Gearbox Software is set to unveil “Borderlands 4” on September 12, 2025. Having had close to five years to consider fan feedback about “Borderlands 3”, which was commercially and critically successful but faced criticism for its lackluster humor and tough-to-defeat enemy designs, the team has been working diligently. In addition, they introduced “Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands”, a spin-off from the main “Borderlands” series that didn’t achieve the same level of sales or reviews, but was lauded for its enhanced humor and gameplay mechanics. This positive response gives optimism to fans eagerly anticipating improvements in “Borderlands 4”. Here are some changes we hope to see in the upcoming sequel.
Don’t Let the Tone Swing Too Far
Many might advise Gearbox Entertainment to tone down the comedy, as they’ve stated that Borderlands 4 will be the darkest game in the series yet. However, humor is a significant aspect of the Borderlands franchise and has been genuinely amusing in previous installments. While it can sometimes miss the mark, abandoning what made the series beloved would be a misstep.
Instead of maintaining the same level of intensity as Borderlands 3, Gearbox should significantly scale back the action while avoiding the extreme seriousness that a game might have. Achieving this balance could be challenging for a team that’s been known for their lowbrow humor, but it’s a crucial adjustment they need to make in refining their formula.
Better Enemy Design
It’s been pointed out that the Borderlands series tends to use “tough-to-kill” enemies instead of interesting encounters. While Borderlands 3 introduced stages for boss battles, the series should reconsider its overall enemy design to maintain player engagement.
To stay competitive, Borderlands 4 should upgrade its enemy designs because other games are continually advancing. Repeating a familiar attack pattern for several minutes might have seemed challenging in the past, but now it’s necessary to progress with the gaming industry. It’s high time that Borderlands took this step forward as well.
Update the Quest Design
Moving on from our previous discussion, let’s consider a shift in focus for the Borderlands series. While fetch quests might still be part of the game, we’re more inclined towards major story-driven missions and intriguing side quests that demonstrate creativity. Essentially, we aim to make the series less reminiscent of 2009.
We’ve found that the quest design in Borderlands has had a touch of MMO-style lightness, but we’re eagerly anticipating that Borderlands 4 will offer us a bit more substance to engage with. It doesn’t have to be a full transformation of how Borderlands operates, we just hope it delivers something new and exciting in the fourth main game of this series when it arrives in 2025.
Scale Back the Vehicles
frankly speaking, the cars in Borderlands have never been ideal; they can work fine but are usually frustrating to handle and downright terrible for combat. It’s high time we minimize their use. Gearbox may not eliminate them entirely (as demonstrated in trailers), but it would be great if they could focus on using them less frequently.
We’re fine with smaller game worlds for Borderlands as long as it leads to more focused content. Excessive world expansion isn’t necessary for this series. Instead, Gearbox could concentrate on creating unique and content-rich areas. Traveling through the map has never been engaging, so we’d rather have a reduced map size if it means fewer transportation hassles.
Less (But More Unique) Guns
As a die-hard fan, I find myself daring to suggest something unconventional about the upcoming Borderlands 4: perhaps we could use fewer weapons. Yes, you heard it right! While the series is renowned for its “87 bazillion” firearms, managing an overflowing inventory has always been a challenge.
Rather than insisting on a greater quantity of items, it would be more beneficial for Gearbox to prioritize improving the quality. This doesn’t always translate to an increase in Legendary weapons dropped, as indicated by their decision after player feedback in Borderlands 3. Instead, we hope that in Borderlands 4, they might reduce the overall number of weapons and focus on crafting guns that drastically alter your gameplay style. Fortunately, the new modular system in the algorithm could lead to incredibly potent weapons, even if we don’t manage to lower the total count of guns.
The genuine strength lies in using an exceptional weapon, and while it’s enjoyable to watch the figures rise, discovering something that completely alters your gaming approach is what makes Borderlands truly exceptional. Please, Gearbox, give us more of those unique experiences!
