider-Man alongside the Avengers on screen. But then, Captain America: Civil War was released…

In the movie “Captain America: Civil War,” an intense argument between Captain America and Iron Man takes place outside a closed airport. Fed up with Captain America, Iron Man blurts out the odd phrase “Underoos!” Just as everyone looks on in surprise, Spider-Man swoops down from above, grabbing Captain America’s shield with his web. If you watched the movie in the theater, the audience’s reaction was thunderous. To this day, it remains a mystery how Marvel Studios convinced Sony to share control of Spider-Man, but fans everywhere are thankful for it.

Tony Stark Meets General Ross — The Incredible Hulk

Most young readers who are new to Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movies will discover them starting from the MCU era. However, Millennials and Gen Xers recall a time in the early to mid-2000s when for every successful movie like Spider-Man or X-Men, there was a flop like Daredevil. The sequel to Daredevil, Elektra, didn’t even include Matt Murdock despite its release. When Iron Man introduced the tradition of having an after-credits teaser for another film in the MCU, fans were hesitant. After all, they had been disappointed before, and while Samuel L. Jackson’s appearance as Nick Fury was exciting, there was no guarantee they would see the character again beyond that brief cameo.

In a different vein, the Incredible Hulk presented a unique scenario. Once the credits rolled and viewers were graced with Robert Downey Jr.’s portrayal of Tony Stark, it became clear that a cinematic universe similar to the comic books might become a reality. The brief scene where Stark mentions assembling a team was not only a nod to the Avengers but also a roadmap for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Iron Man’s appearance in the Incredible Hulk’s universe demonstrated that a contemporary cinematic universe could indeed succeed. The events following this, as one might say, have been etched into history.
