A single word that can create a feeling of unease among viewers is “reshoots.” This term, whether fairly or not, has gained a connotation that suggests a large-scale production is in dire need of major changes. This perception hasn’t been improved by influential figures like James Gunn, head of DC Studios, stating that films like Superman typically don’t require extensive reshoots because their scripts have already been thoroughly refined beforehand. Marvel Studios and its productions have recently become particularly associated with reshoots, especially in relation to MCU movies released after Avengers: Endgame.
The term “reshoots” often gives viewers a sense of apprehension due to its association with major changes needed in big-budget films. This perception hasn’t been helped by key figures like James Gunn emphasizing that productions such as Superman typically don’t require extensive reshoots because their scripts have already been well-prepared ahead of time. Marvel Studios and its projects have recently become particularly known for requiring reshoots, especially in the case of MCU movies produced after Avengers: Endgame.)
Reshooting scenes for Marvel Cinematic Universe films doesn’t always lead to a better or worse outcome; the creative outcomes from this process can differ significantly from one movie to another. Interestingly, reshoots for five MCU movies have resulted in a final product that is vastly different from the original footage filmed during principal photography. These reshoots show just how influential reshoots can be, even on expensive blockbusters with careful planning and preparation.
Thor: The Dark World
Instead of merely one change of director during pre-production causing problems, Thor: The Dark World faced significant difficulties even during its reshoots. This entailed filming fresh scenes (some of these were scripted by Avengers director Joss Whedon), with a major emphasis on Loki (played by Tom Hiddleston). These changes included a new prologue opening sequence, showing Odin reprimanding his adopted son after his misdeeds in The Avengers. Alan Taylor, the director of Thor: The Dark World, openly admitted that these reshoots significantly altered his original creative plan for the movie, which initially had Loki dying in the film.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness
The film “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” underwent extensive reshoots, lasting over a month at the end of 2021 and even more reshoots just weeks before its release. These additional filming sessions were necessary due to COVID-19 restrictions on earlier scenes and to include additional cameos that fans would enjoy. The reshoots led to numerous alterations in previously recorded footage, with the character of Defender Strange becoming more antagonistic towards America Chavez in the movie’s opening sequence.
Thor: Love and Thunder
Reflecting on Taika Waititi’s initial MCU venture, “Thor: Ragnarok,” I must admit that there were a few adjustments made during production, particularly in Odin’s final scene with Thor and Loki. However, the reshoots for “Thor: Love and Thunder” transformed those minor tweaks into a complete overhaul! Scenes such as a heartwarming montage depicting the evolution of Jane Foster and Thor’s bond were skillfully incorporated during this stage. It appears that some scenes involving characters like Zeus, originally intended to have substantial roles, had their storylines entirely rewritten or even discarded during the reshoot process. Regrettably, returning MCU characters like The Grandmaster seemed to be casualties of these changes and were ultimately left out of the final cut. The evolution of “Thor: Love and Thunder” during its reshoots was indeed significant; however, it seems that this transformation may not have been entirely for the better.
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania
The storyline of “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” underwent significant alterations during reshoots, with a key subplot involving Lord Krylar (Bill Murray) and Jentorra (Katy O’Brian) being either changed or removed. However, one major last-minute adjustment during the final round of reshoots transformed the ending of “Quantumania”: In early 2023 (a few weeks before its release), reshoots were carried out that reportedly switched the original bleak conclusion emphasizing self-sacrifice, to a more optimistic one featuring the five main characters enjoying dinner together in San Diego. This significant twist in the plot came extremely close to the production stage, highlighting the artistic turmoil that has been consistently associated with “Quantumania” during its development process.
Captain America: Brave New World
The blockbuster movie, “Captain America: Brave New World,” experienced a significant push-back from its initial summer 2024 release date to February 2025. This delay allowed for an extensive round of reshoots in mid-2024. Some key changes were implemented during this period, such as the introduction of a new villain from the Serpent Society portrayed by Giancarlo Esposito and the removal of a supporting character played by Seth Rollins. Moreover, the film added additional action sequences over a span of 22 days during these reshoots. The extent of these additional shoots led Tim Blake Nelson, a cast member of “Brave New World,” to compare it to shooting the same movie twice!
Captain America’s latest adventure, “Brave New World,” is set to premiere in cinemas nationwide on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 2025. Meanwhile, you can catch up with the other Marvel Cinematic Universe films in this series on Disney+ streaming platform.
