5 Harry Potter Characters the HBO Reboot Should Cut for Good

In Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings films not being present, the Harry Potter movies would be widely recognized as the benchmark for fantasy novel adaptations. They excel at creating a vivid Wizarding World, an accomplishment made all the more impressive by its expansive scope. The characters are well-developed from the outset, with Harry Potter’s burden clearly evident right from the beginning. Luckily for him, he has a strong support system, including friends who aid him in his quest. Among these allies, Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger, Cedric Diggory, Remus Lupin, and Mad-Eye Moody stand out as particularly memorable.

Although the Harry Potter films boast an array of captivating characters, they also contain some vexing personalities. To put it frankly, there are certain characters whose flaws seem irreparable; the forthcoming HBO remake might find it more beneficial to bypass these characters entirely.

1) Romilda Vane

In Harry Potter, the narrative follows a cast of characters as they mature from children to adults, and romantic feelings and first loves play significant roles. Most of these teenage romances are heartwarming, but there’s one character who crosses the line: Romilda Vane.

In “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince,” Romilda is a character who’s a year younger than Harry. Her infatuation with him, fueled by his role as the “Chosen One,” often leads her to attempt slipping him love potions. However, it’s Ron who unintentionally consumes these potions instead. Her presence in the story is minimal, and she doesn’t significantly contribute to the plot, making her a potential character that could be trimmed from the narrative.

2) Vincent Crabbe

In the initial Harry Potter films, Draco Malfoy is portrayed as a common bully, targeting Harry Potter and his companions due to their achievements which he resents. However, he doesn’t act alone; his accomplices, Gregory Goyle and Vincent Crabbe, join him in these unjust actions.

Neither character leaves a significant mark, and ultimately, they aren’t vastly dissimilar. However, it’s simpler to eliminate Crabbe because he doesn’t complete the entire series due to off-screen problems that prevented Jamie Waylett from appearing in the last two films. His part was taken over by Blaise Zabili, who might be a more suitable choice for HBO’s adaptation.

2. Simplified Version: The characters don’t make much of an impression and aren’t very distinct. Crabbe is easier to dismiss because he only appears in most of the films due to off-set problems affecting actor Jamie Waylett. His role was taken over by Blaise Zabili, who could be a better fit for HBO’s version.

3. Informal Version: Neither character stands out much, and honestly, they’re not all that unique. Getting rid of Crabbe is simpler because he doesn’t finish the series due to backstage issues preventing Jamie Waylett from appearing in the final films. His role was taken over by Blaise Zabili, who might be a better match for HBO’s take.

3) Percy Weasley

The Weasley clan boasts a vibrant assortment of personalities, with Fred and George standing out as the dynamic duo who invariably liven up any gathering. It’s worth noting that their absent brother, Charlie, may not have appeared on screen, but his extraordinary life played a significant role in shaping the narrative. Unfortunately, Percy Weasley tends to be rather sobering and dull.

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but notice that though Percy Weasley held the prestigious position of Head Boy at Hogwarts, he didn’t seem to lend a hand when Ron and his friends needed it most during their crucial moments. If the show decides not to delve deep into Percy’s personal journey regarding his skepticism towards Harry’s tales about Voldemort, it might be more effective to exclude him from the plotline for a smoother narrative flow.

4) Moaning Myrtle

Among all the characters listed, Moaning Myrtle stands out as crucial to the narrative of Harry Potter, offering key insights about the Chamber of Secrets and providing assistance during Harry’s quandary in the Triwizard Tournament. However, it should be noted that she can be quite bothersome and somewhat eerie.

Whenever Harry’s present, Myrtle tends to flirt excessively, making him uneasy as he gathers information. This behavior is a key aspect of her character, since she aims to keep people away from her bathroom. However, it doesn’t make these scenes any more pleasant to watch. There are alternative ways for Harry to gather information without having to deal with the clingy ghost.

5) Grawp

Hagrid boasts a captivating past since he’s a mix of human and giant. His colossal stature often leaves people at Hogwarts, including Draco, feeling intimidated. However, it’s his half-brother, Grawp – a true giant – who truly towers over him in size.

In the novel “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix,” Grawp unexpectedly appears, contributing primarily to the removal of Dolores Umbridge in the Forbidden Forest. This departure of the villain from Hogwarts is quite fulfilling, but given limited television budgets, it’s more economical to minimize the use of Computer-Generated Imagery (CGI) for less significant characters like Grawp.
