The “Back to the Future” trilogy is one of the most cherished movie series, a blend of humor, science-fiction escapades, clever dialogue, and pure excitement. It follows Marty McFly, a rebellious yet endearing teenager, as he embarks on a wild time-traveling journey alongside his quirky and brilliant friend, Doc Brown, who’s invented a time machine in a DeLorean car. The films jump between different time periods – from ensuring Marty’s parents fall in love in 1955 so that he’ll be born, to rescuing Marty and his girlfriend Jennifer’s future children from danger in 2015, preventing Doc Brown’s death in 1885, and many more thrilling adventures across the timelines.
Despite their entertaining nature, these movies do present some unexplained inconsistencies in the plot. It’s not surprising that time travel films often struggle to depict how tampering with time should work, given the numerous paradoxes involved. Explaining them all could lead to further confusion or delve into complex theoretical discussions. Nevertheless, I’d like to voice my thoughts on the plot inconsistencies in the movie Back to the Future.
Why’s Jennifer Still There?
In the whirlwind of 2015, I stumbled upon an extraordinary encounter – colliding with my own future self! After our mission was accomplished, Marty McFly and Doc Brown found themselves back in 1985, leaving me unconscious on my porch. Doc whispered a secret to Marty, that upon awakening, I would chalk our incredible adventure up as nothing more than a wild dream. However, this wasn’t the ordinary 1985 we left behind; it was a world where the McFly family had fallen apart and Biff Tannen reigned supreme, thanks to the sports almanac his future self had handed over.
As a cinephile looking back at the thrilling escapades of Doc and Marty McFly, I find myself pondering an intriguing question about the third installment of “Back to the Future.” You see, at the end of the film, Marty reunites with Jennifer, who’s peacefully sleeping on her porch. Now, considering the complex time-travel maneuvers they executed – dropping her off in an alternate 1985, then darting back to 1955, destroying that troublesome sports almanac, jetting off to 1885, and finally returning to 1985 – one might wonder how Jennifer managed to stay put in the exact same spot. Given all the tampering with the timeline, wouldn’t it have been logical for her to end up somewhere else entirely? It’s perplexing how she remained completely unaffected by all these alterations to both past and present.
There Were Two DeLoreans in 1885
In the finale of “Back to the Future Part II”, a bolt of lightning destroys Doc’s DeLorean, but it turns out that this lightning sent Doc back to 1885 instead. With Marty still in 1955, he encounters the Doc from his future who had just assisted another Marty in returning to 1955. Together, they head to the spot where the old Doc hid the DeLorean for Marty’s return to 1985. However, upon arrival, Marty finds that the past Doc has been killed by Buford “Mad Dog” Tannen, the great-grandfather of Biff Tannen. This prompts Marty to travel back to 1885 to save his mentor, Doc.
In the movie scenario, the DeLorean that Marty McFly utilized for his 1885 journey runs out of gas, leaving them to resort to a steam engine to reach the required speed of 88 mph and return to 1985. However, the fate of the DeLorean Doc Brown used upon landing in 1885 remains unknown. One might speculate that it had fuel or spare parts which could have been useful for fixing Marty’s DeLorean. Yet, this aspect is never addressed in the storyline, which can be a bit perplexing since it could have simplified their predicament – perhaps Doc repurposed it for his colossal ice machine project.
How Does the Time-Traveling DeLorean Even Exist?
After Doc and Marty bring Jennifer back to her 1985 home following their adventures in 2015, they find that this isn’t the same 1985 they initially knew. In this altered timeline, Biff Tannen is now Hill Valley’s wealthiest and most corrupt resident, amassing his fortune with a sports almanac from the future that allowed him to consistently win bets on successful sporting teams. Tragically, the McFly family has fallen apart, Hill Valley has transformed into a dystopian wasteland, and Doc has been institutionalized after being labeled as insane.
There’s a problem with the sequence of events. In the alternate 1985, Marty reads a newspaper revealing Doc was committed in 1983. If this is true, then he wouldn’t have constructed the DeLorean time machine initially. One might wonder, shouldn’t the DeLorean they had vanish like Marty nearly did in the first Back to the Future movie? In fact, it implies that everything that occurred after the first film never took place at all.
