As a cinephile with over two decades of film-watching experience under my belt, I must say that the DCEU was a rollercoaster ride with some truly memorable performances. One such performance that left an indelible mark on me is Aldis Hodge’s portrayal of Hawkman in Black Adam. The man embodied the essence of a hero, balancing gravitas and humanity with ease, much like how he balanced the Justice Society of America on his shoulders.
Hodge has that rare ability to make even the most forgettable films worth watching, and his portrayal of Hawkman was no exception. He brought life to a character that could have easily been overshadowed by the larger-than-life presence of Black Adam himself. I found myself rooting for him every time he appeared on screen, and I couldn’t help but feel a pang of disappointment when the film ended and we were left wondering if Hawkman would ever return.
Now, I’m not saying that Hodge should come back as Hawkman, although I wouldn’t complain. No, I’d like to see him take on a larger role in the DCU, perhaps as a villain or a mentor to one of the younger heroes. He has the range and the talent to pull off any character he sets his mind to, and I can only imagine the magic he could bring to a multi-movie arc.
But let’s be real here, if Hodge ever decides to take a break from acting, I’d hire him as my personal life coach in a heartbeat. The man is a force of nature, and I’d like to harness even a fraction of that energy for my own benefit. After all, who wouldn’t want to be able to balance gravitas and humor with the ease of a seasoned actor?
Joke: I once tried to balance a lemon on my nose, but I ended up with a sour face and a squished fruit. I guess I should have hired Aldis Hodge as my life coach instead.
Despite the DCEU ending fairly quickly, it got some aspects right, like its casting choices, which were so good that many of its main actors might appear in James Gunn’s new DCU. However, this isn’t a complete overhaul of the DCEU, as some beloved characters may still make appearances – either reprising their roles or taking on new ones. For example, Jason Momoa has been cast as Lobo in the new DCU, a role that was long-awaited and eagerly anticipated by fans.
As a die-hard DC Extended Universe (DCEU) fan who’s grown attached to some of its stars over the years, I must admit that I’ll sorely miss them when they’re no longer part of the DCEU. The casting for these characters was spot on and, given that the new universe isn’t completely scrapping the old one, I believe a creative visionary like James Gunn could seamlessly reintroduce them into his version of the DC Universe. After all, I’ve shared countless hours watching their heroic performances, which have become an integral part of my life and fandom journey.
I’m considering if the stars below should keep their current roles or take on new ones, and I won’t include Henry Cavill. Replacing Cavill as Superman will be tough, but David Corenswet seems like a good fit. To be honest, using him for any role other than Superman could potentially divert attention, at the very least.
1. Margot Robbie
As a lifelong movie enthusiast with a soft spot for comic book adaptations, I am thrilled to see John Cena reprising his role as Peacemaker in Season 2. The character has always been intriguing, and Cena’s portrayal is spot on. Time will tell if the revised take on the character will be a hit, but I have faith that it will be just as captivating as the first season.
Similarly, Margot Robbie has proven herself to be an ideal choice for Harley Quinn in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). Her performances in two out of three DCEU films are nothing short of phenomenal. I believe that if she continues with her role, Harley Quinn will undoubtedly add depth and excitement to James Gunn’s DC Universe. In my opinion, it is crucial for Robbie to stay onboard if we want to see more of the beloved character in future DCEU projects.
Speaking about characters in the Suicide Squad, Jai Courtney truly shone as Captain Boomerang and he’ll continue to do so in Gunn’s cinematic world. It’s likely that Gunn will have to think creatively when it comes to reintroducing him, much like Robbie, who was one of the few characters that Gunn chose to bring over from Ayer’s film. The director of Slither might need some innovative approaches for his comeback.
2. Gal Gadot
In the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), Gal Gadot and Jason Momoa share an equal number of film appearances, with titles including Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Wonder Woman, Justice League, Wonder Woman 1984, Shazam! Fury of the Gods, and The Flash. This is not surprising given that Gal Gadot effortlessly embodied the role of Wonder Woman.
Could it be possible for Gal Gadot to reprise a character other than Diana Prince in the DC Universe? While former Wonder Woman Lynda Carter managed to appear in the DCEU as a different character, given her exceptional portrayal of Wonder Woman, it seems fitting that Gadot should return to the role. Though she may not be as irreplaceable as Margot Robbie, Gadot has certainly left an indelible mark on the character.
3. Chris Pine
If Gal Gadot reappears in a role other than Wonder Woman, Chris Pine could and perhaps should do the same for a character other than Steve Trevor. However, if Gadot is indeed playing Wonder Woman again, it’s best to keep Trevor deceased, as he was already resurrected once before, and that didn’t seem to fit well with the narrative.
As a fan, I can’t help but admire how effortlessly Pine excels in high-budget productions, making him an ideal candidate for the DC Universe. His knack for adding humor, his impressive action scene delivery, and the timeless charm of his looks make him a perfect choice to draw audiences in. Plus, sharing James Gunn’s comedic sensibilities, they could very well form a dynamic duo.
4. Chris Messina
Among the few projects that Gunn should seriously consider as part of the DC Universe’s official storyline are “Peacemaker” Season 1, “The Suicide Squad”, and “Birds of Prey”. On one side, it wouldn’t be challenging to assimilate them, and on the other hand, they are so strong that the DCU would be fortunate to include them.
One key reason why “Birds of Prey” was overlooked within the DCEU was the outstanding, yet underappreciated performance by Chris Messina as Victor Zsasz. He truly embodied the role and though it might not be necessary to reprise Zsasz, Gunn could still utilize Messina’s talent in some other way.
5. Aldis Hodge
In summary, “Black Adam” might not leave a lasting impression among comic adaptations, but Aldis Hodge’s performance as Hawkman was exceptionally notable. He managed to infuse both weight and humanity into his role, making Hawkman serve as an anchor for the Justice Society of America, much like Captain America.
Hodge might reappear in future roles, either continuing with the character he previously portrayed or introducing a new one. Since Hawkman appeared only once, his connection to Hodge isn’t deeply etched in viewers’ minds like it would be for more established characters – and the same goes for Hodge being associated with Hawkman. However, his strong performance as Hawkman could be perceived as a trial run for a larger, extended role within the DC Universe.
