Few viewers caught Anthony Mackie and Morena Baccarin’s film “Elevation” when it was released in late 2024, but now that it’s streaming on Max, more people are discovering it. With renewed interest in the movie, what other films pair well with it? There are several possibilities, as “Elevation” fits within a line of monster-filled, post-apocalyptic movies where there’s a unique twist to the invasion. For instance, in “A Quiet Place,” the threat was drawn to sound, while in “Bird Box,” it was crucial not to look at the danger. In “War of the Worlds,” the aliens struggled with our environment overall.
What’s the twist in “Elevation”? The alien invaders can’t thrive at altitudes above 8,000 feet. It would be beneficial for viewers to watch the preceding films that paved the way for “Elevation”, making them an ideal choice for a double feature evening.
10 Cloverfield Lane
In 2008, I found myself utterly captivated by the success of “Cloverfield,” but I must admit that the found footage style occasionally left me feeling a bit queasy. Despite its entertainment value, the film seemed to lack depth or profound themes. However, “10 Cloverfield Lane” certainly doesn’t share this flaw. This movie is brimming with thought-provoking ideas and substance.
Director Dan Trachtenberg, fresh off his first feature film, 10 Cloverfield Lane, demonstrated his skill under the guidance of J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot. Just like many other productions from this studio, it was known for its unexpected twists. Intriguingly, the movie’s existence itself was a secret until two months before its release when the first trailer was unveiled. Starring stellar performances by Mary Elizabeth Winstead, John Goodman, and John Gallagher Jr., this tightly knit, suspenseful film is considered one of the top sci-fi thrillers from the 2010s.

28 Days Later
In the 2000’s, Danny Boyle’s film “28 Days Later” was often considered one of the top horror movies, yet it was difficult to find and watch for a long period, except if you owned the DVD or Blu-ray. However, that situation has now improved! For those who haven’t had the chance, this is an excellent moment to experience this well-cast reimagining of the zombie genre in horror movies.
28 Days Later, under tight guidance from Boyle and featuring numerous suspenseful episodes, stands as a contemporary masterpiece much like Elevation. It chronicles a band of survivors trapped in a dire survival scenario, yearning for aid, similar to how earlier films do. The sequel, 28 Weeks Later, is equally impressive, so let’s keep our fingers crossed that the upcoming 28 Years Later will measure up to the lofty expectations established for it.

A Quiet Place
The movie, “A Quiet Place,” which was both hugely successful and highly praised, spawned a remarkable sequel, prequel, and even a video game. John Krasinski’s “A Quiet Place” demonstrated his exceptional directorial skills, as showcased on “The Office.” Similar to “A Quiet Place,” “Elevation” is an original intellectual property, and it unquestionably bears the impact of any project that has influenced it.
In the movie “A Quiet Place” and also in the film “Elevation”, there are creatures who have a unique limitation: they can’t see. Moreover, both stories revolve around the theme of safeguarding offspring. While “A Quiet Place” stands out as an exceptional film, “Elevation” does a commendable job of emulating its storyline.

Arcadian
Prior to Elevation treading a similar path as A Quiet Place, the movie Arcadian in 2024 was doing something comparable. Despite Nic Cage being back in the spotlight, Arcadian appears to be largely overlooked by movie enthusiasts.
predominantly, Arcadian focuses on the character of Paul, who is Cage’s counterpart, along with his two teenage sons, Joseph (portrayed by Jaeden Martell) and Thomas (Maxwell Jenkins from Joe Bell). The narrative unfolds around their secluded farmhouse, which is gradually encircled by a growing swarm of light-averse creatures, intent on eliminating whatever remnants of humanity they haven’t already eradicated. In essence, it shares a similar premise with A Quiet Place, except these monsters are repelled by light instead of attracted to sound. However, the film distinguishes itself tonally and some critics even praise its creature designs as superior.

The Thing
Among the finest horror remakes ever produced, and arguably the best, John Carpenter’s “The Thing” showcases exceptional skill in creating suspense and is a testament to the power of practical effects. This movie is incredibly engaging, inviting repeated viewings as viewers attempt to decipher which characters have been taken over by the alien entity. Despite multiple viewings, uncovering the assimilated characters can remain a mystery, a testament to the film’s cleverly crafted script.
Instead of being a typical post-apocalyptic monster movie like the others, The Thing is almost indistinguishable. In truth, it’s more of a near-apocalypse monster movie that has viewers questioning if the catastrophe was imminent. Fans of Elevation will appreciate the shared aspects of isolated characters and innovative problem-solving between these two films.
