What makes fictional tales special is that they’re not bound by the same constraints as real-world events. Fiction serves as a creative outlet where facts aren’t essential. These stories can convey deep emotional insights about reality, but they don’t have to adhere to physical laws or scientific plausibility. Take Superman, for instance, who is essentially a character that shouldn’t exist according to our understanding of physics. In the real world, someone of his size wouldn’t be able to lift the amount of weight he does, and every time he flies, he’s defying gravity. This makes him a “super” man in a figurative sense.
The captivating essence of Superman lies in his ability to perform feats as vast as our imagination allows. He embodies the concept of the impossible man, underscoring humanity’s infinite creativity and boundless potential. Despite recognizing the distinction between fiction and reality, we cannot help but ponder over aspects of Superman that seem illogical or contradictory within our scientific understanding. This exploration is not meant as criticism of the character, but rather a thoughtful examination of the elements of Superman that challenge everything we believe about the physical world.
1) No One Can Fly Like That
There are various methods for something to fly, like wings and jet engines. But Superman’s flying ability doesn’t follow these rules. He seems to just think about it and hover in the air without any extra help. This means he can defy gravity and float above cities like Metropolis effortlessly. While there isn’t real science behind this, some stories suggest that Superman has special powers or an invisible energy field around him that lets him do amazing things.
2) Superman Has an Impossible Grip on Heavy Objects
In simpler terms, it’s questionable how Superman possesses such extraordinary strength, but what really strains belief is his ability to maintain a firm grasp and balance, which are crucial even for the strongest among us when lifting heavy objects. Lifting a car with just your hand isn’t feasible without a solid grip or balance to prevent it from toppling over. Superman’s feat of holding up collapsing buildings would be impossible, not only because of his strength but also due to the structures crumbling around him unless he’s strategically bracing their stable points. To explain these seemingly implausible feats, there’s a theoretical energy field, or ‘aura,’ surrounding Superman that extends to whatever he touches, making those objects as durable as he is. This way, the things he comes into contact with essentially become an extension of himself, enabling him to hold onto them without them disintegrating.
3) Aliens Wouldn’t Look Like Us (At Least Theoretically)
On Earth, ourselves and other living organisms have taken on our current forms due to a process called evolution, which adapted us to thrive in this particular planet’s environment. Our limbs, organs, and facial features are the outcomes of what was necessary for life here. Although we haven’t encountered extraterrestrial life yet, it’s theoretically unlikely that aliens would resemble us exactly, given the low probability of another planet being identical to Earth, and an even lower chance of them evolving like us. Essentially, we are the product of fortunate accidents that have led to our development as intelligent beings with complex thoughts. The idea of aliens akin to Superman or Kryptonians seems almost improbable.
4) Kryptonians Should’ve Just All Lived Under a Yellow Sun
Superman was sent to Earth because he appeared human and the energy from a yellow star would give him extraordinary abilities. Generally, Kryptonians don’t have these powers. However, if it were widely known that the yellow sun’s effects on Kryptonians were so powerful, wouldn’t Krypton find another planet with a similar star to live on?
In simpler terms, one theory tries to make sense of this scenario by suggesting that there was no nearby planet with a yellow sun similar to Krypton’s. An alternate idea is that the majority of Kryptonians were unaware of the effects of a yellow sun, but somehow Jor-El had this knowledge. Given that someone like Jor-El understood the significance of a yellow sun, it’s reasonable to assume that finding a planet with one would have been crucial for the survival of Krypton.
5) His Random Powers are Nonsense
Previously stated, whatever abilities a writer might conceive, Superman possesses them. This notion was particularly valid during the Golden and Silver Age of comic books, where creators frequently invented new powers for Superman to suit the storyline. Although his super strength, flight, durability, speed, heightened senses, and heat vision are fundamental traits, creators often incorporated additional abilities such as hypnosis or memory-erasing kisses into his repertoire. Essentially, the only restrictions were a writer’s creativity, so if they could imagine it, Superman would find a way to acquire these powers.
In older Superman comics, one of the most implausible abilities he exhibited was the capacity to produce tiny replicas of himself from his hands. These miniature Supermen possessed the same powers as their creator. This power not only defies logic, but the comic fails to provide an explanation for its workings. The Superman cloning ability is seldom, if ever, mentioned again, and rightly so; it’s quite absurd. However, these extraordinary abilities underscore Superman’s boundless potential and serve as a symbol of creativity in the character.
