5 Hidden DC Characters You Must Discover Now

DC Comics boasts an impressive roster of globally recognized characters such as Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and the Flash, who are not confined to their original superhero or comic book niches but are widely known across the globe. However, with a vast array of remarkable characters at its disposal, it’s understandable that some less-famous names may sometimes get overlooked. After all, for the stars to shine brightly, there must be supporting characters in the background.

Even though these less-known characters may not be widely recognized, it doesn’t make them any less intriguing or impressive than their more famous counterparts. In fact, several of these characters truly warrant their own fanbase. Let’s explore five such characters that are relatively unknown yet highly deserving.

1) Ragman

Among all the characters on this list, Ragman is undeniably my top pick due to his incredible powers. The Suit of Souls, which Rory Regan now possesses after his father was tragically murdered by criminals, dates back to the 16th Century and was originally sewn together by the same craftsmen who created the Prague Golem. Each piece of fabric in the Suit represents a soul it has consumed, with the Suit yearning for more from those who have escaped justice. Ragman can harness power from these wicked souls, granting him extraordinary physical abilities and even their unique skills and memories. The souls provide their energy until they atone for their heinous deeds, upon which they are set free to move on to the afterlife. Overall, Ragman is a fascinating character, and I believe he would shine in his own supernatural DC Comics series.

2) Monkey Prince

As Marcus Shugel-Shen, also known as The Monkey Prince, I find myself in an extraordinary position – a clone/son of the legendary Monkey King, Sun Wukong. The Monkey King was imprisoned by Darkseid in the Phantom Zone, and centuries later, through a portal ripped open by the Superman foe Ultra-Humanite, I entered the world, discovered by my future adoptive parents, Laura and Winston. Life had already become intricate enough with my family ties, but it turns out they’re career henchpeople for villains nationwide, and my mother is the daughter of Ultra-Humanite herself!

I possess all the powers of my revered father – immense strength, an immortal healing factor, and cloning abilities. I’m just learning to master these extraordinary gifts. My unique skillset and cast of characters promise a thrilling adventure, and I eagerly await the opportunity to headline another series in the future.

3) Bronze Tiger

Ben Turner, often overlooked, holds a prominent place among the most skilled hand-to-hand fighters within the DC Universe. Raised in Central City, his life took a dramatic turn when a burglar invaded his home at the age of ten, resulting in him fatally defending his parents with a kitchen knife. This tragic event stirred a deep rage within him, prompting him to immerse himself in martial arts to channel and hone his abilities. His dedication led him to become a fighting legend on par with renowned figures like Black Canary and Lady Shiva. To put it simply, Bronze Tiger has even managed to outmatch Batman in fair, one-on-one combat, an achievement that speaks volumes about his prowess. In essence, such feats secure his place among the elite characters worthy of admiration.

4) Amethyst, Princess of Gemworld

Following the tragic demise of her parents at the hands of her sworn enemy Dark Opal, Princess Amethyst is secretly relocated to Earth and taken in by a loving human family, who rename her Amy Winston. On reaching her 13th birthday, Amethyst finds herself drawn back to the magical realm of Gemworld where she reclaims her royal status and becomes an exceptional protector. To put it plainly, Amethyst is quite remarkable. Over time, she has been a valued member of various superhero teams such as Young Justice and Justice League Dark, roles that her abilities more than justify. At the height of her powers, Amethyst has stood shoulder-to-shoulder with formidable figures like Spectre and Doctor Fate, adversaries I would not want to face under any circumstances. In the near future, she will be sharing the limelight with Starfire in the animated series of the Tamaranean, a recognition she truly deserves.

5) Ethan Harrow

Ethan Harrow stands out on this list because unlike others, he’s not a superhero; instead, he’s a troubled character with a dark past. As a bullied teenager, he assisted his friend Brandon in pulling off a school shooting hoax, but things took a tragic turn when Brandon used real bullets instead of blanks. In an attempt to prevent harm, Ethan unintentionally caused Brandon’s death by tapping into his psychic abilities. Consequently, Ethan was imprisoned for fifty years, and the DC Focus series Hard Time chronicles his life behind bars. Despite his troubled background, it is Ethan’s potential suitability for the Suicide Squad that makes him a compelling character. He appears to be the ideal candidate for recruitment, given his superpowered status, desperate situation, and lack of control like villains such as Parasite or Silver Swan. With immense storytelling potential, introducing Ethan into the mainline DC Universe could pave the way for exciting new comic book stories.
