As a die-hard Marvel fan who has witnessed the evolution of these iconic characters since their inception, I firmly believe that it’s high time for some beloved heroes to take center stage in their own solo adventures.
Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie, T’Challa’s trusted general Okoye, and Bruce Banner/the Hulk are long overdue for a spinoff, each with unique stories that delve deeper into their personal lives and the challenges they face as protectors of Earth.
Tessa Thompson has brought Valkyne’s complex character to life in the MCU, and a solo project would allow us to explore her journey as she grapples with her responsibilities as the ruler of New Asgard while maintaining her duty to the Avengers. The potential for world-building is immense, given the rich history and mythology of Asgard.
Danai Gurira’s portrayal of Okoye has been nothing short of phenomenal, and a spinoff would offer an opportunity to delve deeper into her life as a leader within Wakanda’s Dora Milaje, following her resignation from the group in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.”
Lastly, Mark Ruffalo has embodied Bruce Banner/the Hulk for over a decade now, and it’s time for him to lead his own solo adventure. With so many connections across the MCU, there are endless possibilities for who he could encounter in a spinoff, making it an exciting prospect for both fans and the actor himself.
And just imagine, if these characters teamed up for an epic crossover event? Talk about a dream come true! It would be like the ultimate fan-fiction come to life!
In simpler terms, when it comes to upcoming projects based on the Marvel Universe, there are lots of great choices. The show “Agatha All Along,” which was well-received in 2024, built upon the success of “WandaVision” and focused on Kathryn Hahn’s character, Agatha Harkness. This Disney+ series showed that a spinoff focusing on a previously underused character can be very successful, and it might even lead to more spinoffs. There are many other characters within the Marvel Universe who could greatly benefit from their own movie or show. These include heroes, anti-heroes, villains, and cosmic beings spread throughout the franchise. Among these secondary characters, there are five that stand out as particularly promising candidates for their own spinoff.
Valkyrie
Tessa Thompson first introduced her character, Valkyrie, in Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film “Thor: Ragnarok” back in 2017. Since then, she’s appeared in “Avengers: Endgame” (2019), “Thor: Love and Thunder” (2022), and had a brief role in “The Marvels” (2023). One of the most engaging supporting character journeys in MCU is Valkyrie’s transformation from a humble scavenger on Sakaar to the ruler of New Asgard.
Valkyrie has primarily been a supporting character until now, but Thompson’s talent for conveying the heavy emotional burden of her character’s losses in battle, combined with the distinctive humor that is characteristic of Taika Waititi’s Thor movies, makes her an excellent choice for a standalone movie. Moreover, Valkyrie’s unresolved romantic storyline from Thor: Love and Thunder hints at potential development in future projects.
Rio Vidal/Death
As a movie critic, I found myself utterly captivated by “Agatha All Along,” particularly the mesmerizing portrayal of Aubrey Plaza’s character, Rio Vidal – or Death, as she is known in this enchanting world. Unlike any other Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) character, Rio’s arc is a unique tapestry that deserves to be unraveled further.
Initially a side character in the comics, Rio would undoubtedly shine as a lead in the MCU, much like Kathryn Hahn’s Agatha did. However, one aspect of “Agatha All Along” that could have been more fully realized is the unexplored backstory and relationship between Agatha and Rio.
To delve deeper into their fascinating dynamic, a Rio-centric spinoff seems like an ideal solution. Such a series could explore how Death, the embodiment of mortality, fell in love with a mortal witch like Agatha, shed light on the practicalities of their dual roles as collector of souls and lover, and perhaps confirm or debunk theories that they raised Agatha’s son together. This spinoff would not only satisfy fans but also enrich the tapestry of the MCU with a fresh perspective on love, loss, and the nature of death itself.
The role of Death in the series seems tailor-made for Plaza, given her exceptional acting chemistry with Hahn and her ability to seamlessly blend humorous dialogue typical of Rio with heartfelt emotions linked to her past with Agatha. The concept of Death as an ancient cosmic entity opens up numerous potential storylines for a spinoff. The success of “WandaVision” and “Agatha All Along,” which have boosted Jac Schaeffer’s Marvel Cinematic Universe realm, suggests that the franchise could further capitalize on this by developing a spinoff centered around Plaza’s character.
Yelena Belova
In 2021’s “Black Widow”, Florence Pugh made her entrance as Yelena Belova, the younger adopted sibling of the deceased Natasha Romanoff. Following her past as a Red Room assassin, Yelena appeared in the Disney+ series “Hawkeye” alongside Hailee Steinfeld’s Kate Bishop and Jeremy Renner’s Clint Barton. Her harrowing history as a mind-controlled child killer, coupled with her sorrow over Natasha’s death during The Blip, has painted Yelena as one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s most tragic figures. However, her skill in hand-to-hand combat and biting wit add layers to her character, making her a delight to watch on screen. With an actress as gifted as Oscar-nominated Pugh bringing Yelena to life, it would be a mistake for Marvel not to capitalize on her versatility, as she can switch seamlessly between delivering humor and evoking tears from the audience.
In the upcoming movie Thunderbolts*, Yelena will play a leading role, but it’s important to note that the film isn’t exactly a standalone sequel as Yelena (portrayed by Pugh) is part of an ensemble that includes Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes, David Harbour’s Red Guardian, Hannah John-Kamen’s Ghost, Wyatt Russell’s John Walker, and Olga Kurylenko’s Taskmaster. Thunderbolts* is scheduled for release in May 2025, leaving Yelena’s future within the MCU uncertain at present. However, there may be potential for a spinoff focusing on her character that doesn’t involve team-ups.
Okoye
It was speculated that Danai Gurira’s character Okoye, a fierce and loyal warrior who was once part of Wakanda’s Dora Milaje and is now with the Midnight Angels, would have her own spinoff series. However, it seems this project has not come to fruition. Her backstory, particularly after her emotional departure from the Dora Milaje, could have made an excellent basis for a standalone series. Gurira will reprise her role as Okoye in the upcoming “Eyes of Wakanda” animated miniseries, but she will only appear as a secondary character.
A standalone Okoye series could offer a chance to reintroduce and expand upon characters like Michaela Coel’s Aneka and Florence Kasumba’s Ayo, and introduce new members of Wakanda’s top-tier military. Danai Gurira has beautifully portrayed Okoye’s sorrow, resilience, and fortitude in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for years, making her an ideal choice to spearhead future projects. Okoye’s personal tale could also function as a compelling prelude for the upcoming Black Panther 3.
Bruce Banner/Hulk
In 2012’s “The Avengers”, Mark Ruffalo stepped into the shoes previously filled by Edward Norton as Bruce Banner (aka The Hulk). This was a shift from Norton’s portrayal in “The Incredible Hulk” back in 2008. Although Norton’s film technically launched a solo Hulk project within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Ruffalo’s interpretation of Banner is ripe for his own standalone adventure. With over a decade under his belt playing the MCU’s Hulk across nine live-action productions, it’s high time for Ruffalo to spearhead a spinoff, potentially featuring other characters from the Marvel Universe as well. Given Banner’s extensive network of connections as a powerful Avenger, there are numerous possibilities for who could join him in this new venture.
