3 Mind-Bending Severance Theories That Will Haunt Your Dreams!

It seems I’m among those who appreciate a more traditional TV viewing experience, where shows are released weekly rather than all at once. Despite my fondness for binge-watching entire seasons in one go, the anticipation of waiting a week between episodes adds an unique charm that can’t be duplicated. Take the Apple TV+ original, “Severance“, for example – its addictive nature makes the wait for each new episode almost unbearable, yet it’s one of the top 10 shows to watch on Apple TV+ currently. Watching a show like “Severance” is reminiscent of the employees on the severed floor, as time seems to move differently when immersed in such captivating content. There have been episodes that seemed to pass by so swiftly, I feared I’d dozed off momentarily, much like Irving.

Although testing my patience to its utmost, the delay of a week for fresh Severance installments does have its advantages. For one, it provides something exciting to anticipate every seven days. Moreover, this gap fuels intense and arguably unhealthy speculation about theories that can be downright mind-boggling. Some fan theories are so intricate they occasionally keep me awake at night as I try to comprehend them. The Lumon campus is enshrouded in such a multitude of mysteries that not delving into them would be an injustice to the series itself.

The Truth About MDR

Ever since the first episode of Severance, Mark S.’s work with the MDR team has been a subject of endless discussion and speculation. It’s a key theory surrounding the show, one that I often ponder about. Despite three years passing since its debut, we haven’t seemed to uncover what macrodata refinement actually does or achieves. Though characters have hinted at it being designed to evoke specific emotions, we’re still unsure of how these emotions connect to Lumon’s activities.

As per Kier Eagan, the cherished creator of Lumon, each human spirit encompasses a measure of what he termed as the four temperaments. These are sorrow, mirth, fear, and malice. Some fans of ‘Severance‘ speculate that these four temperaments play a direct role in the work of the MDR team. In the Season 2 premiere, there seems to be a hint of this theory when Mark was depicted working on a file linked to Ms. Casey (Dichen Lachman). Is it possible that the MDR team is perfecting the chips within severed individuals? If so, isn’t it questionable to assign Mark to work on this particular file, given its sensitive nature?

The Innies Who Stare at Goats

Though we’re gradually unraveling the potential truth behind the MDR team’s work, there remains one enigma that continues to baffle us: the significance of the goats. Their purpose is as perplexing as ever, with numerous possible meanings that could leave anyone dizzy. For instance, when we first encountered the goats in Season 1, it seemed almost too fantastical to be real. It felt like a hallucination. While some viewers speculate that the goats symbolize one of the four humors or temperaments, this interpretation is still very much up for debate. How exactly are they connected to these temperaments? Are they a metaphor for controlling your emotions? However, if that’s the case, then why are the goats kept under wraps?

The trailer for Season 2 of Severance surprised us with some unexpected and possibly misleading visuals, much like the show itself. With its intricate details, Severance will make you reconsider your understanding of the series. One of the most puzzling images was a quick scene showing a shepherd inside a room filled with goats on hills. Whether this shepherd is actually real or not, it introduces numerous possibilities. Could the shepherd be a former employee from the severed branch? Might the shepherd be the same enigmatic character we encountered in Season 1 while tending to the goats? Although this character could relate to the “control your anger” theory, we’ll have to wait and see how it fits into the larger narrative.

Keep the Gaslight On

In the first episode of Season 2 of Severance, it appeared that Lumon had learned its lesson about mistreating severed employees following an uprising led by the MDR team. However, in a heartwarming claymation video, narrated by a talking Lumon building voiced by Keanu Reeves, we learn that Lumon’s hand was forced when news of the MDR uprising got out and made headlines. But, given Lumon’s history of rule-breaking and dishonesty, how can we be sure they aren’t manipulating the MDR team with false promises? Furthermore, there is uncertainty surrounding Helly (Britt Lower) as we question whether she is truly Helena or not, leaving us with many unanswered questions.

In Season 1, it was evident that Lumon cannot be fully relied upon when they tried to segregate the MDR and O&D teams. Milchick (Tramell Tillman) portrayed a conflict between the departments, but this was swiftly discredited by Burt (Christopher Walken). It seems every worker is being subjected to intense manipulation to maintain control and discourage inquiries. If the upper floor has supposedly triumphed, why does it continue to feel as if the team is trapped? This could be a tactic to conceal Lumon’s board members. We know little about them, and it appears they are content with keeping it that way. Are they even human? The show Severance suggests that unseen entities might be orchestrating events from behind closed doors. Could this idea be too far-fetched? It’s perplexing to determine the identities of Lumon’s board members, leaving us wondering if supernatural forces are at play.
