In the upcoming film “Captain America: Brave New World”, the Captain America series breaks the trend by surpassing three movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, excluding the Avengers saga. The standalone Captain America movie starring Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson is about to debut, marking a significant milestone 14 years after “Captain America: The First Avenger” introduced one of the earliest Marvel Comics heroes on the big screen. Over these years, the image of Captain America has undergone substantial transformation in the public sphere, and the films featuring this icon have become some of the highest-grossing movies ever made.
Throughout the journey of standalone Captain America films, some of history’s most renowned actors have graced the screen, such as Robert Redford, Samuel L. Jackson, and Tommy Lee Jones, among others. Surprisingly, there were also several talented actors who almost joined this franchise but ultimately didn’t appear in any Captain America movie. These unrealized castings provide an intriguing peek into potential alternate narratives for Marvel Cinematic Universe installments that could have been drastically different from the versions we eventually saw.
Jeff Goldblum in Captain America: The First Avenger
In the movie “Thor: Ragnarok,” Jeff Goldblum’s performance as The Grandmaster was one of its standout features, with this eccentric actor leaving audiences in stitches as a madcap galactic overlord. However, many years prior, Goldblum nearly assumed a much more realistic Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) role. This “Jurassic Park” veteran came extremely close to playing Senator Brandt in “Captain America: The First Avenger,” a character who recruits Steve Rogers for a USO tour. Ultimately, Goldblum declined the part (which was later played by actor Michael Brandon), paving the way for him to provide countless unforgettable chuckles in 2017’s “Ragnarok.
Anna Kendrick in Captain America: The Winter Soldier
During the creation process of “Captain America: The Winter Soldier”, there were no hurdles encountered when selecting fresh characters such as Anthony Mackie for Sam Wilson/The Falcon. However, the role of Sharon Carter was a subject of much debate. Throughout the latter half of 2012, numerous actresses were speculated to play the female lead in “The Winter Soldier”. One such name was Anna Kendrick. With her recent success in “Pitch Perfect” and her Oscar nomination for “Up in the Air” still fresh, Kendrick would have been an impressive addition to this superhero film. Nevertheless, it’s challenging to envision Carter making full use of Kendrick’s comedic prowess. Ultimately, Emily VanCamp was cast instead.
Nikolaj Coster-Waldau in Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Initially, it was strongly considered that Jamie Lannister himself, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, would land a significant villain role in “Captain America: The Winter Soldier”. Towards the end of 2012, his name was among those under discussion for Brock Rumlow/Crossbones. However, it was Frank Grillo who eventually bagged this part and reprised it in later Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) projects such as “Captain America: Civil War”. Although Coster-Waldau didn’t end up joining the cast, Marvel Studios did collaborate with several lead actors from “Game of Thrones” on subsequent productions. Notably, Emilia Clarke, Kit Harrington, and Peter Dinklage have all taken on important supporting roles in MCU projects released post-2017.
Mary Elizabeth Winstead in Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Similar to Anna Kendrick, Mary Elizabeth Winstead was strongly considered for the character of Sharon Carter. Unlike other potential candidates, Winstead was often mentioned as a serious contender for the part. However, no further information has been released about why this casting didn’t happen in the end. It could have been due to scheduling issues or Mary Elizabeth Winstead’s reluctance to commit to multiple movies. In any case, Emily VanCamp ultimately secured the temporary role of Sharon Carter that was initially favored for Mary Elizabeth Winstead.
Evangeline Lilly in Captain America: Civil War
In “Captain America: Civil War”, a variety of superheroes clashed, among them Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man (Scott Lang). Some viewers might have wondered why Evangeline Lilly’s character Hope van Dyne/The Wasp wasn’t present during the chaotic superhero showdown. Interestingly, Hope was initially considered to appear as The Wasp in “Civil War”. However, it was deemed more suitable for her first appearance as The Wasp to happen in a standalone Ant-Man film, where the significance of this debut could be fully appreciated. Even though she didn’t fight in the “Civil War” battle, Lilly has expressed gratitude for not being included in that production, as it ultimately proved beneficial for her character’s development.
Captain America: Civil War is now streaming on Disney+.
