Kathleen Kennedy assumed leadership at Lucasfilm on June 1, 2012, about half a year prior to Disney’s announcement of their intended acquisition of Lucasfilm and the subsequent shift in Star Wars media production. This means that Kennedy served as the head of Lucasfilm for an extended period of 13 years, during which she was instrumental in creating some of the most significant films ever made (such as Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Star Wars: The Last Jedi), as well as those that faced critical and commercial disappointments (Solo: A Star Wars Story and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny). By the end of 2025, it is rumored that Kennedy may choose to retire after a long career in the entertainment industry.
In the aftermath of Kennedy’s departure, everyone is eagerly awaiting who Disney will select as his successor at Lucasfilm. Finding a suitable replacement for this position isn’t straightforward, and not all apparent frontrunners may be ideal for the job. For example, popular figures like Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau, who are cherished by Star Wars fans, might lack the extensive film production experience that Kennedy possessed. Managing a colossal enterprise such as Lucasfilm would require someone with deep roots in show business, not just familiarity with holidays like Life Day or characters like Mara Jade. Five candidates, however, have emerged as promising possibilities to assume control of Lucasfilm following Kennedy’s tenure.
Carrie Beck
Established in 2013, the Lucasfilm Story Group was tasked with developing a unified narrative structure for the Star Wars universe. One of its founding members, who held the title Director, Creative Content Strategy for the group in 2013, is Carrie Beck. Over the years, she has risen through the ranks at Lucasfilm and currently serves as Vice President of Animation and Live-Action Development, as well as an executive producer on the 2023 Disney+ series “Star Wars: Ahsoka.” With her extensive knowledge of all things Star Wars, Beck has expanded her responsibilities significantly. Given her long tenure at Lucasfilm, Beck appears to be a strong candidate for taking over Kennedy’s position if Disney executives are searching for a suitable replacement.
Pippa Anderson
A potential new leader for Lucasfilm is Pippa Anderson, who currently holds the position of Senior Vice President, Post Production at the company. Since her return in 2013, she has been instrumental in overseeing the post-production process for all Star Wars projects, including films and television series, starting from ‘The Force Awakens’. Given her long tenure with Lucasfilm and the numerous productions she’s managed, it seems fitting that she might step into the role of head of Lucasfilm and lead Star Wars projects throughout their entire production process.
Emma Watts
In the past decade, the merger of significant American film studios has led to a pool of skilled executives who were let go but are now seeking high-profile job opportunities. One such figure is Emma Watts, who spent approximately 23 years in key roles at 20th Century Fox, including President of Production since 2007. She parted ways with the company following its merger with Disney in 2020. The woman responsible for overseeing blockbuster franchises such as Avatar and Deadpool at Fox is currently a freelance producer. Given her potential, she could be an excellent candidate to replace Kennedy. After all, Watts excels at managing talent and has extensive experience handling expensive movie franchises, qualities that are not easy to find elsewhere.
Jeff Small
George Lucas initially selected a close associate of Steven Spielberg as his successor at Lucasfilm’s helm. Given this, it seems fitting to consider a similar path, particularly with someone who has an impressive background in managing film studios. Jeff Small, current CEO of Amblin Partners and former COO of Revolution Studios, could be a strong contender for the position. Under his leadership at Amblin Entertainment’s modern iteration, Small has overseen a variety of projects, from smaller ones like “The Fabelmans” to larger ones such as “Twister.” Moreover, he has also served as CEO during Amblin Partners’ pursuit of retro films like “The House With a Clock in its Walls,” which echo earlier periods of genre cinema. These qualities make him an excellent candidate for overseeing the Lucasfilm empire.
Nicole Brown
For nearly two years, Nicole Brown has made significant strides as the leader of TriStar Pictures at Sony Pictures Entertainment. Notably, she’s positioned this studio as a haven for films that other studios are hesitant to take risks on, such as critically acclaimed productions like “The Woman King” and “One of Them Days”. Upcoming projects include adult dramas like “A Big Bold Beautiful Journey” and “Eleanor the Great”, slated for the big screen.
Recently, there has been intense scrutiny over the Star Wars franchise for allegedly playing it too safe. By bringing on Brown, Lucasfilm could usher in a new era of creativity that mirrors Brown’s successful tenure at TriStar Pictures.
