In the upcoming movie “John Wick: Chapter 5″, our favorite hitman, John Wick, is back in action once more. Yet, many significant questions remain unanswered about Baba Yaga’s next film. Lionsgate announced “John Wick: Chapter 5” as part of their 2025 CinemaCon presentation, along with other exciting news such as an animated prequel for the franchise, Donnie Yen set to direct the Caine spin-off from “John Wick: Chapter 4”, and various additional projects. Given the immense popularity of the John Wick series and its influence on action films, it’s clear why Lionsgate is eager to expand the John Wick universe as much as possible. However, there’s a major hurdle for the franchise since John Wick himself is supposedly deceased.
John’s death occurred towards the end of “John Wick: Chapter 4” in late 2023, where he and Caine (Donnie Yen) were compelled to clash in a duel mandated by the High Table. Resurrecting character deaths is not uncommon in popular entertainment series, but since “John Wick: Chapter 5” lacks any supernatural or futuristic elements, it faces a more intricate challenge. The following are five key questions that “John Wick: Chapter 5” must resolve.
How Is John Wick Alive (& Did He Even Really Die?)
A key question that arises regarding John Wick: Chapter 5 is how Baba Yaga manages to reappear, given that he apparently died in John Wick: Chapter 4. In the climactic High Table duel with his former friend Caine, John sustained multiple gunshot wounds that appeared lethal. Even in the final scene of the movie, John’s allies, Winston Scott (Ian McShane) and the Bowery King (Laurence Fishburne), paid their respects at John’s grave. Given the emphasis placed on John’s death in John Wick: Chapter 4, the upcoming movie needs to provide a convincing explanation for his resurgence.
Following the release of John Wick: Chapter 4, speculation has arisen about whether John truly perished or if it was a cleverly staged deception. If John did indeed fake his death, it would imply that he had meticulously planned this outcome for some time. Moreover, Caine, Winston, and the Bowery King might have been involved in the plot, given their close ties to John. The idea of John Wick’s demise being a sophisticated hoax opens up various possibilities for the direction of John Wick: Chapter 5. However, it also necessitates revealing the intricate machinations behind what seemed to be his final stand.
Who Else Knows That John Is Alive?
As I delve back into the world of John Wick, it’s clear that the whisperings of my return won’t remain hidden for long. The initial installment ignited when I emerged from retirement, seeking vengeance for the loss of my beloved dog. With my resurrection creating ripples, it’s only a matter of time before my first foe is dispatched and news of my comeback sweeps through the underworld, thrusting me headlong back into conflict with the High Table. Consequently, John Wick: Chapter 5 must address who among this secretive society has knowledge or even suspects that John Wick has risen from the dead. Already, there are several characters who will either have learned about my survival or be among the first to hear the rumors.
Based on the hypothesis that John’s death was staged, Caine, Winston, and the Bowery King are the primary suspects who may already know that John is still alive. John would probably want to keep his survival hidden for as long as feasible, meaning he would maintain a small, secretive group of individuals privy to this information. However, as John embarks on his new endeavor, he might recruit additional allies. Potential candidates who could learn about John’s reappearance before the secret is fully revealed include Anjelica Huston’s character The Director, Aurelio (John Leguizamo), the main character Eve Macarro from Ballerina (Ana de Armas), Sofia (Halle Berry), and Katia Jovonovich (Natalia Tena) from the Ruska Roma, who is also John’s adopted sister.
What Is John’s Plan for Dealing With the High Table?
Since retiring, John Wick has been on a mission to free himself from the authority of the High Table, a struggle that seems to keep drawing him back into a realm he yearns to leave behind. In “John Wick: Chapter 4,” John took an extraordinary step by assassinating the individual who holds the highest position in the High Table (George Georgiou). He then went to great lengths to arrange a duel as per traditional High Table rules, with the hope of finally breaking free from their control. As John re-enters the fray in “John Wick: Chapter 5,” one can’t help but speculate about his fresh strategy for dealing with the High Table and the significant confrontation that is likely to follow.
Chapter 5 needs to address is what comes next? What are steps two through ten in this intricate game of cat and mouse with the High Table? The anticipation is palpable!
Is John Going to Help Caine Against Akira?
In the fourth installment of “John Wick,” Caine, an old friend of John’s, found himself in a precarious predicament reminiscent of the legendary Baba Yaga, as he was compelled by Marquis Vincent Bisset de Gramont of the High Table to pursue John. The safety of his daughter hung in the balance, which ultimately led Caine to take the life of one of John’s associates, Shimazu Koji, the manager of the Osaka Continental. This tragic event left Koji’s daughter, Akira, filled with a desire for revenge against the blind assassin. In the end-credits scene of “John Wick: Chapter 4,” Akira was seen brandishing a weapon as she approached Caine, suggesting that their confrontation is imminent. As such, “John Wick: Chapter 5” may delve into the extent of John’s involvement in this looming showdown between Caine and Akira.
In a different phrasing, we find that Akira harbored intense resentment towards John, vocally scolding him for the death of her father. However, her animosity towards Caine is more straightforward as he was the one who killed Shimazu. Despite spending most of John Wick: Chapter 4 in combat, John and Caine parted ways on amicable terms, fueling speculation that Caine may have helped John stage his death. Given this scenario, it’s plausible that John might try to reconcile Caine with Akira, as he understands that Caine was compelled to fight him to protect his own daughter. This could potentially lead to a reconciliation between Caine and Akira. Although the confrontation between Caine and Akira is expected to be central in Donnie Yen’s Caine spin-off, John Wick: Chapter 5 can still touch upon this topic, laying the groundwork for John to pursue peace between Caine and Akira and potentially enlist her as an ally in his ongoing battle against the High Table.
What Is John Wick’s Endgame?
Over the course of four films, I’ve been relentlessly pursuing freedom from the High Table while also seeking vengeance against them. The sheer effort it takes to evade them speaks volumes about their power. If my death was indeed a ruse, it seems I had found the ideal escape route, allowing me to vanish from their sight forever and live out my remaining days as a free man. However, the fact that John Wick: Chapter 5 is in production suggests that my confrontations with the High Table are far from over, leaving me to wonder about the ultimate purpose of my struggle.
It’s clear that John Wick seeks freedom from the High Table, but achieving this goal won’t be easy given his history of conflicts with them. The High Table is deeply ingrained in the John Wick universe, making it challenging for just one man like John Wick to dismantle it. John Wick may aim to destroy the High Table entirely, but realistically, he will likely need help from allies such as Caine, Winston, the Bowery King, and others in a battle that could be as formidable as taking on the High Table itself. The details of John Wick’s strategy and how he plans to execute it are significant unanswered questions surrounding the return of the Baba Yaga, and resolving these will be crucial for John Wick: Chapter 5.
From the World Of John Wick: Ballerina will be released in theaters on June 6th.
