As a seasoned gamer who has witnessed the rise and fall of numerous gaming franchises, I can’t help but feel a twinge of nostalgia when I think about PlayStation‘s golden era. The games that defined my youth are now gathering dust, while the current generation of gamers are left wondering why some of these iconic properties seem to be forgotten.
This month, nostalgia for PlayStation is at an all-time high, largely due to the launch of Astro Bot. Although Team Asobi’s new platformer is impressive in its own right, it’s also jam-packed with Easter eggs and references to some of PlayStation’s most influential games from the past 30 years. Meanwhile, the disappointing performance of PlayStation’s recent project, Concord, has left many questioning why certain classic franchises aren’t being utilized more actively.
As a dedicated PlayStation enthusiast, I can’t help but express my excitement about revisiting some iconic franchises on the next-gen console. Here are four legendary series from PlayStation that I truly believe deserve a fresh start on the PlayStation 5:
Sly Cooper
Back in the days of the PlayStation 2, there was no denying that Sly Cooper was the iconic face of the console for me as a gamer. The stealth-action series kicked off in 2002 with “Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus,” and over the years, it grew to include a total of four games, culminating in “Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time” on PS3 in 2013. It’s been nearly a decade since then, but sadly, since the release of “Thieves in Time,” Sony hasn’t given Sly and his gang any new adventures to embark on.
It seems highly plausible that fans are eager for the return of Sly Cooper on PlayStation 5, given Sony’s history of collaborating with external developers for their franchises. For instance, “Thieves in Time” was developed by Sanzaru Games instead of the original creators, Sucker Punch Productions, who made the first three games. This pattern suggests that Sony might be open to partnering with another studio worldwide to revive Sly Cooper. Such a decision would give PlayStation’s internal developers the freedom to concentrate on their own intellectual properties, with Sucker Punch possibly focusing on a follow-up to “Ghost of Tsushima.
Resistance
Originated during the PlayStation 3 period, Resistance served as a major project for Insomniac Games from 2006 to 2011. It produced a total of three primary installments (all developed by Insomniac) plus some side stories tailored for PSP and PS Vita. The most recent addition to the franchise, Resistance: Burning Skies, was released in 2012 and received unfavorable reviews from both critics and enthusiasts alike.
Resistance is a property that I think those within PlayStation should be more eager to bring back for a couple of different reasons. For starters, Resistance isn’t so locked down to specific characters that a comeback would be difficult. Franchises like Uncharted and God of War are directly synonymous with Nathan Drake and Kratos, but the same can’t be said for Resistance. This would allow for a studio outside of Insomniac to come in and put its own touch on the series without having to worry too much about incorporating certain characters or story beats from past titles.
Given the characteristic nature of the Resistance series as a shooter, Sony might consider expanding into the live-service market by introducing a new installment. Although it may seem unconventional for contemporary games to launch with both a single-player campaign and multiplayer mode, recent titles like Space Marine 2 demonstrate that there’s still demand for such games. By reviving Resistance and adding another first-person shooter to the PlayStation’s exclusive lineup, they could cater to this continuing interest.
Infamous
Sucker Punch Productions, the team behind Sly Cooper, shifted their focus to create the Infamous series once they parted ways with that franchise. The first game in this series was released in 2009, followed by a sequel in 2011 and a soft reboot named Infamous: Second Son in 2014. Over a decade has passed since then, but Sony continues to keep the Infamous series active, which I’d like to see take a break for a while.
In certain aspects, Infamous seems to have been ahead of its own era. The popularity of superhero media, particularly in games like open-world ones, has soared since the launch of Second Son. This trend is evident in PlayStation’s success with the Marvel’s Spider-Man series, suggesting a high demand for such games among fans. Whether Infamous can stand shoulder-to-shoulder with titles like Marvel’s Spider-Man and the upcoming Marvel’s Wolverine remains to be seen, but if I were in charge, I would definitely consider reviving the franchise.
Bloodborne
Indeed, Bloodborne deserves a spot in our discussion due to several compelling factors. It’s hard to believe that, despite the demand, we haven’t seen a remaster, remake, PC version, or even a 60fps upgrade for FromSoftware’s 2015 action game on PS5 yet. Some argue that Bloodborne is FromSoftware’s finest work, which is remarkable given their illustrious portfolio that includes Dark Souls, Elden Ring, and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice.
Currently, it seems plausible that if Sony (PlayStation) decides to act regarding Bloodborne, a follow-up game could be the most logical choice. Regardless of whether FromSoftware chooses to participate in the project or not, since PlayStation holds the Bloodborne intellectual property, it’s their call. A new Bloodborne game on PS5 would undoubtedly be significant news and would place it alongside Demon’s Souls as a Souls-like exclusive to the PlayStation platform.
