In the latest release of “Captain America: Brave New World,” fans are introduced to fresh characters like Shira Haas as Ruth Bat-Seraph and Giancarlo Esposito as Seth Voelker / Sidewinder. But what truly excites the audience is the reappearance of familiar faces, such as Tim Blake Nelson returning as Samuel Sterns, last seen in 2008’s “The Incredible Hulk,” and Harrison Ford stepping into the shoes of the late William Hurt as Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross. Notably, Ross takes on a significant role from the comics, transforming into the Red Hulk in a climactic fight against Anthony Mackie’s Captain America.
WARNING: Spoilers below for Captain America: Brave New World
Indeed, viewers familiar with the film will recognize it concludes with Ross reverting to his normal human form and being locked up at the Raft. During this time, he reconnects with his daughter Betty Ross (Liv Tyler), who plays a role in restoring his humanity. It’s evident that President Ross won’t be transforming into the Red Hulk in upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe stories. However, one might wonder: Are there any other characters who could take on this role instead?
Robert Maverick
In the comic books, Robert Maverick is a four-star general who was selected by the Avengers Idea Mechanics (previously a supervillain group called Advanced Idea Mechanics, or A.I.M.) for an experiment that transformed him into the Red Hulk. However, unlike the original Hulk, whose transformations are triggered by gamma radiation, Maverick uses a sophisticated device called the Hulk Plug-In to activate his transformation for just one hour at a time. This allows him greater control over the rage monster within him.
Though Maverick hasn’t made his MCU debut yet, it’s plausible they introduce him as a military commander involved in covert operations. Given A.I.M.’s presence in “Iron Man 3”, it’s not far-fetched to imagine them reappearing, but this time functioning as allies to the Avengers.
Carl Creel
Carl Creel, also known as the Abomination, has been one of the Hulk’s longest-standing adversaries. Initially, his primary power lay in absorbing the characteristics of any material he comes into contact with, making him a formidable and risky opponent. Upon exposure to gamma radiation, he transformed into a massive creature resembling the Hulk, dubbed Red Dog. Despite this transformation, Creel has maintained his villainous nature but later opted to switch sides and became a member of the Canadian superhero team Gamma Flight.
In the series “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”, Carl Creel was initially introduced, but his role within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is questionable at most. However, this uncertainty doesn’t prevent Marvel Studios from potentially recasting Carl Creel with the same actor or starting fresh by introducing a new version of the character in future projects.
Betty Ross
Indeed, you’re correct. Betty Ross, once Bruce Banner’s romantic interest, isn’t an exception when it comes to unleashing the Hulk within those close to him. Given this pattern, it’s logical that she too would have her moment. However, being the daughter of Thunderbolt Ross, she transforms into a red version instead, symbolizing her familial connection. But what sets Betty apart is her subsequent transformation – she was brainwashed into becoming a malevolent, destructive form known as Harpy, with an eerie, demonic appearance.
With Betty returning, it’s just a question of when Marvel Studios decides to subject her to gamma radiation; there have been whispers about a World War Hulk film for quite some time now, and that could present an ideal opportunity for her debut. However, the character of Harpy might be too aggressive for Disney’s family-friendly standards.
Clayton Cortez
Artist Greg Pak and Mike Deodato Jr. fashioned the character Clayton Cortez, subjected to experiments that granted him superhuman capabilities, transforming him into Weapon H. Besides boasting the size and strength of the Hulk, Weapon H also inherited Wolverine’s claws and healing factor, along with the powers of various mutants. To make matters even more perilous, it was later discovered that Weapon H possessed a gamma switch ability, enabling him to access the abilities of other Hulks, such as growing a set of demonic wings.
Wolverine has now joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe, implying that his unique genetic makeup could potentially fall into the wrong hands for malicious use. Furthermore, since adamantium is in play, it’s only a matter of time before the Weapon X program reappears on the scene.
Bruce Banner
As you might have gathered, it’s Bruce Banner, the initial Hulk, who could potentially transform into Red Hulk. In the comics, there’s another Hulk persona within Bruce’s mind known as Joe Fixit, who is gray rather than green and demonstrates a high level of intelligence, even being cunningly manipulative at times. During the chilling Immortal Hulk comic book series, Joe Fixit comes into contact with cosmic energy from a terrifying realm called the Below-Place, significantly boosting his physical strength.
The narrative could use a slight simplification if Marvel Studios were to ever produce it, but it’s a fascinating tale, one that fans would be thrilled to see on the big screen – particularly the Joe Fixit version of the Hulk. And the prospect of him transforming into Red Hulk? That’d be nothing short of extraordinary, Marvel Studios. Let’s make it happen!
