This year marks the 30th anniversary of the film “ “, a fact that feels quite extraordinary (or “totally mind-blowing”). The movie was adapted into a brief television series in 1996, featuring Rachel Blanchard portraying the character of Cher Horowitz, who became iconic through Alicia Silverstone’s performance. “Clueless ” ran for three seasons on both ABC and UPN, leaving fans curious as to whether Silverstone would ever reprise her role as the affluent yet altruistic character.
The wait is finally over! As announced, a reboot of the classic movie “Clueless” is under development for Peacock, and Alicia Silverstone will return to star in and produce the television series. Unlike the initial film, this reboot will not be another feature film but rather a TV show instead. Amy Heckerling, who wrote and directed the original “Clueless,” is also joining as an executive producer, along with Robert Lawrence, who was a producer on the original movie.
The upcoming “Clueless” series is being penned and overseen by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage from the production company Fake Empire, who have previously collaborated on other projects.
Silverstone is Set to Return
I’m thrilled to share that I’ll be reprising my role as Cher in the upcoming sequel series, a collaborative effort between CBS Studios and Universal Television, part of the Universal Studios Group. It’s a pleasure to know that CBS TV Studios holds the television rights for the original Paramount feature film, where I shared the screen with talented stars like Brittany Murphy, Donald Faison, Breckin Meyer, Elisa Donovan, and Stacey Dash.
Six years ago, a new version of the Clueless TV series was being developed, with a focus on the character of Dionne, portrayed by Stacey Dash. However, it never progressed past the development stage and ended up on the streaming platform Peacock.
CBS Studios persisted with the “Clueless” project and eventually brought it to the marketplace where Peacock, who had maintained interest in a “Clueless” series, picked it up. Previously, Alicia Silverstone hinted at her potential return. Now, she is slated to appear in the ongoing production of the Acorn TV series, “Irish Blood.

The Original Movie Was Based on a Jane Austen Novel
The movie “Clueless,” a teen comedy centered around growing up, draws inspiration (although loosely) from the 1815 novel “Emma.” The story revolves around Cher, a prosperous high school student known for her kindness, who befriends a newcomer named Tai, played by Brittany Murphy. Not only does she help Tai fit in, but she also attempts to pair off two of her teachers, portrayed by Wallace Shawn and Twink Caplan. The film generated $88 million globally, but it truly shone with sales from home video and sparked a 1996 spinoff, as well as a book series.
Clueless is Timeless
Regardless of being three decades old, the movie “Clueless” remains relevant as an enduring tale of first love. It’s included in the list of ’90s Romantic Movies that Still Hold Up, and much of its appeal lies in Cher’s character development. As Cher matures and receives a dose of reality, she learns about what constitutes a healthy relationship. When she comprehends how to acknowledge and love people, as well as herself, for who they genuinely are, she discovers love.
The Clueless TV series is in development at Peacock.
