5 Exciting Star Wars Games in Development After Battlefront 3’s Disappointment!

It appears that Electronic Arts (EA) isn’t planning on releasing Star Wars: Battlefront 3 at this time, but five other exciting Star Wars video games are currently in production. The last installment of the Battlefront series was launched in 2017 and faced criticism initially for its controversial loot box micro-transactions and lackluster single-player mode. However, the game saw significant improvements following its release, which has led to requests for a third edition that might remain unanswered, as other Star Wars games continue their development.

Over the past few years, fans have been immersed in a variety of captivating adventures set in a galaxy far, far away, including titles like “Jedi: Survivor”, “Outlaws”, and “LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga”. These games offer an expansive exploration of the Star Wars universe through multiple characters, locations, narratives, and gameplay options.

Zero Company

In January 2022, the strategy game titled “Bit Reactor” was unveiled, along with “Jedi: Survivor” and a first-person shooter from Respawn. However, that particular shooter was later scrapped, but now it has been revealed as “Star Wars: Zero Company”.

The game’s narrative unfolds during the Clone Wars, featuring a “strategic turn-based battle campaign immersed in an engaging Star Wars plot.

The Zero Team, composed of five soldiers hailing from various corners of the cosmos (including astromechs and Jedi), is commanded by former disgraced Republic Officer Hawks. This team will engage in a clandestine battle, referred to as “the conflict hidden within the larger war,” with the objective of thwarting a looming danger that could potentially devastate the entire galaxy if it’s not stopped.

In the year 2026, players can look forward to diving into the world of “Zero Company,” featuring an unusual yet adaptable cast of characters, intricate strategic gameplay, and the opportunity to play it on PC, Xbox Series X/S, and PlayStation 5.

Jedi 3

Respawn achieved significant triumph with the games “Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order” and “Star Wars Jedi: Survivor”, allowing players to command Cameron Monaghan’s character Cal Kestis. Not too shocking, it is known that Respawn is developing “Star Wars Jedi 3”, but specifics about the third installment are currently sparse.

In the spirit of staying true to its roots, Jedi 3 should adopt a comparable gameplay structure as its predecessors, featuring numerous worlds to delve into and an engrossing storyline that binds them together. The narrative surrounding Cal Kestis has become even more captivating, given his discovery of a secret Jedi refuge, blossoming romance with Merrin, and his growing mastery over the dark side powers.

Based on the latest predictions, it’s anticipated that “Star Wars Jedi 3” might hit the shelves in the year 2027, likely continuing its availability on PlayStation, Xbox, and personal computers.

Eclipse

In December 2021, the developers of Detroit: Become Human unveiled Star Wars: Eclipse with a breathtaking cinematic trailer. This marks the initial entry in the Star Wars series to be set within the High Republic era.

The action-adventure you’re about to embark on is set in uncharted regions of the Outer Rim, where you’ll encounter fresh species and unexplored planets in your journey.

Players will engage with the game “Eclipse” by controlling various characters, each possessing unique traits such as personality, motivations, and consequences for the storyline. Concurrently, the decisions made by players, while playing these characters, will guide them through a complex and intricate narrative in the High Republic, which presents numerous branches and possibilities.

Information about the release of Quantic Dream’s upcoming game, Eclipse, has been limited, but a 2022 report indicated that it might not be released until as late as 2027 or 2028. It is anticipated that the game will be available on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox platforms. Given that Eclipse is still several years off, one can’t help but speculate whether it may instead debut on the next-generation consoles.

Knights of the Old Republic Remake

Back in September 2021, Aspyr Media unveiled plans for a remake of the popular game “Knights of the Old Republic”. However, since that announcement, the path has been quite turbulent. At one point, there were concerns that this remake might be scrapped altogether due to delays, with its initial 2022 release date now projected to be long after 2025.

As a movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share some good news with fellow fans. In an interview with IGN back in April 2024, Saber Interactive’s CEO, Matthew Karch, assured us that the game we all love is thriving and in great shape. He also mentioned that the dedicated team is tirelessly working to surpass our expectations, ensuring a fantastic gaming experience for everyone!

In 2023, Bioware launched a role-playing game named KOTOR, set approximately 4000 years prior to the Skywalker saga. This beloved title casts players as a customizable character and Jedi, fighting against Darth Malak who has mobilized a Sith fleet threatening the Galactic Republic, which must be defended.

It appears the remake of KOTOR (Knights of the Old Republic) will debut only on PlayStation 5 and PC platforms; however, determining an exact launch date remains challenging due to the lack of recent announcements.

Amy Henning’s Mystery Game

Previously, Amy Hennig, the creative director of Uncharted, had been working on a game called “Project Ragtag” at Visceral Games under EA. This was intended to be a grand heist game set within the Star Wars universe, but unfortunately, this project was terminated in 2017.

After her departure, Amy Hennig shifted to Skydance New Media and is currently working on creating an “action-packed adventure game with a compelling narrative,” set within the Star Wars universe, featuring its own unique narrative.

According to certain sources, it’s been suggested that the upcoming Skydance game, codenamed “Project Waldron,” is expected to take place during the Galactic Civil War and serves as a reboot of the previously announced project known as “Project Ragtag.

2026 will see Skydance New Media launching the much-anticipated game, Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra, which has been postponed for a while. Following this release, focus is likely to shift towards “Project Waldron” within Skydance’s plans, suggesting that players may have to wait a few more years before they can get their hands on this intriguing game globally.

Here’s Why Battlefront 3 Will Never Happen

Back in November of 2021, I learned from trusted source Tom Henderson that DICE had pitched Battlefront 3 to Electronic Arts (EA), but the project was unfortunately shelved due to high licensing costs. As he put it, these expenses meant that it would require a 20% increase in sales just to generate the same revenue, leading to the cancellation of Battlefront 3 plans.

It seems DICE may have proposed “Battlefront 3” as their next major venture following the release of “Battlefield 2042” in 2021. However, this plan shifted into a collaboration with three other Electronic Arts studios on the unnamed upcoming installment within the “Battlefield” series, scheduled for release in 2026.

Initially, Electronic Arts (EA) held exclusive rights for Star Wars video games. However, it appears that EA might be reducing its involvement with the franchise, possibly due to high licensing costs. Notably, only the two Respawn Entertainment games mentioned are from EA’s portfolio. Additionally, EA seems to be stepping away from licensed properties in general, as they recently scrapped a planned Black Panther game.

DICE might attempt to propose Battlefront 3 again once they finish their Battlefield projects, but it seems rather improbable that this effort would be any more successful than before. Regrettably, despite a popular campaign, the likelihood of Battlefront 3 coming into existence seems uncertain, unless there are significant changes in the situation.

2024 saw significant changes and downsizing at EA, as reported by IGN, resulting in the termination of Respawn’s Star Wars First-Person Shooter (FPS) project. The aborted game was rumored to be a shooter focused on the character from The Mandalorian, potentially offering a unique experience distinct from Battlefront, and possibly addressing the void left in the Star Wars FPS genre.
