In the upcoming spin-off titled “From The World of John Wick: Ballerina“, it appears that John Wick’s trend of working alongside past foes will persist. This film, set between the third and fourth installments of the “John Wick” series, follows Eve Macarro (played by Ana de Armas), a character who is secretly trained as an assassin within the Ruska Roma family while being presented as a ballerina. Her mission involves avenging her father’s death. Previously, it was announced that Keanu Reeves would appear in the movie as John Wick. The latest trailer for “Ballerina” unveils a surprising plot twist: the Baba Yaga is shown being sent to eliminate Eve before eventually teaming up with her later on.
The storyline of Ballerina shares the same timeframe as John Wick’s personal quest for vengeance against the High Table, leaving open the question of how and why he becomes entangled with Eve Macarro. This intriguing enigma will likely be unveiled when the movie is released. However, their potential alliance could stem from John’s ongoing struggle against the High Table within the John Wick series. Interestingly, there are four other instances in the John Wick saga where John finds himself compelled to join forces with an adversary for a common purpose or against a mutual enemy.
Sofia – John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum
In the film “John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum”, Baba Yaga initially forms an unusual partnership. He journeys to the Moroccan Continental to redeem a favor from its manager, Sofia, portrayed by Halle Berry. But Sofia is far from pleased to see him; she starts shooting at John as soon as he arrives, and her fury is evident when John uses his marker to demand her assistance. In the end, despite their initial hostility, Sofia aids John in tracking down the enigmatic High Table Elder. They both engage in a fierce battle against Sofia’s former boss, Berrada, during their escape from an intense explosion-filled confrontation.
It appears that Sofia and John have had a disagreement, although the details aren’t fully disclosed. However, it seems that Sofia’s resentment stems from being separated from her daughter, and John may be involved in the circumstances that led to her daughter being hidden away, which prevents Sofia from seeing her again. Later, John temporarily reconciles with Sofia, enabling him to locate the High Table Elder and fulfill his promise made to her. However, in Sofia’s view, their relationship remains strained, and they are still below par in her estimation.
The High Table Elder – John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum
Following John’s alliance with Sofia, he ventures into the scorching sands of Morocco in search of the Elder from the High Table (Saïd Taghmaoui), seeking to overturn his excommunication from the Continental. Upon hearing John’s appeal and his explanation that he now lives solely to honor his deceased wife Helen, the High Table Elder grants John his wish, but under the proviso that John must kill the manager of the New York Continental, Winston Scott (Ian McShane), a close friend of his. After carrying out this task, John is to spend the rest of his days as an assassin working directly for the High Table in New York City.
During a critical point in Baba Yaga’s most urgent distress, John appeals to the Elder of the High Table. With a bounty on his head, no sanctuary in the Continental, and no other partners available, John’s choice to comply with the High Table Elder’s conditions is purely survival-driven. Yet, his statement to the Elder, “I have served, I will serve,” doesn’t remain valid for long as he soon forges a new alliance.
Winston Scott – John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum & John Wick: Chapter 4
Upon my return to the New York Continental in “Parabellum”, the always composed Winston successfully convinces me to renounce my pact with the Elder of the High Table. His reasoning is that I had once broken free from their control and would only find myself forever bound by obeying their commands if I stayed loyal. With the assistance of the Continental’s concierge, Charon (Lance Reddick), I fend off an attack from the High Table after the New York Continental is de-consecrated. However, “Parabellum” concludes with a surprise. In negotiations with the High Table and retaining my position at the Continental, Winston finds himself confronted with the question of what penalties I would face for my insubordination. In an instant, he decides that “he must die,” firing shots at me until I plummet from the top of the Continental to the street below.
In the film John Wick: Chapter 4, although Winston has betrayed him, John appears to hold no grudge against him. This could be because Winston was in a difficult situation under the watchful eye of the High Table Adjudicator (played by Asia Kate Dillon). Following the death of Charon at the hands of Marquis Vincent Bisset de Gramont (Bill Skarsgård), John and Winston decide to work together to seek revenge. This alliance serves a dual purpose, as it aligns with two other significant partnerships in John’s past, where he teams up with adversaries.
The Ruska Roma – John Wick: Chapter 4
According to Winston’s suggestion, a High Table duel is the best way for both characters to avenge Charon’s death and free themselves from the High Table forever. Consequently, John travels to Germany to seek help from his estranged family, the Ruska Roma, who had previously exiled him. Notably, Katia Jovonovich, John’s bitter adoptive sister, now leads the Ruska Roma after their father was killed by Killan Harkan at the behest of the Marquis de Gramont. Recognizing that John can’t challenge a High Table duel unless he belongs to a High Table family, Katia agrees to reinstate John into the Ruska Roma on the condition that he eliminates Killan Harkan.
In the end, John completes his task and is welcomed back into the Ruska Roma community. This union with the Ruska Roma is unique compared to John’s past collaborations, as the Baba Yaga takes on the majority of the work to defeat Killa Harkan. Once John meets Katia’s demands, she and the Ruska Roma keep their word by accepting John back into the family and facilitating a High Table duel with the Marquis de Gramont.
Caine – John Wick: Chapter 4
In “John Wick: Chapter 4”, while John Wick gears up for a confrontation against the High Table, his former associate and ex-assassin Caine (Donnie Yen) is forced by the Marquis de Gramont into targeting the Baba Yaga. The safety of Caine’s daughter hangs in the balance, causing him to engage John in numerous battles throughout the movie. Eventually, John Wick and Winston manage to arrange a High Table duel. However, the cunning Marquis deceives them by choosing Caine as his substitute for the duel. To make matters worse, the Marquis endangers both John and Winston by ordering all assassins in Paris to obstruct John’s path, aiming to prevent him from reaching the duel on time.
Ultimately, it was Caine who assisted John in overcoming his final horde of adversaries on the Rue Foyatier staircase. As they fought together against the Baba Yaga’s forces, the profound bond between them, once friends but now reluctant enemies, was as radiant as the sunrise that welcomed them. Despite drawing their guns against each other, John and Caine emerged victorious. In a shocking turn of events, John dealt the fatal blow to the Marquis, while Caine’s daughter was rescued.
In spite of John seemingly dying during the duel, speculations among fans persist that either Caine or Winston (or possibly both) assisted John in staging his own death. With a Caine spin-off and John Wick 5 under development, there’s a strong possibility that John and Caine’s collaboration continued even through their High Table duel, paving the way for these formidable warriors to join forces again in the future.
From The World of John Wick: Ballerina debuts in theaters on June 6th.
