4 Actors Rumored to Lead DCU’s First Batman Spin-off Movie

According to reports, DC Studios is considering four potential actors for a major part in their first Batman spin-off within the new DC Universe. As they rapidly grow their superhero realm, 2025 will see the premieres of both Superman and the second season of Peacemaker. Additionally, Matt Reeves’ The Batman: Part II and a movie focused on the Batman antagonist Clayface are also in development.

In the upcoming movie, Basil Karlo, also known as Clayface, is portrayed as a struggling B-movie actor. To maintain his relevance in the competitive industry, he resorts to using an experimental serum that grants him the ability to alter his physical form. This character has been featured multiple times in animated and video game adaptations of Batman, but this will mark his debut in a live-action DC film.

The spin-off featuring the character Clayface is currently being penned by horror mastermind Mike Flanagan, known for his work on shows like Midnight Mass and The Haunting of Hill House. In late 2024, DC Studios head James Gunn gave the project the go-ahead, and since then, development on this DC villain film has been moving at a rapid pace. Recently, director James Watkins (of Speak No Evil fame) joined the team, and it appears that casting is currently in process.

As reported by Aaron Couch and Borys Kit in The Hollywood Reporter’s Heat Vision newsletter, it is expected that four actors will undergo auditions for the main character of Clayface/Basil Karlo within the next week.

These Are the Actors Rumored To Be the DCU’s New Clayface

George MacKay

British actor George Mackay gained prominence for his performances in director Sam Mendes’ war movie “1917” and the Stephen King-based production titled “11.22.63”.

Mackay was previously mentioned as a possible candidate for the Adam Warlock role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (a part that ultimately went to British actor Will Poulter). This might present an opportunity for this actor to secure a position in a different superhero movie franchise.

Tom Blyth

Tom Blyth skyrocketed to fame following his portrayal as young Coriolanus Snow in “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes“. This 30-year-old British actor is also starring in the lead role for the Western drama titled “Billy the Kid“.

Blyth has often taken on major franchise roles, and his intricate depiction of Snow in “The Hunger Games” as a rising and ruthless sociopath might be relevant to the psychological transformation Clayface is expected to undergo.

Jack O’Connell

As a fan, I can’t help but acknowledge Jack O’Connell’s knack for portraying sinister characters. Most recently, he delved into the chilling world of vampires in Ryan Coogler’s movie, Sinners, where he embodied the menacing head vampire, Remick. Moreover, I eagerly anticipate his upcoming roles in the zombie film, 28 Years Later, its sequel The Bone Temple, and Godzilla x Kong: Supernova.

The actor, given his familiarity with horror films and major franchise properties, seems perfectly suited for the DC Universe’s “Clayface” movie, hinting at a potential excellent match.

Leo Woodall

Leo Woodall completes the group of actors who could play Clayface, and fans will likely recognize him from his appearances in “The White Lotus” Season 2, “One Day” on Netflix, and “Prime Target” on Apple TV+.

The potential candidates for the role of Clayface appear to favor British actors, suggesting that the DC Universe’s Basil Karlo might be of British descent or adopt a British accent in the movie. In the animated series Harley Quinn, Alan Tudyk employed a formal, exaggerated accent to portray Clayface, highlighting the character’s fixation on his performances.

The upcoming “Clayface” film is aiming for a release on September 11, 2026, and as casting gossip intensifies, it appears that production is running smoothly according to plan.
