Occasionally, when a TV show becomes highly successful, it may spawn a sequel or offshoot known as a spinoff. Networks frequently generate these spinoffs to build upon the success of one hit show, offering new perspectives and storylines connected to the original series. However, spinoffs are not always as popular as their predecessors, sometimes perceived as mere attempts to capitalize on the initial show’s success. Yet, there are instances where a spinoff surpasses its originating series in quality and longevity. Here are three television spinoffs that managed to outshine the shows from which they were born, ranging from ’90s sitcoms to superhero programs and even an animated series you might have forgotten was a spinoff.
Saved By the Bell
Originating on NBC in 1989, it’s easy to overlook the fact that “Saved By the Bell” was actually a spin-off series. Initially, it was based on “Good Morning, Miss Bliss,” a short-lived show aired on the Disney Channel. The original series centered around Miss Carrie Bliss, a junior high teacher in Indianapolis, and her eighth-grade students. However, after only one season, the series underwent a transformation into “Saved By the Bell.” Instead of focusing on Miss Bliss, this new version centered around one of the students – Zack Morris (Mark-Paul Gosselaar). Along with Lisa Turtle (Lark Voorhies) and Samuel “Screech” Powers (Dustin Diamond), the series moved from Indiana to California, introduced some new characters, and reworked the concept of “Good Morning, Miss Bliss” into a fresh, yet similar, storyline.
Originally airing as a primetime show on Sundays, Saved By the Bell eventually shifted to Saturday mornings as part of NBC’s Teen NBC (TNBC) programming lineup. The show ran for four seasons and gave birth to two spin-offs, titled Saved By the Bell: The College Years and Saved By the Bell: The New Class, as well as two TV movies. Decades later, a reboot series was also produced. Despite the fact that its predecessor, Good Morning, Miss Bliss, is largely forgotten, Saved By the Bell has continued to thrive as an iconic piece of pop culture, surpassing the success of its original series.
You can now stream the ’90s version of “Saved By the Bell” on Amazon Prime Video. Interestingly, Prime Video categorizes “Good Morning, Miss Bliss” as the first season of the show.
The Flash
Absolutely! The CW’s Arrowverse originated from the series “Arrow,” and “The Flash” was its first spin-off. In season 2 of “Arrow,” an episode titled “The Scientist” introduced Grant Gustin as Barry Allen, who served as a precursor to “The Flash.” Although it didn’t officially premiere until nearly a year later, “The Flash” got its own pilot episode after Barry Allen made his debut on “Arrow.
In simpler terms, “The Flash” premiered as the second-highest rated pilot episode in The CW network’s history, surpassing the debut of “Arrow.” Over time, “The Flash” consistently drew larger audiences and garnered more favorable reviews due to its lighter tone. Although some might say both shows were equally good, “The Flash” ran for nine seasons while “Arrow” did not, making “Superman & Lois,” which is only loosely connected to the Arrowverse, the current series on air.
All seasons of The Flash (and Arrow) are now streaming on Netflix.
The Simpsons
Absolutely, dear ones! It’s true that “The Simpsons” is among the longest-running shows ever and has left a profound mark on our collective culture. However, contrary to popular belief, it actually began as a spinoff. The Simpson family first appeared in short segments on “The Tracey Ullman Show.” These segments were part of “The Tracey Ullman Show” for three consecutive seasons before evolving into their own hour-long primetime series, which premiered on December 17, 1989, not 1981 as I previously stated. Over the past nearly 35 years, the show has produced close to 800 episodes and has far outlived its predecessor. It’s even had a full-length movie and continues to shape popular culture in significant ways. “The Simpsons” isn’t just a reflection of society; it often sets trends and influences it as well.
The Simpsons is currently in its 36th season on Fox. You can also watch The Simpsons on Disney+.
