3 Things That Still Don’t Make Sense About Avengers: Infinity War

Discussing the Marvel Cinematic Universe inevitably leads to mentioning “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame.” Despite the passage of almost a decade, these films continue to be the studio’s grandest productions, significantly influencing popular culture. Even those not particularly fond of Marvel can appreciate their immense scale (earning over $4.7 billion worldwide collectively is no easy task). However, it’s essential to acknowledge that some aspects might not receive a comprehensive explanation. When dealing with a cinematic universe, even when a specialized team assists in scriptwriting to ensure coherence and completeness, there can still be narrative loopholes – especially given the complex source material from comic books.

These details may slip past some viewers as they might not be central to the main storyline, yet an ardent Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) fan would hardly overlook them. Here are a few puzzling aspects from “Avengers: Infinity War” that remain unexplained and seem contradictory.

The Exchange of The Time Stone For Tony Stark’s Life

As a dedicated movie fan, I can’t help but ponder over one intriguing enigma found within “Avengers: Infinity War” – the surprising move by Dr. Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) to hand the Time Stone to Thanos, a decision that contradicted his earlier assertions. When the situation took a grim turn, Stephen Strange peered into 14,000,605 possible outcomes and found only one where the Avengers emerged victorious. He had also made it clear to Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) that he wouldn’t think twice about keeping the stone if it meant sacrificing Iron Man or even Spider-Man (Tom Holland). So, giving the stone away might appear as a gesture of regret or compassion, but in reality, if he had seen all the potential scenarios, his choice was actually a paradoxical one.

By surrendering the Time Stone, Thanos (Josh Brolin) gained an opportunity to seize the Mind Stone again, returning to the moment before Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen) destroyed it. Though this could be clarified at a later time since Doctor Strange hinted it was essential for the Avengers’ triumph, it’s important to recall that the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton) in Doctor Strange (2016) couldn’t foresee events beyond her own demise. Consequently, Thanos wouldn’t have been aware of the consequences following the Blip’s impact on him. This situation presents a bit of a paradox.

The Real Reason Behind Thanos’ Actions

In the movies “Infinity War” and “Endgame,” Thanos’ motivations were presented, yet they weren’t fully understood due to their complex and contradictory nature. Thanos portrayed himself as a balancer of the universe, intending to eradicate half of all life to prevent overpopulation and resource depletion, which he saw as causing impending collapse. This was his justification for what could be considered a “necessary evil,” as he believed that the sacrifice of half the population would ensure a long-term sustainable future for those left behind. However, once this act was completed, Thanos anticipated finding peace or at least some semblance of it.

In some instances, a villain’s objectives might seem excessive or irrational. However, Thanos’ actions are so extreme that one may wonder why he didn’t simply find a quiet, isolated place from the beginning instead of causing chaos and destruction. His ideology is indeed radical and preposterous, resulting in tragic outcomes such as Iron Man’s demise. While characters are inherently complex, Thanos’ decision to retreat to a serene planet post-conflict, as if this was the sole means for him to find peace, seems inconsistent with his conviction that a compulsory reset is necessary to restore balance.

Heimdall’s Abilities That Failed to Predict Thanos

One intriguing mystery within the Marvel Cinematic Universe fanbase revolves around why Heimdall, despite his exceptional senses capable of perceiving far-off events and subtle sounds, failed to detect Thanos as a danger. It’s a conundrum that still leaves us somewhat puzzled. Although we might guess reasons for this anomaly, the exact explanation remains elusive.

Heimdall’s extraordinary abilities encompass vast vision and acute hearing, yet it seems he lacked the authority to halt the villain from initiating his assault. However, these capabilities are confined to the Nine Realms, implying that any threats beyond those borders, such as Thanos who hails from Titan or was on Xandar, would escape Heimdall’s “vision.

In “Avengers: Infinity War,” the story begins in outer space, picking up where “Thor: Ragnarok” (2017) left off. However, the exact moment when the villain gains access to the spaceship carrying the Asgardian survivors is not shown, causing some confusion. Since there’s no definitive statement about which parts of space are part of the Nine Realms, it’s assumed that they were near Asgard when Thanos attacked, explaining why Heimdall didn’t foresee his arrival. Nevertheless, this issue remains somewhat puzzling and could have been clarified within the movie, given Heimdall’s crucial role in guarding the Bifrost and potentially preventing the ensuing events.
