Since his introduction in 1976, Richard Rider, also known as Nova, has stood out as one of the key cosmic champions in Marvel Comics, created by writer Marv Wolfman and artist John Buscema. Originally an average Earth teenager, he was selected by the last living member of the intergalactic Nova Corps to assume his powers, which encompassed increased strength, flight, energy manipulation, and a link to the Xandarian Worldmind. Despite not reaching the same level of fame as other Marvel characters such as The Hulk or Wolverine, Nova has been instrumental in several significant crossover stories and has served on various teams.
For quite some time now, speculation has abounded regarding Marvel Studios integrating Nova into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but so far, no concrete steps have been taken. Nevertheless, given the presence of the Nova Corps in James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy and the expanding roster of cosmic characters within the MCU, Nova seems like a natural fit. If Marvel Studios seeks fresh ideas, these five Nova comic storylines could serve as excellent adaptations.
Nova: Resurrection
After the occurrences of “The Thanos Imperative“, Richard Rider comes back to life. However, he finds it challenging to adjust to his renewed existence. He feels out of place among Earth’s heroes as well as the cosmic heroes he once fought with. Despite this, Richard is resolute about rebuilding his life. His purpose is revitalized when he forms a friendship with Sam Alexander, the youth who assumed the role of Nova after Richard’s demise.
This tale seems well-suited for integration into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Since Thanos has previously destroyed Xandar, home to the Nova Corps, we can introduce Richard as the lone survivor. He could then guide Sam in assuming his role as Nova, similar to how Hank Pym mentored Scott Lang in Ant-Man.
War of Kings
In a turn of events, the Kree, under the rule of King Black Bolt (an Inhuman), have declared war on the Shi’ar Empire, which is governed by the merciless Emperor Vulcan, Cyclops’ long-lost brother. Amidst this grand conflict, Nova finds himself in a precarious situation, darting across the cosmos to safeguard planets that are unintentionally ensnared in the battle’s chaos.
Previously, we’ve encountered the Kree and Inhumans in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, although not as extensively as some fans might prefer. This paves the way for a potential “War of Kings” film in the future. It doesn’t necessarily have to be a massive crossover movie; instead, the central conflict could provide an opportunity to introduce Nova as a cosmic peacekeeper.
Realm of Kings
Following the events of “War of Kings”, a rift in space, named The Fault, emerges, allowing intrusions from a distorted parallel universe called the Cancerverse. To counteract this impending interdimensional peril, Nova and the Nova Corps are compelled to use all their resources, even seeking aid from the Guardians of the Galaxy.
Transforming “Realm of Kings” would be an exciting method to introduce Nova, as most prior crossover movies have primarily focused on Earth; a space-centric MCU event film like “Realm of Kings” could create quite the stir, while also providing more opportunities for existing cosmic characters. Moreover, given the multiverse has been extensively explored, “Realm of Kings” could seamlessly integrate with this idea.
Annihilation
In “Annihilation”, chaos erupts across the universe when Annihilus and his destructive wave attack. The Nova Corps suffer heavy losses, leaving Richard Rider as their sole survivor. Now, he allies with Drax, Silver Surfer, and even Ronan the Accuser to confront a seemingly invincible enemy.
Among the widely-circulated speculations regarding Marvel Studios’ Nova project, one particularly intriguing theory suggested that Annihilus would serve as the primary villain. We continue to believe this concept could make a fantastic addition to the story. With Ronan the Accuser presumably deceased and the Silver Surfer set for a reintroduction in the MCU, not to mention the surviving members of the Guardians of the Galaxy, it seems plausible that this narrative could unfold on the big screen in some shape or form.
Nova: The Origin of Richard Rider
In this backstory, we discover that Richard Rider, an ordinary teenager, unexpectedly receives extraordinary abilities from Rhomann Dey, a Nova Corps member on his deathbed. Not just that, he is drawn into a conflict between the Xandarians and the Skrulls, forcing him to juggle his duties as a high school student with his role as a guardian of cosmic harmony.
In another time period, much like Captain Marvel’s setting, this tale might be reimagined. The narrative could delve into the Nova Corps during a period of destruction by Thanos, where Rhomann Dey (portrayed by John C. Reilly, who made his debut in Guardians of the Galaxy) hands over the role of Nova to a young Richard Rider moments before his demise. Subsequently, we could journey through his early years as an aspiring superhero, witnessing his growth and eventual emergence into his full potential in the present.
